You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword. This is going to be the “root” of all your search engine optimization success, so we are going to be tackling keywords here before we get into creating content.

First, WHAT is a KEYWORD?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

Ultimately, the goal of your keyword research is to find keywords that you can get rankings in Google, Yahoo, and Bing with, all while attracting a relevant audience. You will be using the keywords that you find in this lesson to build content around. This will lead you to search engine rankings and traffic to your website!

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each page you create will be targeting a keyword...

That is correct. Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page/post that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how). This means that every page or post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 pages targeted 100 keywords = 100 potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines are around because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson and I suggest you watch this if you want to get a wonderful overview of what keywords are and how to apply them to your business.

DISCUSS THIS VIDEO HERE: Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Success

Task 1: Create a FREE Jaaxy Account (gives you 30 awesome searches)

To complete this lesson you must Register for a FREE Jaaxy Account!

Jaaxy.com is the most powerful keyword tool on the market and delivers accurate, real time data that is going to help you come up with SEO ready keywords. Jaaxy is a company that Carson and I own and founded and was built to fill the many gaps of every other keyword tool out there.

Going forward, Jaaxy is going to provide you with sophisticated keyword and research data (and will save you a TON of time). We offer 30 searches for free when you register which will get you up and running with your Niche & Keyword research.

Register for your free Jaaxy.com account here:

http://www.jaaxy.com/join

Again, this gives you access the trial plan, no credit cards required. I know you will love Jaaxy!

Task 2: Perform 10 different searches using Jaaxy.com

Your next task is going to be performing 10 full searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy.com Keyword tool. Jaaxy is the worlds BEST keyword research platform and there is a Free Trial account available that you need to sign-up for to complete this task.

My suggestion is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "how to lose belly fat", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • belly fat
  • how to lose belly fat
  • belly fat weight loss
  • stomach fat
  • remove belly fat
  • etc

Then refine your searches. As you see keywords, check the QSR (Quoted Search Result). If it is under 300 results (the lower the better), add to your "good" keyword list (which will be used towards your next task). Ideally you want to aim for keywords with at least 50 monthly searches.

Task 3: : Research and find at least 5 keywords related to your niche

Your final task today is to find 5 keywords that meet the following criteria.

(1) More than 50 monthly searches (sometimes ANY traffic is OK)
(2) Less than 200 QSR. (the lower the less competition).
(3) Keyword must make sense.

Here is an example search using Jaaxy:

As you can see, most of these keywords meet the traffic test (over 50 monthly searches). The last check is to click the "Get QSR" to see what the competition is. If you are on the Jaaxy trial, you will simply click "Get QSR" until I find a keyword with under 200 competition.

The keyword must make grammatical sense. If it doesn't and you want to use that keyword, do another search on the keyword that makes sense as the data will differ slightly. An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords.

WA PREMIUM INCLUDES: 1,000 Hand Picked Keywords and Unlimited Searches Using the WA Keyword Tool!

We have a Keyword Tool that you get unlimited access to as a Premium member here at Wealthy Affiliate. This is a different tool than Jaaxy but it will give you UNLIMITED keyword searches to reveal keywords for your niche! Included when you upgrade to Premium.

Tasks 0/4 completed
2. Sign-up to Jaaxy.com for Free
3. Perform 10 searches using Jaaxy
4. Find 3 Keywords that meet the keyword criteria (related to niche, 50 monthly, less than 300 competition)

I have a question. I saw Kyle disable Robot meta noindex, nofollow, noodp, noydir under privacy page settings for SEO plugin. I only see noindex and nofollow. I don't have the option for noodp and noydir. It did not look like he was using pro SEO plugin. Am I missing something?

I usually turn this on. It isn't a requirement, so that is totally up to you. The impact that "meta" keywords will have on your business is very nominal, whereas the keywords that you have within your actual content that you are creating will be the focus moving forward.

Hello McVenom,

You can still create your 2 free websites on SiteRubix and monetize them. For instance you can sign up for several affiliates to market their products according to your niche selections.

I am currently signed up for Amazon Associates--their affiliate program and will be promoting my niche products for others to purchase on Amazon. Later I will sign up for other affiliates: Ebay, Best Buy, Walmart, etc.

I am into my second week at WA and have ranked #1 and page 1 on google for my first website.

