NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

I created an About me post. I published it on my website with private access only for now. Meta Title and Meta Description are both good and green. The post shows up in the POSTS window. Now I want to move it to my header menu as shown in the tutorial, but it won't show up in the ADD MENU ITEMS of the MENUS window, however hard I check that everything is right. Am I missing anything?

Welcome to WA. We are delighted to meet you.
Why are you marking your about me page as Private access.

If you are concerned about its content, you can use the following as a guide. Your About Me post needs a status of "published" then you can got to posts section for choosing an item and add it to your menu.

Search engines are going to want an About Me to crawl for your site.

Update the access as it cannot be seen by your visitors in it's private mode

The content is only draft. I am learning and I want to be able to use the interface before anything else. Right now it doesn't work.

Thanks for your reply. No problem with the content. I just have an issue with the interface.

From your admin dashboard, select appearance from the side bar and select menu from the drop-down list.
Navigate through to post and drop it,that's where your post is and you can add it to your menu.
I hope you find this helpful.

I don't know what you mean by dropping it from the POSTS menu. There doesn't seem to be any dropping option. However, the post now showed up in the ADD MENU ITEMS box, so I could transfer it to the menu. The red lock still appears in the MENU NAME box however. This doesn't show in the tutorial. I asked WA about this and am actually wainting for their reply.

Hi

An about me is typically a post and it goes in your Primary menu as per training. Hope this helps.

For an about me post, there's no minimum, you can write as many words as you like on your “About Me” post. I would elaborate as much as possible. This is the first contact your visitors have with your site, they want to know the founder, what's the site about, can they establish rapport and above all can they trust the site and is it content worthy and user experience friendly. What would be your USP (unique selling point) - Think of it when you walk in a store, what would you like to see and what would your first impression be. If it doesn't hold to your standards you'd leave, same with your about me page, if the visitor doesn't feel at ease, they will click away.

You can also promote WA on your About Me post if you were to choose your own interest / hobby niche. You may then include a paragraph middle of page or towards end, adding few features about the benefits of joining the WA platform and there you can hyperlink your own unique affiliate link which you can fetch via the $ sign top menu. If you happen to have created it as a page you can easily switch it back to a post by using the Post Type Switcher.

You may add that to your Plugins as you are a premium member.

In quick edit, you can select whether you want it a post or a page, and update changes. Hope this helps.

if I wanted to use a video on my web page to make it more interesting, for example from YouTube. is it possible to get something from the video owner for the traffic?

also is it possible to see a website made by a premium member just to see what is possible if I go premium. I have only just started but don't really get the page I have now.

within the training at a higher level you are shown how to embed a video onto your page...
as a starter you can do this but it may slow your site down as you cannot add plugins to help delay the loading....
but to add the video you goto youtube and find the share button ...normally under the video...
click on that and then click on the embed video...
copy the code...
come back to your page and add ( click the + at hte top left) a html block...
paste the code in there and click preview and you will see hte video thumbnail...
when searching on google you probably have come across sites made by members, almost anything is possible...
try having a look at some of the sites in the comments thread have fun

Hi - although you can use a YouTube video on your website, you won't receive any compensation from the owner.

If a member wishes to share their website, it will be on their profile page, but you would have to be in their network to see it.

Or you can take a look at the comment request thread. To be honest, the websites built here are no different from any you might see on the internet.

In fact, you may have already seen some WA websites when doing a Google search but wouldn't see them as being any different from any other site.

Keep on rocking!

Yes. after your have the basics of your website set up and you have niche content posts added you can embed a YouTube video in your post. Youtube videos can be placed in your posts making sure the owner gets the credit and that is it Using someone else's Youtube video in your post will not give you the Youtube owners traffic. Some visitors may click to the Youtube owner's website, but the majority of the time they won't. Youtubes are a way to visualize what your post is addressing and are very effective.

As for WA members examples. Here are some of Kyles websites: realdealaffiate.com;
Jays, WA webinar instructor: standingworkplace.com and homesafetylab.com (just started).

We wish you much success.

Hi

I make sure the YouTube video is relevant and of good content, it has an embed share and as far proceeds no, however there's chance your visitors may click on it and watch it in YouTube, and follow the YouTuber who posted it.

Please also be aware that you cannot edit any part of the video, you'd have to share it as is.

To view other peoples' work, same as the others have mentioned, however more I would go to Google and insert

I have so many niche ideas, and I`m not sure which on to choose, I really passionate about fitness, and Recently discovered how awesome Jump rope is and i was thinking of going into that, because it narrows it down quite nicely as the fitness niche itself is massive.
The other one is music, and I`d like some advice here on what would be the easiest to market. Instruments and accessories or ablums and LPs as many people have started getting into record collection again.

some advice would be great.

Hi

The question is WHO would be your target audience vs Not what you are selling to an audience.

You need aim for ONE focused niche with a specific group of people, I'd go with what's best resonates with me.

The recommendation is to focus on ONE site starting out as it takes lots of effort and work get it going, however once you know what you are doing, then the learning curve would be less steeper to scale up.

That's a great niche to be in however broad you may want to narrow it down to a subcategory starting out, otherwise you will find it very hard to get noticed by the search engines and to compete with big authority sites. Target audience is important too, who would you be writing to, once you are able to identify them, you are closer to finding a focused niche.

