NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

Hi, I have two main ideas for my niche. Either earphones (Airpods, Bose ear buds, Low budget ear pods etc) or golf clothing & accessories. I'm just wondering which one sounds like a better idea.

I am passionate about both golf and music, but am not an expert on what golf clothing is best or what different types of earphones are best for their specific fields.

Firstly as a niche is not a product vs a subject you would help people by giving them advice on an aspect, walk them through your journey and then promote products however relevant.

You need aim for ONE focused niche with a specific group of people, I'd go with what's best resonates with me.

You ought to discuss an aspect of music or golf to a qualified group of people who would be your target audience.

The more focused a niche website is starting out, the better chance it has to start having traction and traffic.

Please be aware you also need to create lots of content addressing issues related to your focused niche website.

Most important is to be passionate and genuinely interested in your niche The recommendation is to focus on ONE site starting out as it takes lots of effort and work get it going, however once you know what you are doing, then the learning curve would be less steeper to scale up.

You will be writing a lot of content to grow traffic on your site. The content will include both informational (how to, what is, why, guides ) and product reviews. Which one would you feel most comfortable writing content to help people with? Which one do you know problems about and know how to solve? People use the internet for find help and solve problems. You can sue answersocrates.com to find questions people may ask about your niche idea.

A niche should be for a targeted group of people How to narrow a niche down How To Expand Your niche later Your website must be more than just products because then you would just be yet another shop among the millions already out there and Google would not rank your site high enough to be found.

strength training is how I lost weight, so my target audience would be people who would like to lose weight and I offer them a solution through strength training, though I haven't been hitting hard the last couple months I did consistently for 3 years so It is a passion. does this sound like a good niche?

You could run with that, adjust and adapt down the line if need be. You may start off with a subcategory, and once totally exhausted move on to discuss another, so on and so forth.

Yes, that sounds like a great narrowed niche. And the best part is you are passionate about it, have experience and can speak from the heart. To start your site you will want to create informational posts to grow traffic. Resource you can use to find questions people may have: answersocrates.com. I decided to narrow it down even more to resistance bands that's still going to help people who have either just started or fallen off and want to get started again, then I'll add more as time goes on and I gain trust. Thank you I'm so excited!

I have already started my own website through Bluehost and word press and I have a domain already. If I wanted to not lose my website or domain but switch over to here for more guidance, and training how can I do that without losing anything from my website I already have. I know I will lose my money I already spent but it would be worth it. If you can get me further.

Ok guys, I have another question ..

Is the niche that we're choosing for a one product website that we're going to develop? Or are we coming up with a niche that we can have multiple products to sell on our one website?

Also, when we finalize our niche, are we going to end up having to join different company's affiliate program to upload products such as Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc? For example, will I have to make an account with all those companies as well as pay a monthly membership fee to get affiliate links to put on my own niche website?

Hope that wasn't confusing .. Sorry just trying to gain a better understanding of the bigger picture of what I'll be getting into after training is complete.

Hi - you can promote as many products as you wish, providing they all relate to your niche.

Yes, you will need to apply to join affiliate programs, but they are free.

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

It is a process, it first starts with choosing a focused niche site, onward building relevant content addressing issues in relation to your niche site, getting ready for affiliate programs.

There's subscription fees to use this platform, however no fees to joining programs, if ever there's a fee that would be reimbursed with the first commission check.

A niche is a topic of interest, a focus on a topic for a targeted group of people to help them. A niche is not a product. For example essentials for beginning campers to have a safe and enjoying camping experience. The products included will be those that relate to your niche so can be many more than one product.

You will be writing posts for people to read on your website - who would be the audience you wish to write for and help? You will be writing both informational posts and product reviews. What kind of questions would people be asking about your niche that you can help them with as well? Your informational posts are important to grow your traffic.

A niche should be for a targeted group of people How to narrow a niche down How To Expand Your niche later You are free to sign up with as many affiliate programs as you wish, but the more you join and use affiliate links from the more complicated it becomes to remember which affiliate program each belongs to.

Hi,
I'm still working on setting up my menu page. I've managed to get my 'About me Page' and the 'Privacy Policy' onto the right side under Menu Structure, but now I'm told to go to 'Menu Settings'. and click 'Primary Menu' but my page doesn't look like that at all.
This is what I have under "Menu setting', I do not have "Primary Menu'

Menu Settings

Auto add pages-
Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu

Display location- Desktop Horizontal Menu
Desktop Expanded Menu
Mobile Menu
Footer Menu
Social Menu

Each theme uses slightly different terms for the "primary menu".

So what is the name of the menu you created? If it appears at the top in your header that is the same as the "primary menu".

Based on your above description, your theme also allows for a footer menu and social menu. Plus it looks like you can set up a separate menus for desktop and mobile. That is different from the usual. If you have a mobile phone you can see what the Mobile menu would look like if you create one for it. The same is true fro the desktop menu.

Your menu will not look exactly the same. That is okay.

Hi again,
Thanks for helping, yes everything about all my pages does not look anything like the training videos or lessons, I'm having such a hard time.

Ok, I titled my menu 'Menu 1', so I guess you are saying that my title is the same as 'primary menu' I got that but under the menu settings should I be checking off all those choices? There is no option for Menu 1 or primary menu. Do I select all of these? I'm not computer savvy in the least.
1.Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu
2.Desktop Horizontal Menu
3.Desktop Expanded Menu
4.Mobile Menu
5.Footer Menu
6.Social Menu
I'm not computer savvy in the least.

Thanks!

As a beginner it looks like your theme is too complicated.
Would you be opposed to changing themes. Generate Press may not be your favorite because it doesn't have a place for a header images, but it is a much simpler theme to use. Changing your theme will not affect your pages and posts. You cam have to create a new menu, but it seems that is best so you can follow along better with the training.

How does that sound?

Theme...Uumm, do you mean the photo I selected? I see 4 photos or themes I don't know why there are 4, I only selected one, it's the 1st one a photo of Italy to go along with my niche. If that's what you're talking about I'd love to get rid of the other 3. What's Generate Press?

I'd like to have an image.

I feel so lost.

Yes, the 4 that displayed (wordpress backoffice left hand side see appearance -> hover and see 4 images - those are themes They have features built into them. KEEP the 4 of them there so your site has a default one to use in case the one you have chosen has issues.

Yes, the theme you have chosen to "activate" has a complicated menu feature.

To understand the concept of "menu" and follow the training it really would be best to Activate Generate Press. Generate Press should be pone of your theme options.