Thank you Rich ill get on to it. Just another question as you've been so helpful. Am i right in saying that keywords are not just going to be in title of the website when it comes up on google search but will it also pick it up with the content on the website does that make sense ?
Reply
@RICH. Premium
You try to use a single, relevant but different keyword for every page and post you create for your site. You put it in the title and first paragraph and write naturally around it. For example, one of your keywords for an orchid site might be "prune orchids", so for one post the title might be "How to prune orchids" and the first para might contain, "The best way to prune orchids is...".

I recommend you leave the SEO title and description fields blank.

Here's an example of the difference http://d.pr/i/ay7Y

I've searched for "afternoon tea at the ritz". The first result shows Google deciding what to show from the post and emboldening my search term. The second one has a forced description so it doesn't show my search term.

I believe people are more likely to click on a result that shows their search term than one that doesn't.

It also saves time and effort crafting "perfect" descriptions, especially as Google seems to be ranking higher content that doesn't have such descriptions!

Heyo people, I have a little question here.

I'm on the 'About Me' page, sitting thinking up content to put there and one thought has occurred to me that I want to ask about in detail about before I go on.

Should I mention to people all the motivations for my creating this website? I mean, I'm not a bad guy, but I'm not a saint, my website is going to have content to help people out... but I'm doing it cause I'm going to make money from it

It seems like a delicate topic to broach, in your experience, do people appreciate your honesty when you say. 'I created this website to help get me money!' Do they prefer to know your full motivations so they can trust you? Or does hearing that make them think less of you and avoid you?
Reply
@RICH. Premium
I don't think it's necessary. I don't see "we built this site to make money" on Amazon, Walmart, eBay, etc. :)
Reply
NYAKOOJO1 Premium
Hey Lee there is no problem with that because you are being realistic but under marketing, many times the customers buy the uses or value of the product or service. They don't normally look at the product but what it's going to help or satisfy him. So it's good to emphasize the value of the product or service to the customer on your site than just to make money. Money comes after satisfying the need.

Hey Lee, what is your niche? Do some research and look at a few competitor sites in your niche and their About Us pages. That will give you some inspiration ;)

Generally you should position yourself as the expert on this page. You have the answers your readers are looking for.

Reply
@RICH. Premium
I always recommend you work in a niche you are truly passionate about, there's nothing more dreary than writing content year-after-year about a topic that bores you to tears! That said, if you're truly stuck, do Affiliate Bootcamp, but it is highly competitive, make sure you have an angle and a target audience, ie. second income stream for veterans, etc. :)

Maureen, - I've seen a lot of people be successful with the Bootcamp. And I believe the lessons there apply also to any niche, so it's all good stuff.
But I'd have a think about what you care about in life? What matters to you Maureen? What interests you? Hobbies? Skills you have? Is there something in particular that you tend to search for on the web? What do you find inspiring? Anything you ever helped anyone with in the past, that you really enjoyed doing? etc. Perhaps whilst you are doing Bootcamp the idea will suddenly come. All the best.

Very interesting and informative video. The idea of choosing a niche was somewhat daunting before this section as I always understood a niche to be something that people wanted, but would struggle to find (ie, a "niche" in the market)

Now I know it can be literally ANYTHING, it doesn't seem quite so difficult to come up with a niche.

I know it is advised to find something you're passionate about but does this mean it has to be something you're vastly knowledgeable about as well?

Just a thought, but for those struggling with the idea of finding a niche - think about the last time you walked in a shopping center or mall.

Each store is a different niche. While some big box stores will have hundreds of niches, the smaller boutique stores tend to cater to a specific interest.

Your website will be a version of a store. The information you write about, the affiliate links you add, all combine to support the topic of the niche.

Hopefully this will help you clarify what you are looking for and how to approach it as you develop your sites.

Exactly each store is actually many different niches! This is a great idea and we are all involved in many different niches with our shopping habits alone. Then take our passions and interests into consideration and we all have lots of ideas.

