NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

Another question, my SEO ranking for my about page is only 63/100, is that a problem? In the analysis portion it show that my Meta description length is too short, I chose the Permalink option, what should I select there? And it also show that there are no internal or external links. Do we need any links in the About Page? Thanks.

Hi

A very good score is between 60 and 80. For best results, you should aim for 70 and above.. These are just guidelines, however it should not replace quality content however both can be achieved.

It gives you a more in-depth analysis into your optimization efforts

could you not link to your contact me page...
and an authority site on a larger part of your niche.....
always good to have links on a page as this will show google ( and your visitors) that it is a piece of connected information rather than isolated or orphaned.....
hopefully you have added an image and setup the alt text....
the meta desription is your chance to tempt the searchers to clikc on your link.....
read your back and see if it has a curiosity value or something that will make people think that they must find out more about this person or site....
good luck Dirk

If you wish to add your own meta description you can do so.

If you wish to add your own rather than use the tab you can do the following.

To delete the description tag if you are using a mobile, input one or two characters then you are able to delete it.
If using laptop place cursor in back of the tag and press the back space key.

I have two questions about choosing a niche:
First my location/origin. I am from Spain and live there. Does the platform takes into consideration this issue when it directs traffic to your sites? The reason I'm asking this question is that although I would not have a problem chosing affiiliate programs based in the US, my gut tells me that there are not many people form Spain and other spanish speaking countries that are membersof this platform. Thererfore this could be an advantage in order to get results. If I'm wrong let me know.

Second question: Doesn't take the same effort to get traffic and results promoting low ticket versus high ticket product or services?. The % of commision might be de same but the amount $$$ could go from lets say 10$ to hundreds of Dollars

Hi

WA is global and has over 2 million subscribers to the platform.

You can do either, but high ticket items can be harder to shift. That's again dependent on your niche and your research.

You can do a google search
Your niche + affiliate programs
Your niche + affiliate programs + location
and see what results you get

Thank you Abie, just wanted to make sure that I don't shoot in the wrong direction regarding where to aim my efforts.

About high ticket items, I mean at this stage around 500$ to 1000$

No worries, please feel free to ask us anything anytime.

And that's good round figures for possible affiliation programs

You might find resource shared above interesting to learn more about high ticket programs, it belongs to Nathaniel

Hello Alfonso.
1. This platform has no influence when it comes to getting traffic to your site - that is entirely down to your actions.
2. Spanish has over 400 million native speakers - if you add Portuguese to the mix you have in excess of 600 million people. There is no rule to say that your site has to be in English and/or it promotes American/English goods.
3. The only 'down side' is that getting help from either WA members or from technical support may be more difficult if your site is in a different language..

High Ticket vs. Low Ticket
Low Ticket:
impulse buys (buyer doesn't check the price)
possible lower quality (possibility of more returns/complaints)
more competitors promoting the same or similar product.

High Ticket:
Buyers spend more time on research and finding best price (need to be 'sold to' more)
Usually higher quality (less returns/complaints but the complaints are 'louder' if they do happen)
Less competitors but customers are more appreciative of a nice website. The higher the quality of the product, the higher the quality of the 'shop' that it is in.

I wish you luck on your WA journey

Hi Alfonso, I hope you're doing well!

Are you talking about promoting WA to a spanish speaking audience? If so, I think it's an advantage as most people answering questions like "what's the best affiliate marketing training course" and "how to learn affiliate marketing" etc. are all in english. (You just need to use a spanish keyword tool like kwfinder)

With low vs. high ticket... it depends. And assuming we're talking about promoting WA, in my experience, the free membership and $19 first month converts really well. You could promote a $1,000 course and make more commission per sale but you'll also find the conversion rate is a lot lower, so it might just balance itself out.

Not WA in particular but affiliate programs in general
About the tools, KW tool in Spanish like KeywordsEverywhere there is none that I could find. In order to have a specific tool for it in Spanish, you have to pay Ahrefs or the like.
Most of the tools, training programs like WA are in English. In Spanish, there are some courses but are very basic and then you have to rely on paying Apps that usually are not suited 100% to your market or needs

Keyword Finder (KWFinder.com) is good for Spanish. Ahrefs is great but it's expensive when you're just starting out.

This is the issue my wife and I have with our Thai websites. It's hard to find language-specific programs. It uncovers a good opportunity though, maybe start out with affiliate programs (promoting other people's courses) and eventually, you could create your own.

You could also try looking on sites like Udemy to see if they have Spanish courses in whatever topic it is you've chosen. They have an affiliate program.

Hope this helps! Let me know.

Related to your second question.
Affiliate Marketing must focus on interest and desire to help people. Of course price of an item makes a difference, but building a niche website must focus on the passion to help others. Lack of interest in ones niche can over time lead to boredom and frustration.

I completely agree with you. However, if there is within a niche the chance to choose a higher ticket product/service that meets the criteria of quality, service, etc I most likely choose the latter

Hi there. I was thinking of approaching 40 and older women for beauty, health nutrition and moneymatters, like saving and planning for retirement. I know is a bit broad, but I'm a 43 year old women and I know I will be able to connect with them as I will use my own experience as reference....any suggestions??Should I narrow it down?

