Niches...this is the scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it is rather exciting!

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, a problem, a need or a want. Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online. Watch the video below...

DISCUSS THIS VIDEO HERE:
Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche
!

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The more you enjoy doing something the less it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

But Really, a Niche is a Group of People

In the simplest form, a niche is really a group of people looking for stuff. When you select your niche, you want to avoid being too broad with your niche selection. What people fail to understand is the fact that there are millions of people looking for stuff online within what seems to be the smallest of niches, but they really are not.

Because of this, I have spent some time putting together a blog post outlining how you should approach your niche selection, how to avoid going too broad with your niche, and how to really narrow it down to a group of people that are more specific and targeted.

READ BLOG POST: A Niche is a Group of People Looking for New Stuff

I provide you with some real life examples of how to break down a broad niche into more specific groups. There is also a very active discussion there if you have any questions about your particular niche or you want to join in the on the conversation. ;)

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited. You can either choose your own niche at this point or you can choose the "make money" niche (that should be your choice if you have no idea what niche to choose).

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You need to enjoy helping people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any niche can become a "full time" successful business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that niches can always change. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the "make money" niche.

If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate. Go here if that is you.

For the Privacy Policy page, my options to NOT have this page indexed are different than the video. I only have the following two options:

Robots Meta NOINDEX - Same as video
Robots Meta NOFOLLOW - Same as video

Is there anything I am missing? There a 4 check boxes in the video.

I am missing:

Robots Meta NOODP
Robots Meta NOYDIR

When I was doing this part, I also only had the NOINDEX and NOFOLLOW, so I only checked those two boxes. I was thinking that maybe the NOODP and NOYDIR was from a previous version of the plugin, that's why it's not there now.

Hey everyone! I am definitely interested in promoting WA as well as work from home opportunities in general, possibly targeted towards women entrepreneurship specifically. I know it is a competitive space as my FB feed is full of ads from people promoting their own training, webinars communities. Is this a niche that may be very difficult to break into due to the competition?
Reply
ericcantu Premium
The good thing about promoting WA even with a large number of competitors out there pushing their own product is, because of this, think of the almost limitless number of review articles you'll be able to publish and share where you compare the WA opportunity to other ones.

When you compare and leverage the opportunities in a way that shows WA to be the better one in your opinion, you create a great opportunity for someone to follow your direction and join WA.

Especially with the fact that you're targeting women I think you'll do just fine.

Enroll into the WA Bootcamp and follow that training! Good luck!

I really don't have any interest in anything as far as coming up with for a "niche" can't I just do a search on what people are searching for or interested in at the time that seems be a popular. and go from that to help determine a direction in what to choose from and go from there?

Hey there!

You can decide on a topic however you want to find it. It will still be a 'niche' because it will be on a certain topic area :) I mean, you don't want a site that's about ice cream and car motors. Or celeb gossip and science. You know?

How that helps :)

I'm sure that if you think about it for a bit, you can come up with something that interests you.

You mention in your profile that you are not a materialistic person and would prefer to be able to do without money. That's actually pretty great both from a personal point of view and also in regards to WA. You will likely find that the people who are doing very well here are those who are following a passion or doing this to help others. You will hear "help, don't sell" several times throughout the training.

I noticed on your profile page that you mentioned catching 12 fish last week. There's a potential niche for you: fishing gear. Or maybe camping/ outdoor gear.

If you can find something that appeals to you and that you have some knowledge about, you can effectively share that information with others. If, for example, you love fishing and can help people find the best fishing gear, then they might buy those items through your site. That's what it's all about: people want to buy stuff and you help them decide what good and point out where to get it.

Quick question;

Kyle said to select the Robots Meta so the privacy page doesn't get indexed.
- Robots Meta NOINDEX
- Robots Meta NOFOLLOW
- Robots Meta NOODP
- Robots Meta NOTDIR

Of course I have a different theme and it reads like this:
- Robots Meta NOINDEX
- Robots Meta NOFOLLOW
Which I have the selected but I have two more that are different
- Exclude From Sitemap
- Disable on this page/post

I did not select these two. Should I have them selected?

Your input is greatly appreciated

I only know that since the last All In One Seo Update (a few weeks ago) Robots Meta NOODP and Robots Meta NOTDIR are not showing up anymore...
So, first we had to check four boxes, now only the first two... Not sure about the other two you mentioned, I see only Disable on this page/post under my posts...

What is some advice for someone who is a little timid about starting a website... I'm kinda overwhelmed. The niche I'd like to go into is Business Fashion, a kinda 'How to Look Professional' website, but i don't know how to begin. Like staring at a blank page, but not knowing what to write..