I'm just more concerned about the monthly billing and confused on it. So do we have to pay the $359 along with the $49 per month even though we haven't made a sale? What if I don't have the money for it? Will I get kicked out of the Wealthy Affiliate if I don't?
Reply
cramervod Premium
The monthly membership is $49. The $359 is for a yearly membership. You will have a grace period if you are unable to keep up with the monthly payments, in which time you can get your website(s) hosting elsewhere or make that months payment.
Reply
Elizstarr74 Premium
Also, that 359 a year is prorated, as the days, weeks and months,go by, since you became premium, when you're paying the $49 a month the amount of 359 comes down. So, by 6 months that will be half the amount of 359.
Reply
ericcantu Premium
lol, don't worry. The monthly premium membership is $49/month. Your first month is discounted heavily at $19, so for $19 you'll basically get a full test drive of all that the premium membership offers you for an entire month. If you love it, perfect. If not, you're free to leave, but trust me, most don't because this training is the best I've found online and for $19, that's hard to beat.

The yearly membership which is the best value is a one time $359. It averages out to $29/month instead of the $49, so you're basically getting around half off. You pay that once, and you're done with any payments for a full year.

So jump in and take full advantage of your first month. See if this is for you. You won't get a better opportunity to try out training like this for this cheap :) Enjoy!

those 3 keywords i need to acquire, what do they need to be about. what i actually mean, for example, my chosen niche is about best mouses for gaming/gamers, this niche it self, got more objects in it, i mean products like Razor for example, so those keywords should be about the niche overall (best mouses for gaming)? or about anything that belongs to the niche (best Razor/Logitech mouses as example)?

Thanks Kyle, you're always providing the information I need to help me succeed. One of the things I learned today, by using key word searches, is that my interests aren't necessarily the highest priority of others. So I changed things around a bit, by changing key words just a little (just using a Google search to judge and then the WA keyword tool), Google results went from 6.6mm to 21.6mm in a matter of minutes. As I am still in the process of getting my web page up and running, this is invaluable information!

I think that's a fantastic niche. There are a lot of people needing support with that lately. I'm not aware of many products, perhaps books on the subject and psychology books, maybe affiliates with reliable hormone therapy in the future. There was a man featured on msn just the other week, who had been in a beautiful female body and his transition was amazing, because he is now in a hot male body. Interviewing other transgender people would certainly provide for lots of content. As would those FAQs and "things transgender people are tired of hearing" kind of posts. Here's to your success!

Just get the traffic and everything else will follow, I just started by adding courses that I am promoting because I had them already in my mind and I love the niche.
The rest is to get traffic, but I am determined to add a blog post or content at least once out of two days.

I am going to be promoting items related to medical areas. Is there any law experts here as I do not want to give advice on medical problems, just promote items which are made to help reduce the symptoms to the medical problem(s)I can promote items for. I dont want to get into any legal problems Thx much

You will need to find a Medical Disclaimer, and make sure you're not claiming to be any kind of medical professional. Tell people to seek a medical doctor's advice before taking any kind of supplement or vitamin/mineral. And that your's is just an opinion and isn't meant to be viewed as anything but for informational purposes. Something along those lines, I was researching the disclaimer a bit and that is what I found...

Thx...I agree totally Even though I have the license, I do not want to give medical advice, just route people in the right direction to get the products/info the want for their or their loved ones condition..thx all

Thinking to look at wedding planning as the niche. So the group of people I am looking at would be the couple who is starting to plan for their wedding. Also looking at ideas to incorporate honeymoon under this heading as well.

My concern is would it be too broad for a niche? Appreciate your feedback to help me narrow down this. Thank you so much!

Hello shyan38,

I think your niche is perfect. It will give you enough room to include everything that concerns wedding planning...
Good luck and go for it

Hi there. I did a bit of research and I have found a couple of good suggestions with domain names that are available too.

budget wedding ideas Or creative wedding ideas

budgetweddingideas(.net) and creativeweddingideas(.net) are both available!

Both of these wedding themed phrases get around 500 searches per month alone. The competition level is pretty good too. You could incorporate anything that you like into "Creative Wedding Ideas".

It's really a question of what you feel comfortable with. Does this niche get you excited to get started? Do you think that you could create content for the site on a regular basis?

I love planning!

Thank you for your feedback!

Every website starts naked. It's your job to create how it looks and what it on it. Plugins help make things easier and should be used only for necessary changes. But the good news is everything important for your site is in the training, any optional thing you will want to search for either in google or in the WA search up top.

