NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

I'm just wondering, if i already owned a domain name from namecheap, will i be able to use that one instead? Or when I sign up for Premium Membership, does that mean i have to get rid of my domain from Namecheap and then just get it from WA instead?

I guess what I'm basically asking is,
What is the smart thing to do?

Hi

Yes you can as and when you become a Premium as hosting is provided with a premium subscription to the platform.

When you sign up Premium, you may transfer or point your domain to WA servers if no content.

If site has content and again when you become a Premium you can then contact site support for assistance migrating site.

namecheap domain names can be hosted on WA servers.
Here's how to do it. As a free member I would start with your free website .siterubix.com and learn how to set up a website using WordPress. If you like what you accomplish, when you become a Paid Premium member you can MOVE your sitebuix.com website to your domain name . Everything moves (your images, content, theme) You do nothing but click the MOVE button. You can do that if you point your namecheap domain name DSN to WA servers. as shown in the attached blog above.

Enter the two WA Hosting nameservers

Primary: NS1.MYWAHOSTING.COM
Secondary: NS2.MYWAHOSTING.COM

Well I started. My domain "Beautiful books, art and things". Word press is a bit clunky to use- a wix site is much easier to set up. Hopefully I'll persevere and get through all the tech stuff. A big day- day 1. Thanks for the support so far. Great to have a supportive community. Fabulous actually.

That's certainly understandable. After doing this for so long we forget what is common. Don't worry about what you don't know focus on what the training is reaching you and you will do just fine. We started just like you many years ago with no background.

Looking at your meta description above I get the feeling that your website focuses on selling not helping.

As an affiliate marketer your goal is to help people NOT sell though selling is the ultimate goal. If I were looking for sports shoes I would click on a meta description that lets me know I can learn about them (reviews), see comparisons and know which ones are the best and why. This approach is important because you will want to get some organic (free traffic from search engines) traffic and organic traffic comes by writing something with your original ideas in your posts. That's where using Jaaxy becomes important. Jaaxy helps us find keywords people are search on with low competition.

Do a search on your niche and get some ideas about meta descriptions others use. (those that are not mega store sites)Then come up with your own original meta description..

That sounds pretty good; if it is fixed; I apologize; but I would suggest going for all types of stuff to put on your feet; you might include; boots and slippers and more; if your site is set; I apologize. I will just say; your idea seems sound; you should get lots of customers. I will just say though; it depends on your posts and links how successful you will be.

Hope this helps and encourages?

Welcome to WA
What are your interests? Your niche has to be something you are really passionate about. Nobody can pick it for you. And in order to be successful, ie earning money , you have to be serious- not "just playing around."
think about your interests: sports, internet games, camping, cars, cooking,, etc. Then break it down to one topic within your big interest.
Example: camping--best tents for camping, etc.
Pick something that you will like to write about.
Good luck

I haven't fully tested it yet. But, I will say this; if you want? Put that question in Google; if you want to? And if you want? Read a few reviews.

So I've just set up my title and tagline on SEO plugin, is my site live yet? Just thinking if it is live and users visit it in it's current state (currently has no content) will it put those users off from visiting again?
Hope that makes sense, thank you in advance!

Hello from Nottingham! Yes, it is live as soon as you create it. However, it has not been found by Google yet, so it is not in its search engine. This is called indexing and can take a couple of weeks. You will get an email when it happens.

Realistically, it can take a couple of months before visitors come to your website, you need to add lots of content first so that Google can rank it high enough to be found. Continue to follow the training. It is laid out in a specific order that will give you the best chance of success.

WA will notify you when the search engine Google has found it and indexed it. Until them it will not be found by anyone unless your share your website URL. (address).

There is no need to be concerned because traffic does not grow that fast. Even if it does, people will come back if they are interested. They will see your site is a work in progress.

When we started we felt the same way, but now we realize this does not heed to be something of concern.
