NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

If I was to pick a sport as a niche what are some ideas to write about? I was thinking that a top ten products you need for such and such sports pages would work well because of the number of links you could list. Has anyone else tried a page like this if so how did it go?

Sport is too broad.

What type of sport, who it would suit, who you benefit most from what you have to offer? The question is WHO would be your target audience vs Not what you are selling to an audience.

A niche is a subject vs a product.

Example
Basketball techniques for beginners.

In the first instance, I'd ask myself

Am I passionate and genuinely interested in my chosen niche, as I I'd be expected to write lots of content, it would motivate me to update blog with succinct original content worthy my visitors week in week out.

Would I be writing about it in a years time or two or more

You can write later a top ten product page, however first you need niche down a specific type of sport to a qualified group of people who would be your target audience.

Hey yes, I would pick something like snowboarding I'm very passionate about it. I just meant sport as an example. I believe I could speak about snowboarding and the mountains that I prefer in Australia but I don't believe I could monetize it unless there was an affiliate thing for actual ski resorts and even then I'm not sure it would sell as most people already have a preference of there favorite resort.

Thanks for the response definitely shed some light, another thing I'm worried about is the number of websites I can do as I only get one in the free version, but if the first one doesn't kick off I won't be able to afford premium as I am a 15 yr old.

That is why I want the first one to hit hard quickly any suggestions that are better than a top ten products you need for the snow?

It is important to choose a specific sport. It is very important that you are passionate about the sport you choose. Which sport is that for you? And it works best if you know something about and have played it because you will be writing informational posts for it (how to, guides, what is, tips) The purpose of the site will be to help people and find solutions for related problems. Product reviews will only be about 30% of your site info.

Who is is that you would like to help and how? .

The recommendation is to focus on ONE site starting out as it takes lots of effort and work get it going, however once you know what you are doing, then the learning curve would be less steeper to scale up.

You could remain a Wealthy Affiliate starter indefinitely and your siterubix subdomain remains valid for six months from day signing up to the platform, giving you time to build content.

However the learning curve would be steeper as communications with the Wealthy Affiliate platform ceases up in 7 days from time signing up, you will not have access to coaching and sound advice. For the first seven days you can test drive the Wealthy Affiliate platform limited premium access to see if it fits with your business needs and objectives.

As and when you decide to become a Wealthy Affiliate Premium, your first month would be $19 then $49 monthly afterwards

Or $49 first month then $99 monthly afterwards for premium plus +

What is your specific niche. You will need a targeted audience so you gain a website following. It is important to start with informational posts for your niche. Not product reviews. Product reviews come after informational posts..

When following along in lesson 8, creating menus, I do not see the default menus that are shown in the training video. I also do not see any pages listed in the pages drop down menu, even though I have created pages and posts.

I went through lesson 8 before and was not successful creating the menu. is there something that needs to be reset?

In appearance > menus it is greyed out unless you first create a menu, name it and save it.

Then you can add items to it and update.

Unless you create a menu, you will NOT be able to add any items to it. You may need to empty the browser cache, refresh and try again. Try URL in a different browser or mobile device.

You can also empty servers cache.
Websites > Site Manager > Details > Sitespeed > Empty site cache

Ok lets' check.
go to Wordpress backoffice -> appearance -> menus
When in menus on right hand side do you see a menu you have created. If not create menu and save it.
Then on left hand side click page caret see your privacy policy -> add to menu. click on posts caret see your about me post.
> add to menu. Save menu on right hand side. refresh your browser and refresh your website.

I am just wondering, it is good to have a low QSR but if the traffic is only 2 hits per month if ranked number one, then is that still a good keyword topic? Ideally are we not looking for high traffic numbers that have lower QSR numbers, but still need traffic right? A low QSR without much traffic, is that still good?
Reply

Look for searches (avg.) above 30 and competition (qsr. ) lower than 100, the lower the qsr the better. Starter sites SEO greater than 95.

https://my.jaaxy.com/search/keywords

For your choice of keywords, always do an incognito search on Google before settling on a keyword, to see who appears in the top 3 positions.

