NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Hello everyone. I just joined the WA community today and have just completed the 1st Lesson. Just wanted to jump in and say I would be interested in reading/listening to "Self-help" E-books and reviewing/summarizing them. That way I am enjoying and developing mentally and sharing summaries/highlights of books on my website. Is this specific enough as a niche? Cheese and Tx

Hi

In the first instance, I'd ask myself

Am I passionate and genuinely interested in my chosen niche, as I I'd be expected to write lots of content, it would motivate me to update blog with succinct original content worthy my visitors week in week out.

Would I be writing about it in a years time or two or more

Who would be my target audience, who would benefit most from what I have to offer.

The question is WHO would be your target audience vs Not what you are selling to an audience.

You need aim for ONE focused niche with a specific group of people, I'd go with what's best resonates with me.

The recommendation is to focus on ONE site starting out as it takes lots of effort and work get it going, however once you know what you are doing, then the learning curve would be less steeper to scale up.

That's a great niche to be in however broad you may want to narrow it down to a subcategory starting out, otherwise you will find it very hard to get noticed by the search engines and to compete with big authority sites. Target audience is important too, who would you be writing to, once you are able to identify them, you are closer to finding a focused niche.

Once a site starts gaining traction, traffic and authority you can then scale to cover another subcategory.

See example blog post below A niche subject is something you are passionate and genuinely interested in could be a hobby or an interest, and know so well you can write plenty original content about.

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

You may consult with https://answersocrates.com/ for further research into finding a subcategory starting out. You can search what real people are asking as in Questions, Prepositions, Comparisons, in the past, letters and query. It is also great if someone wants to write a thorough research based article.

For example if you are in self-help

You may like review below resource for more ideas

"Personal development isn’t a niche. It’s an industry. You’d want to get more specific with what audience you’re helping and what goal within the personal development niche you’re helping with. Time management? Sales training? Law of attraction? Habit formation? Making vision boards?

The problem is some people try to do it all then it becomes hard to sell anything because you don’t have enough people who have the same interests."

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?

Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience. Your niche research which you'd fine in site content > templates:-

Questions People are Asking
How to Solutions
Resources Within the Niche
Products You Can Promote/Review
Affiliate Programs
Products
Top Authority Sites/Competitors
Low Competition Keywords
Popular Magazines / Papers / Periodicals
Advertisement Ideas / Headline Ideas

Essentially you are writing more informational posts so that you do not sound so salesy to Google and if there’s a solution, a detailed analysis review post for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.

Who is it that you want to help with "self help". We see that you wish to help your audience with books.

"self help" is a broad topic so unless you start with a sub category your audience will be disappointed because they are looking for a lot of detail on a specific "help". Start with a narrower focus.
Reply
jghwebbrand Premium
Here are some niche tips you can apply to your "self help" idea.

A niche is something you feel super excited to write about, a skill you have attained, something that resonates with you. You will want to be focused on one niche. What is it that you want to help a group of people with or what problem do you want to help them solve (group could be age, gender, location, experience level, degree or type of need, etc.)

A niche is not a product, it's a subject that you can help a target audience with. Remember, you are not setting up a shop (store), you will be writing lots of articles about your niche to help your targeted audience.

The importance of a targeted audience is that It's always better to target a specific niche with a specific solution to problems.

Kyles asks us to complete this statement.
'i want to help ____(group) with ______(problem)'

For example. I like camping.
Camping is a very broad topic with a lot of competition so to eliminate some competition in the beginning and to give my website has a chance to rank and grow in traffic, the focus needs to be a smaller scope.

For example my initial narrow scope could be: essential camping equipment for beginners. I can talk about camping, my experiences, what I have learned about camping, and how I have discovered what is really needed. Since I am quality focused, I have found good equipment which I believe is the very best. I will share my review of the equipment I use and why it is the best. Once the website is established and has a good volume of traffic, its scope can be expanded to include other things camping related.

So with my initial narrow scope, after visiting my website, a beginning camper will have a good idea of what camping is all about for a beginner and the equipment needed and the best brand products to buy. I will have many products on my niche website, but they will all relate to camping.

I am passionate about camping and want my readers to get excited about it too and feel comfortable when going for the first time that they have the necessary equipment..

So my niche is camping with an initial narrow scope. My targeted group is beginning campers wondering what equipment is needed and what the best is.

I have had some disappointing experiences so I want to help them avoid the same mistakes I have made. I will help campers buy the right equipment to make their camping experience more pleasant and safe.

I will write many content posts about camping (the how to’s, what is, etc.). A beginner camper has no idea what kind of equipment is necessary. So I will write posts about the necessary equipment. I will choose products I can recommend. I will compare products and identify the best. So after visiting my website a beginning camper will have a good idea of what camping equipment is needed and the best brand products to buy. So I will have many products on my niche website, but they will all relate to camping equipment necessary for a pleasant and safe camping experience.

