Niches...this is the scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it is rather exciting!

What is a niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, a problem, a need or a want. Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online. Watch the video below...

DISCUSS THIS VIDEO HERE:
Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche
!

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The more you enjoy doing something the less it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

But Really, a Niche is a Group of People

In the simplest form, a niche is really a group of people looking for stuff. When you select your niche, you want to avoid being too broad with your niche selection. What people fail to understand is the fact that there are millions of people looking for stuff online within what seems to be the smallest of niches, but they really are not.

Because of this, I have spent some time putting together a blog post outlining how you should approach your niche selection, how to avoid going too broad with your niche, and how to really narrow it down to a group of people that are more specific and targeted.

READ BLOG POST: A Niche is a Group of People Looking for New Stuff

I provide you with some real life examples of how to break down a broad niche into more specific groups. There is also a very active discussion there if you have any questions about your particular niche or you want to join in the on the conversation. ;)

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited. You can either choose your own niche at this point or you can choose the "make money" niche (that should be your choice if you have no idea what niche to choose).

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You need to enjoy helping people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any niche can become a "full time" successful business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that niches can always change. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the "make money" niche.

If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate. Go here if that is you.

I was just wondering, if we start our website using the free siterubix domain are we stuck with the free site or can we transfer the content to a hosted domain at a later date?

Yes you can move your free SiteRubix site to a domain name hosted here at SiteHosting once you have purchased your name.

Or at your chosen hosting provider, though this will be more involved for you, such as having to move your content, database etc...and also mod the database as the URLs in the db will still have yourname.siterubix.com in them...so won't work properly...

Post back if you have more Qs

Best wishes

Thanks for the response Neil. So will I have to know HTML coding for me to be able to transfer the site or is it just a case of moving everything over and having all links directed towards the new domain and host server/DNS?

Hi Adam, no this is a different thing, you won't need to do any coding these are generally SysAdmin tasks...

I do not know if you have access to the Databases here or not, as I don't host my sites here...

There are a couple of ways of going about it, some more involved than others. I will give you a brief/shallow outline.

If you want an absolutely exact copy you will require a copy of your database and you will need to modify any of the URLs in there that read, somename.siterubix.com to yourownname.com. Either prior to moving or as one of the first jobs at your source hosting.

You can do this a number of ways, it depends on whether you have access to the DB here at siterubix or not which will dictate your migration path.

Once you have a copy of said DB (cleaned prior to moving is preferable but not essential) you need to either create a source DB or have your exported SQL file, use a create database statement...again we don't rally want to get into the heavy details here.

Once you have your source DB up and running and cleaned, and have made sure that at least your most important URL's 'Site Address' and 'WordPress Address' are correct, you can go about moving your site.

The easiest way, use FTP or SFTP, download your entire site files, this includes all of your themes, plugins, uploads etc, and then upload them to the new host. Alternatively, you can export from WP but remember, this export will include the old paths in the DB in some of the content so will need cleaning at the other end.

Once in place, you will need to modify the wp-config file and give the address/name. login name and password of the new database, (DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD and DB_HOST) otherwise WP won't be able to find or log in to your new WP database.

Once inside you can clean up a bit, but most of it should be there and you can scan the DB for old paths using things like SearchAndReplace...

Alternatively, you can create a new site, export your content from your old wordpress and import it into your new site, you will be let with a DB that requires no additional cleaning but you will have to make sure that you install all of your used themes and plugins again and though some will/may pickup settings, others will not so you will have to manually redo them.

Or, you can host your site here...it makes life a bit easier if you are not confident about moving your stuff and don't really want to create a new site and start again, you can just move from SR to SiteHosting using your own domain name.

Best wishes

Thank you Neil for the detailed response, it has made things more clear for me. I think I'll stick to working within the free domains at first and transfer to my own domain at a later date.

Again thank you for the help, It is greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Adam

Hi all..am I right in thinking I have unlimited attempts to create a website for free until i get it right?
Reply
NeBro Premium Top 200
Yes, but, you can only have 2 in existence at one time if you are not a premium member, or 25 if you are a premium member.

So you will have to delete one to make a new one or you could just reset WordPress and start over with the same name if this is what you wanted...

Just remember the 'free' ones are subdomains on siterubix, and yes very useful to practice with.

Check here... it may help.

Best wishes

Hi Josh,
Every Affiliate program is different as to how much they pay in commissions. Whenever you are looking to join an Affiliate program, it is best to read their terms. All of them give you a detailed description of how much they pay out. I have seen some as little as 4% and some as great as 50%. You have to do your research.
I hope this helps.
