NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

Is affiliate marketing even viable in 2022? I mean I can see the relevance 10-15 years ago. It’s just hard to see new people really making good money via just AM. Please, correct me if I’m wrong. I’m just really trying to efficiently and effectively use my time online to create passive income. Also, do the courses teach others methods, such as getting paid to submit articles, pay per click, surveys and things of that nature? Or do we just try and get people to buy from our website here? Do we learn about Search Engine Optimization, Social Media Marketing, etc…? Sorry, I’m thinking out loud, trying to grasp it all!

More people than ever rely on the internet to answer their questions. That's why there is such a big opportunity. Choose a niche you know a lot about, know questions people ask, and then write answers using posts. You can get well over 5kl visitors a month. The training teaches you what to do.

Your website must be more than just products because then you would just be yet another shop among the millions already out there and Google would not rank your site high enough to be found.

Your website will be the "home" for your niche brand. From there you can use social media or whatever other means you choose.

Hi Angelo, yes, affiliate marketing is viable in 2022. I asked the same question in 2016 when I started getting serious about affiliate marketing, thinking I had missed the boat. Far from it. Not only have I been earning a full-time income online for years now, but I've also seen people who started years after me who are now making far more than me.

So I definitely understand the doubt and uncertainty. I had it too. But what options did I have? I had the same doubt about everything. So I could have did nothing. I could have kept searching for something different for months or years.

There will be countless people who are starting today, looking back in the years to come when they are earning their full-time income online, thankful they started and did anyway. Despite their doubts and uncertainty.

And for sure, most people don't monetize with just affiliate marketing. I don't either, but the strategies to build an audience are all the same, whether it's affiliate marketing, your own products, display advertising, etc.

Affiliate marketing makes up about a third of my income. I also monetize with display ads and lead generation. But it all comes from the same audiences.

It doesn't matter what it is. There are people right now saying or thinking it's too late. Too late to start a YouTube channel, too late to get big on TikTok, too late to get into podcasting, that SEO is dead, and on it goes.

And yet, they also know that five years from now, there will be successful YouTubers who haven't even shot their first video today. Who are still too nervous to get in front of the camera.

There will be new TikTok stars... or new stars on a yet-to-be-developed platform where those with TikTok or YT skills were perfect for, and gave them a head start.

There will be new podcasts that no one has heard of today, and... people will still be searching Google or some other search engine for answers to their questions. New questions about events, products, people, movies, and things that don't even exist today.

There will be people searching to learn how to do whatever the "thing" to do in 2027 is.

And people will be searching to learn how to use the software, the platforms, play the games, etc., that are popular in 2027 and beyond.

There will also be entirely new opportunities that no one has even thought of. And they'll be opportunities that those who are already in the game, who have the skills, the mindset, the habits, the confidence, etc., have a much better chance of capitalizing on.

And there will be countless people who sat by the sidelines overwhelmed with uncertainty, doubt, a fear of failure, lack of confidence, or whatever... who will look back and wish they started sooner.

Hi Angelo, all great questions and concerns. I am new here as well with similar concerns but the more I searched and looked at reviews of all the many many other Affiliate Marketing sites. I eventually after months of that, stopped for a month or so. Then a week or so ago I had a feeling to take a look again. Saw something on YouTube and the rest is history. I happened to find this WA through another search reviewing another site and was linked to WA. I perused around the site and signed up right away. From the moment I started here I was made to feel very secure and comfortable. I chose to invest as much time and effort as possible through diligence in participating, following others and I ask questions. A lot of questions. Kyle one of the founders has been a mentor to me and very helpful as well as so many others here in this big family. I look at this as a my last hurrah and I am having so much fun doing this. After day three I signed up for Premium which is a great bargain of million dollar info and effort from over 2 million members. This site is a 4.9/5 on Trusted sites, too. Granted one can do this pretty much for free but the minimal investment offers so much more compared to some sites that wanted boat loads of money for little in return. Already (9 days) I feel I have got more out of Premium than I expected and there is so much more available. I purchased two Domain names last night and feel so good about this choice more and more each day. I know I will never be left alone in this venture and also make new friends. This is invaluable to me. Others like myself trying to help each other succeed. Not much of that around anymore. With over 3 Billion people online & 5 million + products to choose from in the internet world 24/7, there's plenty of abundance for everyone! But as with anything for me. If it's good it takes an energy of positivity, a mind-set of success through repetition, faith/belief, diligence, time, effort, goals and have fun doing it. We all deserve the best in life don't let anyone or anything try to deter that. Have fun Angelo. I know I am. Best always, David

Hello all! Been working 6 days a week and fighting a bad cold. I feel as if I did something wrong or missed a step. I tried to do the menus but everything looked wrong, Going back over the tutorial to see if I can identify where I went wrong. Figure worst-case scenario, I get rid of everything and start over, 5 weeks in, and still haven't set up 1 website, I will see what I can figure out, and if I stall out will come back here for assistance again. I hope you are having a memorable weekend. I work on Sundays.

