NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any questions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you want to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

Does my website have to target only one niche or can I create a general store with different products and links (sell related products to different interest groups) to maximize my earnings? For example, am thinking about getting into fashion (both men and women) and children's toys. Can I pull this off on one site or I would have to create different sites and promote them differently?

That might be a little to broad.. it's best to pick something specific about fashion (like dress shoes).

Thanks for quick response, much appreciated. Am persuaded that as I acquire more knowledge from you and many other kind hearted folks here at WA, it will become clearer to me how to approach my website.

There are too many ideas here.
A niche is something you feel super excited to write about, a skill you have attained, something that resonates with you. You will want to be focused on one niche. What is it that you want to help a group of people with or what problem do you want to help them solve (group could be age, gender, location, experience level, degree or type of need, etc.)

'i want to help ____(group) with ______(problem)'
Focus on one idea and one group of people to start your site with.
Say you are interested in children's toys.
A narrower focus to start could be Children's toys to improve motor skills

Why should you narrow your niche when first starting?
The key to getting started fast is to narrow your niche down to a specific topic. This way, you will eliminate a lot of competition and get results much faster.
Niche examples
Camping essentials for beginners as a niche subject Computer essentials for beginners. Strength training for women over 40. I help women over 50 lose weight with yoga, help new Moms find the most important baby gear to cope with their first year as a parent

How To Find Your Passion Once you site is established and receiving a good volume of traffic you can expand your niche scope.

Wow! Thanks for the insightful response, it clearly shows that you know what you are talking about. You have unpacked it nicely for me. Am beginning to understand the power of a niche for an online business. If I don't focus on one particular niche, it's easy to get overwhelmed and lose focus as there are simply too many options out there.

That is a great idea; you may have to ask other Members for help on this. But, in Wordpress. Look up WooCommerce. I think that is it; in Add Ons in Wordpress; just try that. And WooCommerce is an Online Store Plug In.

Hope this helps and encourages?

Hi

You'd see them middle or left corner bottom, you may have ad blocker on the specific browser you are trying to watch, you may want to try a different browser.

So, I have a couple ideas for niches that I would like to work with. Ultimately, I would love to be an affiliate for EagleMoss Collectibles. I have a passion for building their cars and was wondering if they offer affiliate marketing. They are my endgame. To start though, I was thinking something smaller, like action figures through Amazon.

I am just going to say this; try this in Google; and go up to Page 5 for this. Try Affiliate Program + and your subject. Try that in Google.

I will say too; if you want? Try Affiliate Program + in Google.

Go up to Page 5 at least in Google.

Hope this helps and encourages?

Hi - yes, they do have an affiliate program. However, it is not recommended that you choose a niche based on the assumption that you will be approved to join their program. If you are turned down, then you will be stuck.

You may want to check amazon,. I noticed they saell EagleMoss Collectibles and after you get 15 - 20 posts on your website you could apply to their affiliate program too if you choose.

Hi, I'm following Level 1 training for Online Entrepreneur Certification and currently on Lesson 5.
I'm building my first website and I think I made a mistake when going through the website back office causing I can't open them after that.
I was trying to change my website name in the settings from catamazinglife to catamazingcomfortlife. After I did it, I cannot access my website back office.
I'm sorry for my mistake but hopefully, you could help me with this.

Thank you so much.

I would suggest you contact Support, and Carson's team.

Thank you for all your help. I just realized there is a 'delete this website' button on the bottom of the detail page of the site manager. I just click on there and remake my website. I'm sorry for the silly mistake and thanks for your help. :)

Hi - as you have found, you can't change the domain name of your website, so deleting it was the only action you could have taken.

I've been struggling with this niche concept for a long time, I'm not really passionate in any profitable concepts. However I think I have narrowed it down to pop culture/Science fiction or history. Those are two subjects that I am interested in and would be able to engage in. From a little research I think the former of the two has the most potential and could be narrowed down.

Very open to advice or suggestions.

Hi, Drayl: Supposing you were to decide on pop culture as a niche . . . . You could possibly talk about "fads" or "crazes" people went nuts over, say, 40 or 50 years ago . . . things people collected ( maybe baseball bubble gum cards ) Well --- from there you would write posts about where to find these things though they're rather outdated . . . you could discuss why they were so popular and inform those who visit your site about where to find them NOW should there be stores or little memorabilia places in different cities , etc. . . . That could be a way to "get rolling" toward the direction you were pondering over. Good luck!

I am just going to say; if you want to have more than one Niche; and more than one .com that is fine. It will take more work and time. But, you can have more than one Niche and .com if you want? It will just take more time, money and effort.

Hope this helps and encourages?