It's okay if you feel overwhelmed. Everyone does at some point. I felt stuck and changed my website platform three times! You know your topic, for your first page just think about introducing yourself, then what lead you to this niche. Why do you want to create this page? Why did you choose this niche? Have confidence in yourself and know that you can do this and pages can be deleted. I deleted one yesterday. You've got this! All the best,
Keli

Best advice is DON'T be timid. It's scary and very overwhelming at first for all of us. I'm 16 days new. And in that 16 days I've hyperventilated, said I'm not going to be successful, deleted and deleted again webpages, stopped working on a webpage because I read too much information and didn't know what to add to my page, etc, etc. Yesterday I said to hell with it posted my page and got 2 sales immediately. My site still needs work so I'll be updating as often as I can. Just put something on the page.

Business Fashion, what arenas are you focusing on? The Executive Corporate side, the Individual Business Owner side, Shabby Chic or combo of Exec and Shabby? What do you like about Business Fashion? Pants or Skirt Suits for women? You can change everything before you publish and even after you publish it. YOU control it. It's your baby.

So stop being timid and gets a working, lol. Good Luck

I guess this is where I'm going to have to "pause", on this today.
I have so many idea's, but of course I'm going to have to follow something I have a greater knowlage about.
I mean I understand it as, it would be best to appeal to the broadest of audiance IE. MAKE LOT'S OF MONEY ON MY WEBSITE!", but if I was an expert on that,, I wouldn't be here, Maybe?.. lol Be back later guys..
Enjoy your day. =)

Keep up with the training just as you're doing and you'll get a better feel for everything :) While it's good to reach out to a large audience (we all want major traffic, right?) it's also important not to go into *too* broad of a niche that has so much competition that you're lost in the crowd.

Kyle will explain everything and cover the right types of niches that are most profitable. Keep up with the training and you'll be well on your way :)

Thank you for this Kyle. However, how different can the domain name be from the key word? For example can I use a domain name lets say my domain name is "affiliatesuccess"; then my key words I go for something like: 1. "Success in online business" or something like "How to make money online"?
Reply

Your domain ultimately comes down to you. The more relevant your domain to your site the better. Your domain is just the domain. You can rename your site under site identity all you want.

Thank you very much, that is helpful to me.

Many of us think in terms of brand name rather than exact match domains. For example My site is Fire My Boss. It doesn't mater that it's different than the keywords I target.

A quick one, what if I already built a site (WP) which I self-host? I am happy with the site etc. I just need to add content and get it active. Can I do that? It is one site, I have two others as well which I can re-do here if need be.

No problem, however I have I have just moved all my sites to WA and am saving the hosting fee on the third party.

Mark
Reply
cornevanzyl Premium
OK brilliant, so that is possible as I like my WP framework (STUDIOPRESS) and theme that I have. Which means that you use WA as a host. Is this correct?
Reply
NeBro Premium
Hi, as Mark says you can do that.

What you learn at WA is how to monetize your site, it matters not where it is or whether it is on WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, good old HTML/CSS/JS or other weird and wonderful base, and to a large extent, it matters not where it is hosted, now how it is hosted or on what platform.

What you learn here can be applied to almost any web based business and site as you are learning, to a large extent, internet and affiliate marketing.

If the other sites you mention are in WordPress you can export the content and import them into a new WordPress site here at WA. Sometimes it is better to just start out again though, it all depends on what you have currently and how you plan on using it.

You can use any theme too, WA is not a fixed platform, in the respect your are limited to the themes on offer and are blocked from using anything else, it is a regular style host, that just happens to be primed for WordPress, so the WordPress installation you get is a regular WordPress installation and you can modify it as such, so you can use a StudioPress theme if you like.

If you have domain names you wish to use, then you can point them at WA Site Hosting or transfer them into WA Site Domains/Site Hosting and use the hosting included with your premium plan, which could cut down on some of your costs.

Of course, as we have already mentioned, you can also keep everything as it is, and just learn your IM/AM stuff here and apply it to your sites as you like.

Best wishes

Neil

Alot of niches that I would love to do, trying to be more specific uhmm is abit hard ...niche: health / subs: cancer-diabetes-heartprobs-obesity weightlost- / sub subs: natural remedies or treatments or supplements or DIY .. health is such a huge niche, is it ok to have a few others to address some health problems and possible treatments - any thoughts on this - main reason is to bring about more awareness that you can help yourself ... chemo or other medical treatments is not always the answer ... or should I go with something more simple like: ie: fidget gadget de-stresser ...

If you head in the health direction, you would definitely want to narrow things down. Are you helping people with back problems, foot fungus, arterial issues, balding, etc.