You first need to create a menu in appearance > menus and then you can add items to it - it is easy and can be done in a few minutes.

Hi Kathy, I am Stevie, I am pretty new to the course and just working my way through the steps too. I don't know if you are doing this already, but when I am working my way through the steps, I have been opening up two tabs for my WA account...
1. One for watching the instructional step-by-step videos.
2. And the other for doing my actual course.
When watching the videos I just keep pausing the video after each step and go back to the other tab and input what I have just watched.
I was finding it pretty confusing in the menu section as well, but just kept rewinding the video till it was clear and then I would apply the steps, it seems to work for me. I hope this helps.

I get it that you can make money in any particular niche - any niche can be profitable. However, my question is about efficiencies. I'm sure there are niches that pay out higher percentages than others and I just want to know how to find those niches that pay out in higher percentages. I'm not trying to be greedy, I just want to use my time wisely. Some of the few broad ideas I am mulling over are: Fitness, Sunglasses, Survival Foods, Coin Collecting/Precious Metals, College Football.

Does anyone know if any of those ideas has a higher percentage payout than another? Don't tell me they can all be profitable, I know they can, it's just like I said, I am looking for higher percentages or efficiencies.

I'll take any suggestions.
Thanks a bunch.
TheAbie Premium Plus
You need aim for ONE focused niche with a specific group of people, I'd go with what's best resonates with me.

Bottom line I would go with what I am passionate and genuinely interested in vs profitable, trendy or demanding.

jghwebbrand Premium
Fitness is a good one. But it is too broad so it is important to define who you wish to help and how.. For example. Essential home exercise equipment to those who wish to loose weight.

Start with a targeted audience and later you can expand your niche scope.

The issue is even if a niche is a promising high paying one, if you are not passionate about it burn out and boredom will set in in a few months. So choose something that excites you and you know a lot about it and could write 100 pasts about. The number is arbitrary, but it is used to make a point.

Ideas to find a niche.
Do you have any hobbies? Sports? Problems you've solved? Problems you are looking to find solutions for? Products that are amazingly helpful? Something you talk a lot about? Something you wished you had learned earlier in life? Job skill? A niche should be for a targeted group of people How to narrow a niche down How To Expand Your niche later
cgbethel8296 Premium
thank you for the response.
Honestly, what I'm passionate about I can't see how one could make money at it. My passions are spiritually related - Injustices in our world (and no I'm not "woke"), defense of the Christian faith (apologetics) and on more relaxed note, college football, architecture and voice overs. My background is architecture but in my mind that is a very limited audience.

Any further thoughts?

To help you get a better feel for internet searchers why not do a goggle search on some of your niche terms. and see what google auto suggests that will give you some idea of what you could include. Also doing those searches look at the "people also ask" section below the search and "related searches" at bottom of search results. may also be helpful.
When doing google searches also note the "ADs" displayed. Are their a lot" This means people are making money.

You could also do a browser search
yourniche idea + affiliate programs this will give you some ideas of opportunity and also scroll through and see if others are in the niche and what they are doing.

Hope those ideas result in your finding a niche you will really enjoy helping people with. You will start by writing informational posts for your niche to grow your website traffic. One niche and its website can be all you need to earn a full time income.
fitness is one of them, not sure about the others.
real estate and entertainment and you make find people out there who want to learn how to do voice overs I heard it's a lucrative business and cool to do. I'm not sure just ideas.

Hello, @cgbethel296
You are singing my song!! Spirituality is my passion as well, so I fully understand the challenge of how to (and should we?!) monetize the expression of our faith.

As an example, here's what I've done: I am teaching homeless recovery and emotional healing, and am using my passion for crafting as a means to create products for affiliate fundraising.

My main niche is homeless recovery, then linking that to my crafting tutorials and social studies lesson plans for digital product development.

Those topics give me to opportunity to speak to the "have's," and show them how they could be of service to the "have needs."

In that same manner, you could use your passion for football as a means to teach viable action plans for sports teams (and their fans) who are willing to help with homeless recovery, domestic violence extraction, meal trains for shut-ins, or sports camps for kids|adults|former felons|anyone... who is struggling with chemical addictions.

Architecture: You could use your expertise to develop housing plans and economic development in impoverished neighborhoods, then market the products needed to build those neighborhoods.
Again, draw in the sports teams to help build tiny homes for single parents, homeless vets, etc.

Draw up the blueprints for a tiny home village in areas that are the most desperate need for affordable housing. (Home Depot has an affiliate program)

Voice Overs: Aye yi yi, what fun that one would be!! So many people are searching for a way to do business online. Show your audience how to create a podcast, the basics of becoming a voice over talent, instructions for reaching out to agents, etc.