Why should you narrow your niche when first starting?
The key to getting started fast is to narrow your niche down to a specific topic. This way, you will eliminate a lot of competition and get results much faster. Once your site is established and you are getting traffic you can expand your niche scope.

Keep in mind it's important to choose a niche specific enough that way the target audience arrives at the website and finds exactly what they're looking for. When you go to broad, you lose that.

Health and Wellness would be a very, very broad niche, a little too broad.

If you choose a niche specific enough with plenty of room for scaling out later you are in good shape.

Welcome to the community! I love reading self-help books myself - though I personally prefer having the solid thing in my hand. I agree with what others have stated as you may want to focus on exactly what kind of self help you want to focus on - maybe self help for business? Or self help for mastering your own mentality? I also wouldn't limit yourself to e-books. While you might like them, people like me who like the same sort of content might want to buy the physical book! (and allow you to make a commission off the sale in the process!)

Good luck and welcome again!

I'm so confused right now...

Hi everyone, please help. I'm not sure what to do, I just sort of need a direct answer. Should my domain be the same as the name of my website and Niche or just a little bit different, but the same..

I've gone through this video 3x now..

Hi

No it doesn't have to be for example Apple dot com doesn't sell apples vs tech gear.

Furthermore, tips help you with a domain name, you can use leandomainsearch dot com, you input a word and it gives you another

And a godaddy valuation tool to find a memorable name.

However nowadays domains are not so affected by SEO vs writing quality rich content with good choice of keywords, latter of which would rank you in the search engines.

I would always go for a dot com domain name vs dot net or dot org as people's perceptions when they start typing they would typically assume it is a dot com. And make sure it is spelled correctly as it cannot be edited once purchased.

I would not include dashes and check if the domain is copyrighted, trademarked and ' or registered to an established business.

You can use Jaaxy fo find something suitable and along the metrics would also search if the dot com domain is available

Look for searches (avg.) above 30 and competition (qsr. ) lower than 100, the lower the qsr the better. Starter sites SEO greater than 95.

No your domain name does not have to be the same as your niche name. You can include a few words to give the topic idea of your niche. For example: my niche making money online with affiliate marketing. I could chose a domain name "affiliatemarketing.com'. The concept of affiliate marketing is there.

Yes, your domain name and website name that appears should be the same because people will then remember your domain URL. for example my domain name is emailmarketing.com if I give my visible website name as "affiliate marketing" people will not remember my domain name URL as emailmarketing.com.

You can change your website name by going into
WordPress backoffice -> appearance -> customize -> global settings or (header or something like that - each theme wording is a little diffrent.

Are you starting with the free siterubix.com domain website. I am suggesting this because if you don't like that name you can delete it and start over. Once you buy a dot come domain name you cannot change it. And you can MOVE your siterub8lx.com website to a dot com you buy later. You will not need the dot come name to be the same as the name of your siteurbix.com free website. If you MOVE your free siterubix.com website to a dot come website everything will MOVE - Your pages, posts, images, theme,.settings.

That is the way I approach this. You can be more flexible and your domain name does not have to include your niche idea. But I like to do that for the sake of my visitors.

Does that help.

Hi.

This helps immensely. I couldn't continue on the lesson of building my website because I was just stuck at that point.

If I can just clarify, so if I want to diversify later, I can try and make sure I can scale up using that same domain so to speak correct?

For instance, My niche is on Organic Eyeshadow, but Eyeshadow on its own is still "Eye Makeup", which is a broader spectrum. So if I state "Eye makeup" in my domain and website, I could still have my niche as 'Eyeshadow', I think right?

If I understood you correctly,.. If I did, i can move onto the next lesson.

I really appreciate this, you don't understand.

You've cleared up a lot regarding this...
P.S. So, all new Premium members should get started on siterubix?

This was not clear on this lesson of training. But I guess what you saying is, should I start on siterubix.com, just incase I want to change my domain???

Thank you:-)
Reply
jghwebbrand Premium
You don't have to start with siterubix.com but a lot of premium members buy dotcom names and wish they could change them and they can't unless they buy a new one. After more thought is given to a niche a new name thought appears.

Yes, you can use the same domain name when you expand your scope which is still about your niche idea..

First don't be discouraged about what's out there. There's always room as we put our spin on things and build our site from our perspective, so it is unique to us.

When it comes to choosing a niche is more about an audience you wish to help. So for you it may be those who are eco friendly to the environment. But that still is very broad

For example if you are in yoga

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?

Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience. Your niche research which you'd fine in site content > templates:-

Questions People are Asking
How to Solutions
Resources Within the Niche
Products You Can Promote/Review
Affiliate Programs
Products
Top Authority Sites/Competitors
Low Competition Keywords
Popular Magazines / Papers / Periodicals
Advertisement Ideas / Headline Ideas

Essentially you are writing more informational posts so that you do not sound so salesy to Google and if there’s a solution, a detailed analysis review post for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.