There are 1,000's of directions that you could head there and you would want to narrow it down.

How much content is too little or too much content? I personally am a person of few words, I like things short, straight forward and to the point. If I go to a website and there is too much content I simply scan for what I need and don't read the rest especially if it's not relevant or should I say if I don't find it relevant. There can be too much fluff on a page.
Reply
MarkPerkins Premium
Couldn't agree more about too many words. Trouble is Google likes us to have at least 300 words I think, I was always told 500 min but I don't like going over 800.

Again it is all about layout that also keeps a visitor interested.

So many different versions on this. Def. must be over 500 words and better to be closer to 1500+ Personally I don't like really long posts unless it is really captivating information BUT google apparently does! :) If you can aim for 700-1000 you should be in a safe range. If it is a review you will find yourself easily over the 1000 word range.

Dang it Google. Thanks.
Reply
ericcantu Premium
Like everyone else said, it needs to be above 300, probably closer to 500 or 600. When someone clicks over to a page and all they see are a few paragraphs of copy, most feel that it isn't an authority post, know what I mean?

Now you don't want a wall of text either. So breaking up the paragraphs into a couple of sentences each is the way to go. Plenty of white space and well placed images to break up the text.

As you write out the content just type it as if you were in conversation and you'll find before you know it you're at 600 and even 800.

Google likes it when users go to your page and stay awhile. It shows a good user experience and that's what gets your site ranking :)

You can do it! (just don't do what I did in school and have a last sentence that says, "I hope you've enjoyed this report very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very much" just to get to the desired word count, lol.

Damn so I have to find intriguing fluff to extend page 2 & 3 of my site. I used to love to write, wrote short stories and worked for a newspaper in high school and college writing and editing articles. Now it just seems annoying. Must dig deep to resurface the writer in me.

And no, I'd chose a different ending, lol

Hi
I have just watched the choose your niche training, my question is why wouldn't you research a niche that is very high paying and go in that direction? ( I did a bit of googling and found like what seem like great ideas, not really of too much interest to me but I could research to know enough right? )
Reply
MarkPerkins Premium
Yes you could research. However... If you are just starting out it is, in my opinion, far better to work in a niche you are comfortable with and already knowledgeable in. You have a lot of posts to write and adding heaps of research will slow you down.

Quite often the high paying niches are very competitive and you need to gain a lot of experience to tackle them.

My comments for what they are worth.

Mark
Reply
MsMerry Premium
I think you might be able to do both. The whole concept of being totally passionate about something is not always enough. Sometimes the niche we are passionate about is very competitive and that makes it difficult.
Mark has a point but research even in a niche we love is still important. More so for reviews.

You can do any niche you like.. it is about your passion here. You will want to continue to write content on the website. If it isn't your passion or hobby you might not persist and continue to write any content, am i right? So do any kinda website you like with the niche you're passionate on. After that post on the website, i might want to see your music making service. :)

You could do one site for your audio business, and one for affiliate stuff, or do them together. It depends on what your audio affiliate niche is, plus what your audio services niche is. If they are the same, then it works. If not, then you should make separate sites.

For example, if your site is about the best headphones for dj mixing, that wouldn't fit with voice over services. An affiilate site on "how to book your first gig as a DJ" would not fit well with a a corporate audio engineer services website.

Once I build my website, I will probably affiliate with WA. I have been watching hours and hours of video's trying to convince to pay for the privilege to work. I just kept thinking "If you earn 6 figures doing this, why do you want my $47?" I think it would be awesome to help others who are going through the same thing to find something like we have found.

It's a business just like everything else. Just because Verizon & AT&T pull in over 6 figures a year, should everyone get free phone services?
A membership here is not a "right", it is a service just like everything else. With a premium membership you get 25 free websites, access to 5 10-level courses, a SSL security certificate for all of your websites, 24/7 tech support, community help at your fingertips, additional training modules that come out weekly, and more. If you were to try and get those things on your own in another way, as a beginner, I guarantee you would end up paying much more than that $47.
This is legitimate "training".. and in that sense, you should really look at it as tuition of sorts. Where can you go to school for an internet marketing / affiliate marketing course that is going to cost you $47? Nowhere. And I guarantee the value that you get in the ability to have access to this community full of top performers in the marketing industry beats any class you could attend in one semester's time. Nothing in life is free. Think about what it is you're really asking :)

I take it I use that exact wording i.e. " small business marketing consultants "...in beauty .... as opposed to "small beauty business marketing consultants"?