All of those topics provide you with opportunity to recommend products related to each of those areas.
Football fan gear, books you recommend for aspiring architects, or microphones and recording gear and services, to name a few...

Those are the first things that came to mind, so I hope that will help spark some inspiration for you. I think your greatest challenge will actually be to choose just one niche to get started with.
: )

I think you have made a good choice by doubling back to WA, and wish you great success as you dive into your studies of affiliate marketing!!

As an individual with healthcare background, I have alsways have an passion for helping people manage diabetes. I have several family members that are diabetic. OI want to know, though, how can I market diabetes lifestyle programs and products without having diabetes myself? Can I sell something I myself do not require on a day to day basis? How can I say it works if I am not the ideal candidate to 'test-run' such products?
jghwebbrand Premium
If yu come from a medical background does that mean you ar3e educationally qualified? That is the kind of qualifications needed to have a site for personal health related issues and recommending treatments.

If you are qualified as a medical professional obviously no one has everything they treat. But it is the education and experience that make it possible to help others..

Indeed. Forgot about that perspective. Nice. Much appreciation.

Firstly as a niche is not a product vs a subject you would help people by giving them advice on an aspect, walk them through your journey and then promote products however relevant.

You may search Programs

You can do a google search

Your niche + affiliate programs + location

Hi everyone, I was looking for advice please on Niche selection, I think that seems to be the stumbling block for a lot of people, certainly for me.
Looking at a lot of your articles and questions from other members I have finally (fingers crossed) picked a niche.

I was thinking about Camping, Camping guide for beginners, Basic / Essential equipment needed for camping.
I am from Scotland and love to get away as much as I can in the Outdoors so I thought this might be a good fit, my niche would focus mainly on Scottish camping.

Any thoughts or advice on this please?

Also I have found a domain name on Namecheap, can I purchase this and use it on my WA website?
TheAbie Premium Plus
Great endeavor, you ought to discuss an aspect of camping to a qualified group of people who would be your target audience.

Camping essentials for beginners or some other group you have in mind.

The more focused a niche website is starting out, the better chance it has to start having traction and traffic.

So you can start with one subcategory and once totally exhausted scale out. See example blog post below Please be aware you also need to create lots of content addressing issues related to your focused niche website.

Most important is to be passionate and genuinely interested in your niche You can purchase however please be aware that hosting is included with a premium subscription to the platform.
Stevie10 Premium
Thats great ,thanks for your time and advice again. I think I will try out the above as a niche "Camping essentials for beginners" I have to start somewhere. I am just unsure at this stage about picking a domain name ,
Do I pick one within WA ?or do I purchase a domain elsewhere without hosting?
For eg I seen a good fitting domain name on Namecheap, can I purchase the domain name itself and transfer it over to WA or would you recommend another idea?
DianeScorpio Premium
Hello from Nottingham! As a free starter member, you can only use the free subdomain that you are given by WA.

You cannot purchase a domain either here or elsewhere, and have it hosted here, that is not included in the free starter package.

If you buy a domain without hosting, it won't be live on the Internet.
Stevie10 Premium
Thanks for replying Diane, so in Premium membership I can go ahead with the above question?
jghwebbrand Premium
Yes, that is a very good niche especially if you choose your targeted audience as beginners because there is so much informational type posts that can be written. A great way to find questions to write informational post responses to is google search and

Your paid premium membership covers the hosting of 10 websites. If you purchase your domain name from a 3rd party registrar the domain name DNS (data name servers) can be pointed to WA.

WA Name Servers for Wealthy Affiliate Hosting ALWAYS are: DNS settings
That sucks! They want you to upsell before you even get started!!
TheAbie Premium Plus
Congrats on becoming a premium subscriber.

You can use leandomainsearch dot com, you input a word and it gives you another

And a godaddy valuation tool to find a memorable name.

I'd also use this site to check if the name is also available on social media platforms.

However nowadays domains are not so affected by SEO vs writing quality rich content with good choice of keywords, latter of which would rank you in the search engines.

I would always go for a dot com domain name vs dot net or dot org as people's perceptions when they start typing they would typically assume it is a dot com. And make sure it is spelled correctly as it cannot be edited once purchased.

I would not include dashes and check if the domain is copyrighted, trademarked and ' or registered to an established business.
TheAbie Premium Plus
You may transfer or point to WA servers (if transferring domain has to end in .com, .net or .org.

To update your domain DNS settings to point to WA. Here are the DNS settings.

These settings will be updated within your domain registrar (where you purchased your domain) after the transfer has taken place. To transfer your domain here you need login current registrar and fetch the EPP code, there's a one year charge of $15, privacy included. One year more will get added to your domain.

Also it has to have passed the grace period of 60 days.

Hi - you can stay as a free member for as long as you want but can only work on your free website for 6 months. You will also be limited to the first 10 lessons of each of the 2 training courses.

In effect, the free membership allows you to experience the platform and decide if it's right for you without even inputting your credit card details.
