NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

Hello. I'm back after a spell and am ready to get rolling! I have a few questions:

1. I have an old website that hasn't been updated in many years. Should I use it, or delete it and start fresh?

2. I have two domain names. Is there a way to link them both to my website here at WA?

3. Is there a benefit to using both domain names at once?

Thank you for your help and understanding.

Hello, I changed my domain name to here. I kept the same domain name, just hosted it here. It was pretty easy after I talked to a couple people here - you can read how to do it - I did it in a matter of a few minutes. Took me longer to decide to do it than actually do the deed. LOL. And I am glad I did.

If your website is old maybe you could use part of it. If there is content on there that you wrote and it is still relevant then it could be useful.

I would say start to go through the training and see how it lines up with what you already have. I ended up deleting my site and starting over here at WA because I like the features that go along with building a website here with WA.

Hope this starts to help. Feel free to ask more.

Use them, don't let loose them. Yes you can use both domains at the same time, with different themes.

And yes, you can link both sites with the "redirect" comand. The only issue is that you need a new URL for each one on the main CPanel of the Hsting.

Happy to help you out here Ian.

1. I have an old website that hasn't been updated in many years. Should I use it, or delete it and start fresh?

If you have content on that website, it might be in Google's bad books if it has been neglected. Just something to consider. You may want to start with a fresh domain, if you are going to start out with a new website.

2. I have two domain names. Is there a way to link them both to my website here at WA?

Sure, you can link any websites that you want with the hosting here at WA. You will just need to update the DNS settings and you will be able to use your domain with the hosting here.

The DNS is also known as the "nameservers" and these are what tell your domain to look for your website, which in this case is going to be the hosting here at WA.

Here are your DNS settings again (also within that tutorial):

ns1.mywahosting.com
ns2.mywahosting.com

You can update this within your domain registrar (where you bought the domain). Upon doing so, you will be able to start building your website here within 24 hours, the time in takes for your new nameserver settings to propogate.

3. Is there a benefit to using both domain names at once?

No, there is not. You want one domain per niche, and there is little to no benefit to doing a redirect.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

Hello, first, a big thank you for this lesson here. I am so new to everything here, but unh, I am scared about one thing: what if I discovered my nich but have poor knowledge of English language, if I don't have good grammar command, what would be my end result. Thanks.

It looks like you can read English. And there is nothing wrong with your statements here If I were you I would not worry. What really counts is your sincerity to help people and share what you learn. You will learn some tips on how to do that in the training. Keep going.

We are so glad you are enjoying th4e training. It is so nice to have you here.

We do wish you much success.

Wow! Thank you for this response. One question please: could you explain deeper what you mean by this statement found in your response?: "It looks like you can read English. And there is nothing wrong with your statements here".

I was able to read what you wrote in your comment above. That is why I believe you should not worry so much about your ability with English. I think you are capable to do this.

If you have a question when you do the training, let us know. You are learning some new concepts and they take time to understand. English is my primary language, but it still takes me time to learn the training. It is a new skill and it takes time to learn a new skill.

I hope that helps you.

Wishing you much success.

Hi Friends,

Is "About me" post necessary ?
I'm still confused about it ! what if I live in a different country (amazon doesn't exist) , will the audience accept that ?
what if the niche is not my passion , how could I create a story like this ? can you offer more samples ?

Thanks

if you have no interest in your niche then this will come through
but an about me is part of the know like trust you need from the visitors
some will buy direct from an article, but a lot will take the time to have a look at the site and decide whether they trust it...as there are a lot of sites out there now then they have the choice....
so if there is nothing about the person/company running the site ...bye ...i will look for one that does....
so maybe start liking your niche and tell them the reason you want to help them solve their problems...
good luck
phil
business is about helping people - if you prove your worth to others they will give back ...that's human nature...
if you go out to sell to others then you may stumble...

Hi - I wouldn't advise having a niche you have no interest in. You will be expected to write a lot of content for your website about your niche. 2 or 3 articles every week.

Can you think of lots of topics to write about for the niche you have chosen?

Your About Me page Tells those who visit your site a little about you, why you chose your niche, why you website exisits.
Check out Jays, our live Webinar Instructor's, websites About me Page the website address is footballsnackhelmets.com or check out Kyles website realdealaffiliate.com they will give you some ideas.

It is important to like your niche. You are too choose a niche you like not what someone else says. Need some ideas? Can you shop on Amazon yourself in your country?

Unfortunately the affiliate marketing in my country is not so strong !
I mean no big stores offer an affiliate program ! & Amazon doesn't exist
Thank you for the references, I'll check them

Do people shop online? It doesn't necessarily need to be a Big store that has an affiliate program. Many online websites give free shipping if the purchase price exceeds a certain amount. Does it work that way in your country too?
Reply
Husam-89 Premium
Yes they do shop online
But the online affiliate concept does not exist
So don't you recommend to target other countries ?

I just watched how to make money on your website. Do I need to feature a product on my website? I already have a website on home decorating that I'd like to promote and a blog on empty-nesting that I'd like to somehow incorporate into 1 website. Is that possible and would that promote a sale of something where I could make a commission?

Hi, eventually yes if it serves a purpose. You'd want write informational posts addressing issues related to your niche and if there's a solution / product that can solve their issue, you would write a review to help your visitors make an informed decision whether to click your links and go purchase the item / solution you have proposed. You'd have done your research well and outlined a plan.

Home decorating is a very interesting niche.
Do you get traffic to your existing website? Or do you have a social following? As you do the Wealthy Affiliate Training, you can check your existing website and see if you following the WA teaching. The WA training gives some very important things that help a website rank and get traffic.

After you get traffic you can look for products that relate to your website pages and blogs.

Does your empty nesting blog give helpful information and ideas? Are there products related to any of your ideas?

Without visiting your websites I can't be sure, but it seems that both of them need to be separate websites because their focus seems to be completely different.

The cost of a domain name is quite reasonable. WA charges $13.99 per year. I don't know what your current domain registrar charges.

Just a thought to consider.
I don't know your situation at all, but one of the options you do have if you want to continue as a Premium member at $49 per month, you could transfer your existing websites to WA. This all depends on your long term goals and what makes sense for you.

We wish you much success.

Hi everyone,

I already built a website but since I became premium and I would like to redo it by using a great design. I am just wondering what you recommend , should I get a registered domain or use a free one?

I guess in the beginning while I am building website and blogs I cloud use free and when it looks better I cloud switch to registered?
What are your thoughts?

Wonderful day to you All

Hi how I start this website

Depending on what your site is based around, you can click through and add different themes to your website until you find one that works best for you.

My site is a blog, and I went with the "Bam" theme on wordpress. But I downloaded and tried 15 themes before I found the one that I liked.

I would also suggest that while you continue to build out your site, and learn/implement the training, you use a free domain. It might take a little while for your content to get indexed and for you to start seeing traffic coming in. Use the free domain until you get a feel for how to use wordpress and create content. You can always buy the paid domain later when you are ready and the site is up and running how you want it to be.

I hope this helps!

Best regards,

-Chris W.