Once a site starts gaining traction, traffic and authority you can then scale to cover another subcategory.

See example blog post below A niche subject is something you are passionate and genuinely interested in could be a hobby or an interest, and know so well you can write plenty original content about.

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

You may consult with https://answersocrates.com/ for further research into finding a subcategory starting out. You can search what real people are asking as in Questions, Prepositions, Comparisons, in the past, letters and query. It is also great if someone wants to write a thorough research based article.

For example if you are in fitness
Aerobic fitness techniques for beginners

https://blog.feedspot.com/fitness_blogs/

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?

Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience. Your niche research:-

Questions People are Asking
How to Solutions
Resources Within the Niche
Products You Can Promote/Review
Affiliate Programs
Products
Top Authority Sites/Competitors
Low Competition Keywords
Popular Magazines / Papers / Periodicals
Advertisement Ideas / Headline Ideas

Essentially you are writing more informational posts so that you do not sound so salesy to Google and if there’s a solution, a detailed analysis review post for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.

Welcome to WA. So great to meet you.
Glad to hear you have a lot of interests.
Which one of your interests are you most passionate about? And have the most knowledge about and want to help people with?

From our perspective Album collection is difficult because people have their own outlets where they purchase and want to see what they are buying - the condition and if it the original artist...

Doing something with jump ropes sounds promising.

So after you decide your focus it is important to identify the audience you with to help because you will be writing 100+ posts about your chosen niche.

Here are some general niche tips you can apply to your interests.

A niche is something you feel super excited to write about, a skill you have attained, something that resonates with you. You will want to be focused on one niche. What is it that you want to help a group of people with or what problem do you want to help them solve (group could be age, gender, location, experience level, degree or type of need, etc.)

A niche is not a product, it's a subject that you can help a target audience with. Remember, you are not setting up a shop (store), you will be writing lots of articles about your niche to help your targeted audience.

The importance of a targeted audience is that It's always better to target a specific niche with a specific solution to problems.

Kyles asks us to complete this statement.
'i want to help ____(group) with ______(problem)'

For example. I like camping.
Camping is a very broad topic with a lot of competition so to eliminate some competition in the beginning and to give my website has a chance to rank and grow in traffic, the focus needs to be a smaller scope.

For example my initial narrow scope could be: essential camping equipment for beginners. I can talk about camping, my experiences, what I have learned about camping, and how I have discovered what is really needed. Since I am quality focused, I have found good equipment which I believe is the very best. I will share my review of the equipment I use and why it is the best. Once the website is established and has a good volume of traffic, its scope can be expanded to include other things camping related.

So with my initial narrow scope, after visiting my website, a beginning camper will have a good idea of what camping is all about for a beginner and the equipment needed and the best brand products to buy. I will have many products on my niche website, but they will all relate to camping.

I am passionate about camping and want my readers to get excited about it too and feel comfortable when going for the first time that they have the necessary equipment..

So my niche is camping with an initial narrow scope. My targeted group is beginning campers wondering what equipment is needed and what the best is.

I have had some disappointing experiences so I want to help them avoid the same mistakes I have made. I will help campers buy the right equipment to make their camping experience more pleasant and safe.

I will write many content posts about camping (the how tos, what is, etc.). A beginner camper has no idea what kind of equipment is necessary. So I will write posts about the necessary equipment. I will choose products I can recommend. I will compare products and identify the best. So after visiting my website a beginning camper will have a good idea of what camping equipment is needed and the best brand products to buy. So I will have many products on my niche website, but they will all relate to camping equipment necessary for a pleasant and safe camping experience.

Hi

What you need to do is to create an empty page and call it "Blog" i.e. [domain].com/blog and add it to your menu.

Then all your posts would be included under that blog page, when visitors click blog, they can see all of your posts.

Hope this helps.

Hello everyone, hope you are all well. Sooooo I think I know my Niche…..It’s got to be tech and probably big boy gadgets but the problem is they are all to expensive, I used to fly a drone for a company I used to work for and took still photos and videos with it and I’ve flown RC planes and helicopters too but like I say, I don’t own any and can’t afford them so how can sell and review them? Welcome to WA. We are so delighted to meet you.
WOW! What a wealthy of experience you have. You can certainly use your experience without having to own or buy. You can still review them. Affiliate marketing is a great way to go because you can review and talk about about your niche, but you don't need to own it, ship ti or bill for it when visitors to your site click on your affiliate product links. The training will explain all about that. We know that drones are a very popular niche.

So to start with it will be important to narrow your niche to a manageable scope for a targeted audience.

The real key to your first niche is to choose the one you are most passionate about, know the most about and can help people with it and know the related problems and how to solve them. That is the ideal niche for you.

You will be writing 100 plus original helpful content posts to help people in your chosen niche.

Hi

Fist off, drones is a great niche and probably combined with nature seeking makes it even more enjoyable and for solo travelers. This is just an example.

There's so much you can do with this niche, and if your concern is regarding gear, I'd say you can always look up other people's work and research, however all content must be original written in your own words.

I would start off with one focused subcategory and once that's exhausted move into another and so on.

In the beginning you'd want to choose something you can create lots of content about going forward.