Hi, I was doing IM about 8 years ago. I was affiliated with The Keyword Academy to name one. Back then it was also all about keyword research, SEO, etc... Then Google updated their algorithm and made all of that obsolete. True content became the King. Organic search and the quality of content was the way to get ranked. Lots and lots of sites where pushed waaaay down the search results and some even de-indexed. So, what changed to justify doing the same thing all over again today? What makes WA different? Don't get me wrong, I want to believe. But before sinking more time and money into this, I want to know what to expect the second time around :)

Glad you are finding the themes you like. I went through something similar, but I had already added several pages of content, and it was kind of a mess in terms of images and paragraph placements. In the end for me it wasn't worth it to have to go back and make a thousand little adjustments. Customizing is one thing, but re-tooling everything was something else!

I understand this is just an exercise to walk me through the process of building a website and its content. If you have more than one website - I am curious as to how having an about me page and a photograph of you on each site comes across... Do all affiliate sites need to have an about me page and a photograph of you on them?
Reply
Matstabler Premium
In my opinion, its about trust.A photo and backstory adds some creedence to why they should trust your opinions and reviews and so to click on your links now and potentially in the future.

Well, I look at it like this, right now I'm building my first site on the transition to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. So my about me is about that part of my life. In the future I plan to build a site about removing the stigma associated with mental illness, that will have a very different about me. We are all related in that we are human, but we are all also so many other things! Try to look at it that way :)

Simple answer is YES.

The purpose of an affiliate site is to MAKE MONEY. Like you and I, we need to trust who we are buying from. So I feel it is important to have an about page, to install trust in your future customer.

Each website is unrelated to the next, so YES an about page on each site.

This keyword search thing is a little puzzling. Not sure if I am doing it right. Anyone else has any issues out there? I just have 8 more tasks to go with this course, but still feel a little uneasy with the keyword search thing. Just want to make sure I am doing it correctly.

Hey there Courtney, You are not alone! Keywords are how you target your audience. It may help to think about the last time you searched for something. If I was looking to buy something but wanted opinions first, I would search something like "product x review" or "is product x any good" etc so if you were reviewing a product for your site, you could target "Product x review".

The keyword tool is there to help you find a low competition phrase to target in your pages so that when your page goes live, it could appear in search results, be clicked and hopefully lead to a sale.

Hope that helps.

Hi, I've just been a few minutes here, hello everybody, sorry for not having a profile yet :) I hope you're doing fine and that this system gives you what you are looking for. I see now that I have a 7 days limit, limit to what? I guess I need to be told somehow. For me the ideal system would be one in which I can start for free and generate money to be able pay for the help the gave me to do it. Months ago it wouldn't be a problem for me to spend whatever it needs but for my kind of situation I think there does not exist system that allows you to get results for free. If one could think really from the angle of the member that's the way they should do it and I'm sure it's possible. Nothing is impossible but on needs to want it first. But each time I end up with a fee to pay to get started and the passion ends up there. Please prove me wrong!

You get the first ten lessons for free along with complete access for one week. That's basically for you to be sure that this is something you would like to do and that it can be done here.

You can stay a free member but you will not be able to continue with the lessons (100's of them) and you also lose access to the community.

The first month is $19. For the training and platform that is offered here it's a steal. Granted $19 can be a lot of money at times.

But keep in mind that what you see here takes money to keep going. WA has expenses and a staff to pay. Bottom line is in addition to all that WA is it's also a business.

You want to start a business to make money and at some point your website will have to sell something and produce money to stay in business and so does WA.

If you can not get the $19. stay a free member and WA will continue to host your website free. We all have obstacles to overcome and it looks like you do too.

If you want to make money online badly enough just don't give up.

Good luck.

Hi Sabrina
You are right; there is nothing for free in life. We must pay either with our own time, which is costly, or currency.
Although we would like Affiliate Marketing to be an opportunity to overnight riches it is not.

Affiliate Marketing requires focus, time, dedication and discipline. ROI depends on knowledge level, of web building, marketing and the factors mentioned above.

Here, in WA we have the opportunity to learn through the lessons and the support from the community.

Wishing you the best

Awesome tutorial video, normally it is really easy to get confused but with kyle going over the website in these videos button for button really helped me catch on to everything. Even thought some of the tips he was giving were pretty obvious still helpful to those new user's out there who are just not familiar with the internet. GREAT VIDEOS!

1. Never received answers to my 3 questions
2. A window popped up from Paul to whom I had responded initially but would not open so could only read part of a line.
3. THAT is why I use this new thing called a Telephone and if I can get going with this thing, I will service my people by phone if requested!