Hi - yes, you are targeting three different audiences there. You need to pick one of those niches, and even then narrow it down further.

You need to show Google that you are an authority on a specific, narrow niche. Plus, you will confuse your readers by mixing your niches.

For example, if I visit your site because I am interested in skincare for women over 40, and half your articles are about saving money, I would soon leave, and then you have lost a potential customer.

Thanks,makes sense.So,can I then have 3 different websites for 3 different niches?example:loosing weight after 40?

Yes, you have 4 niches: beauty, health, nutrition and money matters. Which one of these are you most passionate about and which one do you know most about and do you know problems you could solve?

And yes, you need to narrow down all 4 of those niche ideas. They are too broad.

Here are some blogs to inspire you in choosing one niche and narrowing it down.

Why should you narrow your niche when first starting?
The key to getting started fast is to narrow your niche down to a specific topic. This way, you will eliminate a lot of competition and get results much faster. Once your site is established and you are getting traffic you can expand your niche scope.

Hi - as a free starter member you can only have one website. As a premium member, you could have 10.

However, bear in mind that you have to research and write a lot of original content for your website, at least 2 or 3 articles per week, nothing copied and pasted. This can be time-consuming enough for just one website.

Hi

You need aim for ONE subject focused niche site with a specific group of people. If me I would go for what resonates best with me.

The recommendation is to focus on ONE site starting out as it takes lots of effort and work get it going, however once you know what you are doing, then the learning curve would be less steeper to scale up.

That's a great niche to be in however broad you may want to narrow it down to a subcategory starting out, otherwise you will find it very hard to get noticed by the search engines and to compete with big authority sites. Target audience is important too, who would you be writing to, once you are able to identify them, you are closer to finding a focused niche.

Once a site starts gaining traction, traffic and authority you can then scale to acover another subcategory.

See example blog post below A niche subject is something you are passionate and genuinely interested in could be a hobby or an interest, and know so well you can write plenty original content about.

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

You may consult with https://answersocrates.com/ for further research into finding a subcategory starting out. You can search what real people are asking as in Questions, Prepositions, Comparisons, in the past, letters and query. It is also great if someone wants to write a thorough research based article.

For example if you are in yoga
Yoga exercises for beginners

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?

Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience. Essentially you are writing more informational posts so that you do not sound so salesy to Google and if there’s a solution, a detailed analysis review post for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.

You can do a google search
Your niche + affiliate programs
Your niche + affiliate programs + location
and see what results you get

Furthermore,

Meanwhile I'd ask as many questions as I want to get clarifications,

Welcome to WA and our community.

Would be nice to hear how you are getting along. Much obliged and best wishes.

Here's a few more tips on choosing your niche.

A niche is something you feel super excited to write about, a skill you have attained, something that resonates with you. You will want to be focused on one niche. What is it that you want to help a group of people with or what problem do you want to help them solve (group could be age, gender, location, experience level, degree or type of need, etc.)

A niche is not a product, it's a subject that you can help a target audience with. Remember, you are not setting up a shop (store), you will be writing lots of articles about your niche to help your targeted audience.

Kyles asks us to complete this statement.
'i want to help ____(group) with ______(problem)'

For example. I like camping and what to help campers buy the right equipment to make their camping experience more pleasant and safe.

Camping is a very broad topic with a lot of competition so to eliminate some competition in the beginning so the website has a chance to grow, the focus needs to be a smaller scope. For example essential camping equipment for beginners. Once the website is established and has a good volume, its scope can be expanded to include other things camping related. This is just an example.

You may start with a siterubix subdomain around a focused niche and build up content, down the line have your own dot com, as some affiliate programs do not work with a subdomain. Cost of which is $14 yearly each privacy included. You can then move your siterubix to your dot com applying the move feature found within the site manager, an easy process. However hosting is included in a premium subscription to the platform.

As a premium member tier-1, you can host up to 10 sites (mix of siterubix subdomains and premiums however totalling 10.

At tier-2, you can host up to 50 premium sites.

Never, ever, have I done this topic before but given a go wouldn't hurt. I'll start with health products promotion as my niche and follow on until I run out of options. Here are some options I'll be looking at apart from products are as follow: health tips; fitness; diets; and weight loss. What I would do, to begin with, is to find/research before how to write content within my niche..(know how?) and continue with the process until it's done.

We are delighted to learn you are wanted to help people regarding health. You have a good handle on the various subcategories. I am sure you will discover that an encyclopedia could be written to cover all of those topics well.

So to begin it is important to narrow your scope so you know where you are starting, you can gain an audience interested in that aspect, ad search engines will know what you are about. If your scope is not narrowed you have thousands of websites you are competing against. To avoid that choose a narrow scope to start with and cover it very well. So you build a following. Then you can broaden your focus.

All niche ideas ultimately must be focused for an audience not a product. People search the internet for help. So you will want to be sure to help them by solving their problems.