You will have many questions along the way so take advantage of the threads to ask questions, also use live chat that's why it's there.

did you go through the courses? The 10 level course teaches you about adding photos, where to find them, adding content that you should write yourself from research that you will have to do on whatever niche you have chosen.
Reply
DeRaj Premium
Keep on following courses. In upcoming lessons you will learn everything to put pictures, description and so on within your website. And that is also very easily if you take lessons step by step.
So, I suggest you to keep on taking Wealthy Affiliate lessons by clicking "Get Started Here/Certification" green bar on the left hand side menu of Wealthy Affiliate. At the end of those lessons, there are some tasks which you need to complete. Move step by step from lesson 1 without skipping any lessons or tasks. I repeat, without skipping any lessons or tasks. If you move in that way, soon you will understand the system of Wealthy Affiliate and even will start to build your online business.
Best of Luck!

My passion & hobby is studying and developing social skills. I would like to help others with this.

I'm sure their are people searching "how to make more friends, how to be more popular, how to improve my social skills"

Is this a good niche.

Also I was considering the social skills website as a long term project where I will have to develop my own services & products.

But having a second "strictly affiliate" site, where I'm selling stuff off of Amazon.

The first site would be my dream, the second one would br a quick way to get some revenue coming in?

What do you guys think?

I think it is a good niche, many people are looking for help with their social media accounts, followers, likes, etc., and some pay companies a lot of money for these services. You have a good niche, large audience, and a need for your services. Stick with it and you will do well! I'm excited to see what you create!

Well my idea is more along the lines of improving your social life, as opposed to social media.

But thanks for the encouragement!

Well developing social skills is a bit of broad topic. Perhaps a topic on how to improve confidence? This I would go for, because it actually covers self esteem and improving social skills.
Reply
Thanks, I kind of thought about that, but I have trouble letting go of the broad topic, because I'm passionate about getting people these wholistic results, just covering it all.

So do you think for marketing purposes, it should be some very specific thing, and once they are in the door, it turns into a more wholistic thing?

For example I view it as higher purpose vs lower purpose. Higher purpose is like, change the world, help people, teach others. Lower purpose would be make money, have sex, become popular, etc.

So what I've heard people do is market these lower purpose desires, because it connects with the masses, but behind closed doors it leads to higher purpose development?

What do you think about that as a marketing approach?

I used WA's privacy policy but I have noticed some spelling and grammatical mistakes.
Paragraph 2: 'that' needs to be added after 'information'
Paragraph 3: remove 's' on includes, and gather should include a 's'
Paragraph 7: technology 'in' the (correction) and 'sent' instead of 'send'
I hope this helps. Maybe the administration of WA will correct this or let us know if I misinterpreted the wording.

Third question: I accidentally built my web page on Siterubix so I moved it to the domain I had bought. Now it is telling me to not delete the old domain on Siterubix as it is transferring, etc. etc. But I moved it as soon as I had built in, within minutes, so is it really going to matter if it is deleted. This happened three days ago and I am scared to remove the old site.

sorry Nicole, I don't know the answer to that exactly but it seems to me if the siterubix got transfered to your new domain, then it really does not matter if your delete it or not. Your new domain is what counts. maybe someone will jump in and answer with more authority on this question.

I'm unable to login to my first site. It's a site I own and redirected from GoDaddy. This is what Mozilla Firefox supplied when they refused access to the site:
The certificate is only valid for siterubix.com The certificate expired on September 11, 2016 at 12:15 PM. The current time is August 11, 2017 at 11:17 AM. Error code: SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN

Wait is the site your using a .com or a site rubix site? The site rubix domains don't have SSL
Reply

Thanks Cramer, It is a .com from GoDaddy The website video Kyle made says that the DNS servers need to be changed in order for the WA content to be found. Doing that resulted in being denied access by Firefox.
I might be able to allow an exception but I don't know if that tweaks the redirection?
Reply

I can't find any useful answers to this. the simplest thing would be to renew the SSL on the site before the redirect.

hi joejr49, login to your website, step 1- go to all pages. at the top where you type your title for that page delete it and type it in again. after you typed it in hit the update button on the right side of the page.that should do it.If that doesn't work you have to go to your menu page and see if you put it in your menu with is under the word appearance. after that repeat step 1.That should do it. this is easier to do. then hit the refresh button and view. and you should be good to go.<imporant> after you published, update or type anything on a page make sure you hit the refresh button that way everything you put on your pages will go through. hope that helps.