I'm kind if simple minded and am already confused:

1. When I chose a username, it rejected it, and as I was entering a new on, and was not finished, it jumped me into this site.
2. I then clicked on get started (green box on left) and it did nothing.
3. I scrolled down and it asked for a title but didn't target whee they wanted it typed in
4. Next, I'm here and can barely read the small image of the screen above....tried to go full page but it didn;t work out.

That sounds like to me what I am having with my brother's laptop and you might be having it with yours. It sounds like a program issue that you might want to have your Tech guys look into if Kyle doesn't have any problems with his end. I am having program glitches on my laptop that I have had to learn till I earn enough to make due with what I have here with my laptop to get my full web page with all the many content up and running and ready for SEO.

John...

I assume you mean username for WA? What did it come out as then, as you say it jumped you into here? Check on your profile pic > Account Settings and it will show you your username and other things. It may be the name was already in use...

What Operating system and browser are you using, are you on Pc/Laptop/Tab/Mobile??? Some will have certain link types disabled.

With not being able to see/read. you increase the browser zoom, usually CTRL and + or - on Win or Command and + or - or Mac.

All modern browsers and desktops can do this, just set it to whatever suits your eyes, if the CTRL function above does not work them just google 'how to increase browser zoom' and add your browser to the search, so stick chrome, opera, safari or whatever on the end.

Regards

Neil

I do not know how to upload an image. At my age there is not much of any interest in y life without money to even by my needs.
Will I have to have a drop shipper and sell things? I need an interest that young people are interested in. Games to play on line or order on line?? I need suggestions! Do I have to have an image right away? I was thinking of my last pet a German shepherd.

Give this a look. It's a good course of action. I don't know if you are young or old but you sound like a young person to me.

As you get older you may find that once your needs are met money is not that important.

Good luck my friend. Always here to help as we all are.

are you a premium member(?) enrolling and having access to live courses would answer some of your above questions; you could also google search your questions. WA is geared toward paying membership and earning income through their affiliate and/or through third party affiliate programs they cover in their live class presentations.

Good night all (It's about 11:55 PM in Jamaica).
I recently upgraded to the premium membership and got an offer for a live training course, I assume this to be one of the many benefits of the membership, however, my question is, ifI'm not able to take part in a live training session for whatever reason how do I go about being able to see past sessions?
Also in the case for opting into a training session that has multiple parts to it - if you're not strating at the beginning becuase it came up as an offer where would you find the beginning of the training?
Reply

Hi, Jerome.

The easiest way to find recordings of the live trainings is to look to the left of any page on WA. Under the category: "Training," you'll see the image of a video camera, followed by the words: "Live Video Classes." That's a link to all the recordings.

Here's the direct link: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/webinar

Where would promoting WA fit into "finding a niche" ?
terrific product, and recurring commission. On the other side - being new to this website, not sure how much I could talk about it authoritatively without repeating how good it is.
And what material (if any), could I use from the site in my website/marketing without infringing on anyone's content ?

Interesting Question.
I wouldn't have chosen it as a niche right off without any internet marketing experience and I still haven't.

However, the more I get involved on WA the more I realise I may be able to help new affiliate marketers and am seriously looking at perusing a niche in WA.

I know it doesn't answer you question directly. I guess my question is how long have you been seeking an income from the internet?
Reply
Probably about 2-3 years. But I've always been looking for other streams of income for many years and suffered lots of failures.

I guess fundamentally I'm a big anti - believer in J-O-B. and have had recent experiences over the last 10 years of losing mega amounts of money that has led me to realise that the only way I can make things back, and provide for my family to give them a better life, is by creating streams of passive income. The challenge, as you know, is picking the tropical fish out of the shark's pool.

In the last 10 months, I've spent an aweful lot of money on a certain Affiliate marketing company, and got nothing back.

One thing that's true about what they say - and it is said by many successful people, you learn by your mistakes ....... so I think I have my Master's Degree in Hindesight now.....

Thanks for replying.......

Malcolm,
I've been longer than that. In hindsight... (that delightful phrase) I have just not been patient enough. I have obviously learnt a lot, and spend a lot, as I am wizzing through the lessons.
A niche didn't produce results fast enough so I'd move to the next etc etc.

I must have matured as I am now making myself be patient. lol

How much does a membership cost also how much is the premium membership? Please don't tell me to go to the bottom of the page. The bottom of the page is probably 2 hours away. Very interesting... I just joined WA today. The way i found this site was through googling about social media marketing (makes so much sense how I was led here lol). I am looking to expand my knowledge in social media marketing, specifically helping local gyms and bands expand their social media presence. I am just wondering if this site could assist me in that goal? If so, great. If not, what are some recommendations for my goal? Thanks