Or you may do in Jaaxy tool search analysis

Tutorials

. https://my.jaaxy.com/training Your found target keywords go in the title of your post and again in first or second paragraph then write freely. Some include them towards a conclusion if it conveys a message. I'd also make sure they are grammatically correct.

Sometimes keywords may not currently have potential however this may change in the future dependent context, you may want to keep it in a list and see its progress if you believe it may become a keyword goldmine.

Hi - most people will tell you to aim for a keyword that has traffic over 30, but that's not necessarily the case. The results in Jaaxy are based on historical data and can change at any time.

And remember, eventually you will have hundreds of posts on your website, some will bring lots of traffic, some won't, there is no specific formula that will definitely guarantee results.

It all depends upon what other keyword options you have.
But the ideal is avg greater than 30 seaarches; QSR less than 50 for a new site and SEO greater than 94 for a new site. Can you rephrase your title for something better? Are you starting with information posts about your niche?

Hi everyone, I have narrowed my Niche down to 2 categories and some sub categories to go with them, I would appreciate a lot if anyone could help with what ideas may be more lucrative, easier to maintain and design, and maybe just a good start for a beginner? Here they are:

1. Investing : Day trading : tools and techniques, basically probably referring them to someones e-course on trading strategies.
2. Self Help : Becoming authentic self : This would be referring books, audio books, and of course e-courses on self help.

I would appreciate any and all help and suggestions or just advice, I am so new and a little bit of a fish out of water here.

Thanks
Eric

I would go with passionate and genuinely interested in vs profitable or demanding.

You need aim for ONE focused niche with a specific group of people, I'd go with what's best resonates with me.

You ought to discuss an aspect of a niche subject to a qualified group of people who would be your target audience. You are essentially in the business of helping your audience address their issues in your posts.

In the first instance, I'd ask myself

Am I passionate and genuinely interested in my chosen niche, as I I'd be expected to write lots of content, it would motivate me to update blog with succinct original content worthy my visitors week in week out.

Both are great however, which one would you know the most in terms of knowledge and the know how.

Would I be writing about it in a years time or two or more

Who would be my target audience, who would benefit most from what I have to offer. Thank you for your notes.

Hi - as regards your first option, this falls under what Google calls a "your money or your life" niche.

In other words, your financial advice could affect somebody's life for better or worse.

And, as such, you need to show you have professional career experience or qualifications in the subject.

So, if this is not the case, then it is not a good idea to pursue this niche, you won't see any success.

They both would work well. And basically the one you are most passionate will be the one to go with because you will be inspirited on with different ways to help people. You will be writing original content and content will flow easiest for the one you are most passionate about. The more you know and have experience with it also helps because you know how to solve related problems and present ideas.

I am very much interested in helping women especially stay at home mums get access to information about parenting, how to deal with abuse, how to earn, etc. I would love to like create a community where mums can be themselves . Stuck on how to narrow this down to a niche
Reply

Parenting is a great niche however broad you may want to start with an aspect of parenting to a qualified group of people who would be your target audience.

Abuse sounds like a great subject niche.

Example
Abuse prevention for teens.

In the first instance, I'd ask myself

Am I passionate and genuinely interested in my chosen niche, as I I'd be expected to write lots of content, it would motivate me to update blog with succinct original content worthy my visitors week in week out.

Would I be writing about it in a years time or two or more

Who would be my target audience, who would benefit most from what I have to offer.

I was thinking more of writing content for stay at home mums on how to just live a better life as opposed to just being stuck at home without dreams. Topics like hownto deal with an abusive partner , what to do of your child rebels instructons , ? I want them to read the content and not feel alone but most importantly I want to give them a place to sshre their thought and feelings via comments

It sounds more like relationships vs parenting which is two separate niches. The more focused your blog is starting out the better chance it has to make a success. Also knowing your target audience well is super plus, then you can address the questions they are asking adequately.

Welcome to WA.
We see you want to help women and you have listed a few ways. How about choosing one of those topics to start with. For example. Helping moms deal with abuse because even that is a broad topic. This will be challenging. Maybe you can also take advantage of many community resources available to help.

Start with a basic idea, like the sort of thing you've said above, and the niche should evolve itself. I would think there's lots of people on here who start out with one sort of niche and it moulds into something a bit different. Sites take on a life of their own
