NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

I have a website to feature my services yoga and hypnosis and it's honestly doing rather poorly. I've tried writing articles to get people to the page, but I really have no idea, even after checking google, what people would be wanting to know enough to search. Can I narrow my niche with these? Is something there worth blogging? Help? Thanks :)

Hi-how many articles do you have on your website and has it been indexed by Google yet?

You just started, it will time before you start seeing traffic, but it will need to be indexed and then ranked by Google before anyone will find it searching. Those are really two separate niches to be honest. You only want one niche per website. Concentrate on the one you feel you have the most knowledge on.

Give Google at least 6 months to index your site, and then to start indexing and ranking your articles/posts. Then only will traffic come to your site. How else will anyone find your site, Tatrina?

Hi, If you have just started with your website, It will be a good Idea to start getting traffic from WA site feedback like I am currently doing with mine. Organic traffic will need time, work and patience. You can read my blog on how I get traffic with WA site feedback below, to see how I am doing it. All the best

Are you using Jaaxy to research keyword rankings? That tool will give you an idea as to which words/ phrases are ranking better than others.

Do you have in person clients? Try starting a conversation (or do a survey) with a few people who fit into your target market. Listen to the key phrases they use to describe their yoga and/or hypnosis interests. Plug those phrases into jaaxy to see how they rank, choose the highest ranking keywords to build your content around.

You'd think so, but apparently there is a woman not far from me who is doing hypno-yoga which was kinda what I was going for. The site's been up for a long while, but I just started figuring out what to do with it.

Great idea! I have a few, but not enough because I'm having difficulty getting seen. THANKS!

I am just going to say; this may upset you a little. But, if you are trying to promote The Wealthy Affiliate? Check your homepage; and check your stats. If you want to?

If you get the same information that I am getting; you may want to mention it to Kyle and Carson? I already have. And I am waiting to see what they do?

No Offense to anyone meant here; just trying to help The Wealthy Affiliate get better.

Hi Everyone I am Lisa from the UK and I have a niche but I am not sure if its too broad a niche as if I wanted to select baby products can I just do all the baby products and clothes or is it just one product say like prams. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hello from Nottingham! Yes, baby products is too broad. You need to show Google that you are an authority on your subject.

So, you could focus on baby sleeping or baby nutrition or travelling with babies etc.

If you chose baby sleep, you could write articles about helping your child to sleep and recommend products that would help.

If you want your niche to be all baby things you could narrow it down by a more targeted audience or by a common theme. Have a specific audience in mind. Do you love eco-friendly products, maybe all your items cater to a certain fashion style or even lifestyle.

In addition to my niche that I'm going to set up, I do have a CBD business I would like add as a registered domain (we already own it) as to take advantage of the web site design features and growing the business. Would this move make sense? Thanks for the advice. CC

Nice that you already have a registered domain.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself.
Does the move make sense?
What does your current hosting service charge?
Are you in need of ongoing training and help? Does your current hosting service provide what you need?

If you have the funding for $49 per month or $495 a year and you need training, a support community (and Site Support), a keyword research tool (unlimited usage) and the hosting of 10 websites, you can transfer your website to WA. Site Support will help you with that.

If you want to keep your current hosting service and see what the free training is all about first, you can apply what you learn in WA to your existing website.

You do have options, but your first decision is how does WA fit into your goal.

We wish you success as you do the free training and decide your next steps.

Hey Chris,

I agree with everything @jghwebbrand just said, and just thought I would try to add a little perspective. Now, it sounds to me like you are already learning things here from just the free training available?? If that is the case, in my humble opinion, I would highly recommend that you move to premium.

This is why - if you are enjoying it & learning so far, it only gets better. Absolutely there is enough within the free training to give you a complete yet general picture of how to succeed online, & also the tools to build a website. However, the next 40 lessons are where it gets really juicy! That is where you learn all the specific little actions that catapult your success & multiply it.

This platform is unlike any other I know of, & the value here is outstanding. The community, training, & coaching here are easily worth the cost alone. The website hosting & interactive platform, PLUS affiliate sales are all just icing on the cake! If nothing more than personal experience - I can assure you I don't regret it.

I hope this helps, and I would love to see you here with us in the coming years. If you ever need anything, feel free to reach out.

Blessings and success on your journey ~

Hey Chris, I absolutely agree with both comments.WA is unparalleled when it comes to training, technology and community. If the move makes sense to you, then why not?

As a member of WA for already three years, all I can add is that I'm happy with the service here and will be a member for life. The platform is continuously improving and things are just getting better and better as time goes by. So if you want to take the advantage of everything you get here, then why not?

But the decision is up to you.