Hello Build your now,
If you are at level 8 that is a good thing and you are not far from seeing your completed site. I had to watch it a couple of times. I find it easiest when i have the training video on and have in another tab my site open as well that way the second I realize what it is that needs to happen ? I switch over to my page and do as instructed . I would take another listen to the video.Maybe you missed something ? On privacy page you can just highlight with you cursor and just copy and paste to your site page then just place your site name in the spot that says " your site name here .com . The about me page you will have to write about your self.

i hope toy have found this helpful .

In Lesson # 8 tutorial video on creation of first three pages (About ME, Privacy Policy and Relevant Info To Your Site/Theme/niche) of your website, I got lost from that point onward. It was not very clear in my effort to replicate the directions of the instructor on my site. I need to fully understand this to complete Lesson # 8 in order to proceed to Lesson # 9. Some assistance is needed here.

Eugene Douglas had a good idea just above in this feed. Your first page, or home page and theme/niche is usually the first page your readers or visitors will see. Here you want to give them a bit of information about what your site is about and what they can expect to see. You can make this as fun as you like. Putting a bit of 'You' and your personality there is always good too. Think of it as when someone comes to your door and you open it up and invite them in. The first they see is what will create a lasting impression or not.
Hope this adds to Douglas' helpful tips.

Although the ideas for a niche are many, the potential of making money off promoting and selling this program seems that it would not only be enjoyable, but viable. How viable is it? Can anybody tell me....what is the commission structure as I'm trying to decide. What is the potential?

I wish it was that easy, but no, you will have to do a lot of reading and watching the videos. Then you will need to build out your website (lots of writing too), and it will take months to get enough visitors/traffic to your site. Just like a house takes time to build, a website takes a lot of thought, time and effort as well. Wishing you success.

When you have already set up your All in One SEO can you change your title/niche under the customize button if you are still not satisfied its wording?. I see there are editing icons on the website when I click Customize. In other words do these changes mean a total change of the domain? Is this the procedure if you want to change your domain name/niche? Help please.

What is the URL you're using and why change it?
Because you can't change a URL without starting over, and if you have paid for the domain it is even more of a hit.
If you just want to call your business something else you can edit the site title and the home title in All In One.

During my search in JAAXY I have discovered that my domain name/URL? which also reflects my niche and the title of my website can be worded in such a way that it attracts huge traffic at a minimal competition than the current one which attracts less than 10 traffic though also very very low competition. The video training demo made me understand that the domain name should reflect the niche/title, but according to you now the title/niche is editable without affecting the domain name and without affecting the performance of the whole thing in the search engines, is that O.K Cramervod? of course to others also who can share with me here.

I'm in the process of choosing a niche. What am I going to be doing within that niche? I'm assuming I will be writing blogs so how much of an expert do I need to be in that field? If I choose say baby clothing, narrowing it down of course, am I simply promoting or is it more specified?

Hello SBecca55,

You don't need to be an expert. I am sure if you are passionate about it ... you will have something to say about your niche.
Why don't you look at others' websites? to see what is it done? To have a better idea of what do you want to do? promoting or specifying ?

Good luck,

Thank you so much for your help. I'm so confused. Stupid question...how do I look at others' websites?
Reply

SBecca55, some members have their websites and other accounts accessible on their Profile pages in the lower right hand corner. If you 'follow', that person, you can look at their Profile page. However, not everyone posts their accounts and websites on their Profile, I do however, you can take a look if you like. I have just 'followed' you and you can 'follow' me back. I was very confused at first too. I was lucky enough to be temporarily unemployed last winter and spring so I could spend lots of time here learning. When you feel too frustrated, just walk away and do something else for awhile. Sometimes Brains need a rest too :)

I'm using Jaaxy right now to do keyword searches and many of my searches don't have anything for QSR. Some of the results will have over 50 monthly searches and no QSR. My niche is needle craft kits and I've done 15 searches using needle craft, craft kits, sewing, and more. When the keywords pop up, there is nothing listed under QSR. Should having no QSR listed mean I'm being too specific with my keywords?
Reply

No that means there is NO competing websites for that keyword!! Use it if it has some traffic!!
