NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

Hey!
I am also starting with my website with football content. I was also stressed at the beginning, but I decided to don't overthink and just do a niche that I am interested in. You could try to do some content targetting a qualified group, but I think it's not neccesary.

Yes, you do have a lot of good brands.
Remember however, a niche is not a product.
A niche is an idea with a targeted audience you choose to help.
For example Essentials for beginning soccer players. The way to start with with informational blogs unrelated to specific products. What is , how do, why, guides, definitions . Look for questions people have about soccer and write answer posts to help them before you even think about products. resource: google search and answersocrates.com.

So who is the targeted audience you want to help and how and why.

Firstly as a niche is not a product vs a subject you would help people by giving them advice on an aspect, walk them through your journey and then promote products however relevant.

You ought to discuss an aspect of beauty to a qualified group of people who would be your target audience.

For example, Organic lipstick for vegans.

Okay, rather than focus on a product first like lipstick, why are you choosing it? Who do you want to help? What group of people do you wish to help? Choosing a niche is about finding a targeted group of people and helping them with problems. So maybe the reason you are choosing lipstick is to help young women choose a color that brings out the beauty of their skin.

Ideas to find a niche.
Do you have any hobbies? Sports? Problems you've solved? Problems you are looking to find solutions for? Products that are amazingly helpful? Something you talk a lot about? Something you wished you had learned earlier in life? Job skill? You will be writing posts for people to read on your website - who would be the audience you wish to write for and help? You will be writing both informational posts and product reviews. What kind of questions would people be asking about your niche that you can help them with as well? Your informational posts are important to grow your traffic. Resource for questions: answersocrates.com.

The reason why I am choosing it is because it is hard to choose the right color that goes good with my skin when bring out my beauty. Yes, I have hobbies. I swim, I do yoga, read books, run and eat.

It seems like you will be very limited and not make much money on marketing lipstick. To get traffic to your website you will be writing a lot of informational posts (100+) I see you are into swimming. Have you though about snorkeling? That would have a lot more ideas for writing informational posts and it is a good niche. What about yoga? Give it some more thought.

I was wondering if skateboard ramps is a good niche. I feel like a lot of them are litteral scams and are not well made for the price. Maybe helping people to find exactly what they want at the right price aswell as making money is a good way to start. What do yall think?

hell yeah man after being here for a few weeks I'm starting to realize just about anything can be a good niche if you enjoy researching and talking about, which it sounds like you do.

Also just after typing one search "skateboard ramps" into jaxy It came up with little competing sites. Their seems to be lots of unanswered questions about it, so if you write good content it will be a great choice.

wow! thank you mitchell :) seems like I have found something that could work. very much appreciated my man you answer questions like a pro!

Yes just about anything can be a profitable niche. Have you checked Jaaxy for possible keywords that you can write unique articles?

I’m not a skateboarder, but I can immediately think of many items I which you can do reviews on and hence create affiliate marketing possibilities.

Best of Luck Jean!

I think it's a good idea. There are all kinds of products you could review. Plus, if you are a skater, you could give tips and instruction.

Yes, sounds like a great topic. So it would be good to define your audience. so an idea would be Essentials for Beginning skateboarders. Then you can present informational posts .on what is, who do, etc. I am not a skateboarder, but maybe there are other essential things to own that are important for slake
boarding as well. So potentially you could help beginner skate boarders. answersocrates.com is a site to find common questions people may ask about it.

That is a great idea! It would create a broader audience than my original plan that's for sure ;)

Here's a completely different point of view.

Skateboard ramps is too narrow and too product focused.

Okay, every single niche has huge authority sites.

So, there will be many "skateboarding" websites that have say been around for 10 years and have 5,000+ articles.

Your aim when starting out is to completely avoid competing with them, you'll lose.

It would be like setting up your brand new burger stall outside McDonald's, it won't end well, LOL

Plus, many people come into this business thinking they'll write 10 articles and become a millionaire, eeerm NOPE.

In reality, this is a BUSINESS, and any business always takes years of hard work.

Realistically, you want to be that authority site in 10 years, with 5,000 articles on your site, and earning 6 figures a month.

Now, while it makes sense to start small, you don't want to go too small.

Of course, a website can be expanded into further Related subjects as it matures, but still again don't start too small and NEVER be specifically product related.

People HATE being sold to, therefore if you have a website that is solely based around products, you will only ever get visitors if someone is looking for a specific product.

Realistically, people go on the Internet for HELP, e.g. How do I fix my iPhone screen? Why is my brake light permanently on? Why do I feel ill whenever I eat pasta? you get the point.

So, realistically your niche is actually skateboard tricks (I'm guessing that's what ramps are used for).

So, your aim is find out what problems people have with skateboard tricks (don't write what you want, actually find out what real problems people in your niche have, and the write articles solving these problems) .

Sometimes, only sometimes, the solution will be a product, but the vast majority of the time the solution is simply about providing a good answer.

Once you establish yourself yourself as the "go-to" in your niche, who actually tries to help people rather than shove a product down their throat, people WILL trust and respect, and then buy your products happily.

I know nothing about skateboarding, but a problem could be something like:

"Why Can't I Bunny Hop Higher Than 12 inches?"

As I say, your aim is to find out what the people in your niche WANT TO KNOW.

Plus, the owner of the platform, Kyle, is an avid skateboarder and has been for years. Grab hold of him in Live Chat sometime, get his ideas too.

Well i've been skateboarding for about 10 years and I think I could genuinely help people that are starting out. This ''business'' thinking is completely new to me and I appreciate the feedback that I got. It is very kind to share your entrepreneurship ways :) I feel like I am learning way faster than i'm supposed to and I thank you for that.

Sooo, I am going through niche choices. I am leaning toward the vegan niche, not entirely sure how to narrow it down. Or do I keep it fairly broad in terms of diet, supplements, clothing etc. I have adopted the vegan lifestyle myself in the last two years and can testify of the many health benefits…. Any ideas welcome, I’m new to all this!

You ought to discuss an aspect of vegan focus to a qualified group of people who would be your target audience.

Specific type of vegan dieting and for beginners as an example

So what audience do you wish to write about vegan lifestyle for and for what purpose? It needs to be narrow to start so that search engines can rank you better. Otherwise the number of sites you are competing with is much greater.

You may want to check questions people have to help you narrow your scope with answersocrates.com. You will be writing posts for people to read on your website - who would be the audience you wish to write for and help? You will be writing both informational posts and product reviews. When you save your picture from your emails can you do a "save as" (right mouse click) that way one can control where it saves and find it later. We create a folder on our PC called WA and a subfolder called images. That way we know where to consistently look and drag them from to WA wordpress backoffice..
