NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

Hello all,

I am COMPLETELY green to setting up websites! I know it's easy for most, but for me..not so much. BUT, like every other challenge in my life, I WILL GET IT DONE (with your help..please?)

One question, will I be able to upload video content to this website and if so, is there a layout that's better suited for this? There are so many layouts to choose from I'm a bit overwhelmed as to which one to choose.

Thanks in advance

Hi - I would say that probably most of the members here had no experience in building a website when they first started, but the training takes you through everything step by step.

Yes, you will be able to add video to your website, no particular theme is necessary for this. Try not to add too many videos though, as they can slow your website down.
jghwebbrand Premium
Yes, you will be able to upload videos to any WordPress theme. (layout).

A great way to find answers to your questions is use the search bar at the top. Type in your search. Several suggestions will appear.

Hi, you may like view below link And don't worry we were all green at one point, we're in this together, plenty help is available whenever needed.

You can add videos to your website, but you shouldn't upload them to your website - instead, you should leverage a platform like YouTube. You want to upload them to YouTube, then *embed* them into your website - that's the best practice :)

Hi - that is covered further in the training lessons. Which affiliate program you plan to use will depend on the niche subject you have chosen as some will be more suitable than others.

As regards the content, you will be writing that yourself, everything original, nothing copied and pasted. When you apply to join an affiliate program, they will inspect your website first and expect to see lots of articles, to show that you are capable of attracting visitors.

Amazon will accept new websites, but they have the strictest rules and low commission rates. You will be expected to make 3 sales in the first 180 days, or you will be removed from their program. This is not easy to achieve until you are getting daily traffic which takes several months.

Hi, for the products to promote there's so many platforms out there like Amazon, ClickBank, Sharesale...

I'm sorry you can't make the payment. Don't you have PayPal?

You can build your free website in the meantime if you don't want to wait.

You can also contact Kyle through his profile or private message. I don't know if you can send private message as a free member tho.
jghwebbrand Premium
Do you have a PayPal account? A PayPal Account will work for upgrading your membership.

Products are found through Affiliate programs which you sign up for without any charge to you. This whole process is explained later in the training.

We wish you much success..

Hi guys,
I'm struggeling with my niche. I'm looking for a way to make money while travelling. I had a (private) blog on Polarsteps for friends and family for more than a year and received some really positive feedback on my writing, so I would like to take that to a next level. The video really focuses on advertising products. Sure enough, I bought a backpack and some outdoor clothing, but the focus is much more on my stories, photos and my experiences. How would you guys deal with this? Do I simply have to accept that the way I had it in my mind isn't how this works or are there other ways to deal with this?

Many thanks!

Hi, it may be generalized and need breaking down to a specific audience for starters, by time your site start to gain traction and authority you would then scale.

Have a look at below link You can use Jaaxy to drill down keywords, you are allowed 30 searches. Look for searches (avg.) above 30 and competition (qsr. ) lower than 100, the lower the qsr the better.

Hey Camille
The 'experiences' part of your Polarsteps blog sounds like something other readers would like to check out. They almost sound like reviews you've done on the places you've been to.

I suggest you create content and publish to your blog on a regular basis - 1-2 times a week seems to be the 'norm'.

Now, Google automatically puts new websites into what is called a 'sandbox' - while you're in here, you will get very little traffic to your site as Google runs through its ranking algorithm. This sandbox treatment last anywhere between 3-9 months and you'll start to see your visitor numbers rise as Google starts to trust your content.

Is there a way around this - no, not really; social posting and video publishing may help but it's really a right-of-passage thing - if you can stick it out then you get rewarded by the search engines in traffic flows.
I hope that helps

Interesting niche and focus, I do exploration vlogging and my passion is travel and visiting villages and small towns. May be you'd like connect, would love getting to know you guys.

I am also starting out one month in and learning the ropes.

Thanks Abie, that's an useful post. I'll give my idea some more though and will try to narrow it down. For example to only focus on the best ways (and products) to travel as lightweight as possible as my focus is on backpacking and travelling by bike. This narrows down the audience to starters already.
Cmil Premium
I'll take a look at the opportunities my reviews provide for linking to the activities or experiences I'm writing about. That could be interesting.

Luckily my motivation comes from sharing my experiences and not from reaching as many people as possible or earning money, so I'm not worried about that commitment. It's good to know that it can take a while though :)

I commend you on your input, I really like your focus and you'll do great. Kindly let us know if needing anything else, more than happy to assist.

The only other way besides affiliate marketing is selling your own products or making money off of displaying ads on your website. You usially can’t make money displaying ads on your website until you are getting a lot of traffic to your website.

If you don’t want to do full on product reviews, then maybe you can just casually link to Amazon when you mention your back pack or other item that you use? Or maybe have a link to a page that talks about your bike which in turn has a link to Amazon. This might be a little less intrusive than full on product reviews ob your website.

You can definitely do what you want to do, if you just make one mindset shift IMO.

=> Everything you want to blog about, probably has a related search term which someone is typing into Google.

Worried about traveling to a cold country and feel underprepared? People are probably searching things related to best cold weather jackets

Got caught in the rain while camping and the water soaked through your tent? People are searching for the best rainproof tents or best foul weather tents

Took a photo of a mountain? What camera? What are the pros and cons? Would you recommend it? How do you process and edit the photos? What's the best place to print them? Can you put them on a Canvas and hang it in your living room?

All of these things you're doing related to things people search for. Some have a commercial product element, some do not. The key is to write in such a way that you can get found by people using search engines.
