NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

I had to do an update on my "About Us" page which I accomplished through SiteContent (I think).

When I went to my blog to review the page, the part I updated was visible as HTML (i.e. like it had been posted with the "text" tab selected instead of "visual").

I subsequently went back and reviewed the plug-ins I'm using on my previously purchased premium theme and noticed that the "Classic Editor" Plug-In was not activated.

My question would be: Is this a feature or a bug?

Or, is it just simply an oversight by little old me?

I have since been able to update my "About Us" page without difficulty.

Hi, if you go to Settings > Writing, you can switch between classic and block editors, so you can keep your classic editor activated at all times.

The AIO plugin has been recently updated so the training will also need to be updated. You can follow the SEO wizard.

the same happened to me, is the video outdated?
Reply

Yes. The plugin was very very recently updated, So time has not allowed for the video update yet. Following the wizard is best at this point.

At this stage I'm a little uncertain. As i understand it, I have two options open to me, of which I can choose one or the other or both, which is what I want to do. I have the option of building an affiliate business around my own niche and choice of product/s,
and/or building a business via the "boot camp"training, promoting the WA program as an affiliate. Now where I need guidance Kyle, is whether or not I should attempt both options at the same time.
I somehow feel it would be unwise to attempt both at once, but if you agree with me, which option would you suggest I tackle first. If it is left to me I would favor going with the niche model first.
I await your reply. Thank you

Read your blog.
You should do only ONE website at a time. We would recommend you choose your own niche to start with. "affiliate business around my own niche" as you put it.

Doing your own niche first gives you an opportunity to become an authority site. Writing relevant unique quality content will help you to achieve that.

Hi Sherlock101, I'm new here and this has the possibility to be overwhelming. Your situation as well. Anything is possible I believe. It's all in how you do it. I think that you should do whatever your hearts desire...do all of them, keeping in mind that life is a process and take one step at a time.

Hey there, I would not suggest taking both options at once. The best idea would be to build your own niche site around your passion through Online Entrepreneur Certification to learn the basics first.

Later on, when you gather some experience with affiliate marketing, you can take Bootcamp lessons and build a site in the affiliate marketing niche.

That's what I've done and it worked well for me.

Hey all - I need some advice, please . . . I am trying to come up with my Niche . . . Would I be better off doing "60 is the new 40 for women" or "What Grandparenting looks like in 2021" (wording needs to be changed but those are the general ideas) I am 59, divorced, single mom of 3 daughters and grandmother of 5 and one on the way. I love being a grandmother. Its so much better than being a mom! LOL! Also, I am struggling with the whole turning 60 thing. How is that possible, when I'm not even what I want to be when I grow up! I feel much younger (I guess that's a good thing).

I've written some content for a blog I was hoping to start, with the title, "It's never to late to start over" but I didn't know how to turn that into a money maker.

SUGGESTIONS? I'm open to anything!!! A completely different road, even. Thank you!! I'm in Southern California so I'm going to bed soon, but will hope to see suggestions in the morning! Thanks so much!

I like the grandparent thing; but, I would try to avoid putting a year to it. I would think you want it to be successful for many years to come.

There's no right or wrong choice here. If you're passionate about both topics, and you clearly are, one of them should be your niche. All you have to do is decide on one of those two topics and like Unamaa said in his comment, put a whole year to it.

To help you get over with this dilemma, I would suggest you ask yourself this. Would I like to help people to be better grandparents or women in their 60es to feel younger? How can I help any of those two groups of people?

In any case, just make a quick decision, like ripping off a bandaid. Once you build a successful business in one of those two niches, you can easily invest extra time and money into a second one. So it's a win-win situation whichever the way you go :)

I hope this helps :)
