NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

So i just checked out the "move" button in site manager and it looks like I can't move my site to the domain name that own through Google. What are my options here? Do I need to cancel my domain with Google and re-buy it here? Or should I redirect my google .com domain to a different site, a .org for example? I assume that might mess up my ranking though? Really need some help with this ASAP. Thanks

That would be a good one to pass along to site support. They might be able to provide options.

Hello everyone!

I want the "About Me" and "Privacy Policy" to be under different menu and to be down on the Sub Footer, and the "Home" button to be on the top.
Can you please let me know if there is a way to create different menu for those two ?

Yes, you can do that within your Wordpress dasboard under Menus feature. Create two menus one for top and another for footer and asign each menu its position.

I don't think it is possible to separate a menu. But if you want try you can go to Appearance>Menus then go to Appearance>Widgets. My experience tells me it is difficult to separate a menu unless you code a solution...but you are welcome to try.

The ability to have a secondary navigation menu may be dependent on the theme you are using. The first theme I used did not allow this however the second one (generate press) I installed did.

You can do this through your dashboard-menus. Note:- not all themes allow footer menus, if yours does then it will give you an option to create a footer menu.

Trust this helps :)

Hi Kyle,

You made mention of free domains, your own domain, and registering your own domain in this lesson (L4); I think I understand the free part but firstly what is a domain and what is an 'own domain' as opposed to 'registering your own domain' and what are the cost implications?

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Reeves

In simple terms, A domain is a URL. in WA there are two domains, Free and paid.
Free domains are nothing but the free subdomain on siterubix domain in WA. For e.g. reeves.siterubix.com can be a free domain. You need to create reeves subdomain on siterubix and then reeves.siterubix.com becomes a new domain which is free. You don't have to pay anything for creating this domain in WA.

On other hand if you want your URL to be reeves.com then you need to purchase it from the various domain providers such as godaddy, bigrock and all. You can also purchase it within WA too.

If you purchase it outside it becomes expensive and can cost anywhere upto 100-150 per year. If you purchase it within WA then you get all feature inclusive domain for just $15 approximately.

just finished lesson two, and came up with an idea for a niche, which I am very excited about. Last evening I was concerned that I could never find a niche that anyone would be interested in, and that this venture would turn out to be a failure. I'm glad I stuck with it. Truly glad

Hello everyone! I still have questions on the niche. Not sure why this still confuses me, but hopefully someone can help.

My niche has to do with healing your heart through journaling after a toxic relationship. Do I need to specifically state what my niche is on the About Me article on my website? Or should my articles give away my niche?

Also, in the articles I’ve written, I’ll write about a specific topic like finding the root cause of your pain, and include some questions to ask yourself. The goal is to encourage my readers to journal after they’ve read the article.

I’m just not sure if this is a specific enough niche...or if I should leave the journaling part out and just have my site be about how to heal your heart after a toxic relationship, then provide a bunch of different ways to do so. Or should I focus on journaling right now and then later I can continue to branch out...?

Just needing some help and guidance as I stay in my head a lot. Hope this makes sense. Thanks!

Hi Kionna,
Well both actually. It would help in your about me to say something about your website, what it intends to do, more anbout how you are intending to help your target audience which is your niche,

A niche is a market segment in your case people who have had a bad experience in relationships and require to have their heart healed so really you are providing service but in the world of today a product and service are the same

The content you write is about what you think will get your audience engaged. So if you think that your audience would be happy to engage in answering questions then go for it you are doing the research so in the best position to answer that question.

As for whether to journal or not right now or provide them with how they can heal so do I take it that is how you plan to monetize? That is you are going to sell these people information to heal themselves.? you can for example use the journal to start to get them to know where the are within themselves in order to select the products or services that you give them as a choice to buy...

So you see how you go is dependent on the strategy or plan you are using to do business with your audience which only you as the website owner and boss can decide.

I believe Ramco has said what is true. Close your eyes and concentrate on how you wish to target your audience. You can create your own journal of what you see to be helpful to others. That will be what you develop in the research and understanding of how you will write your posts on your website. Search the keywords as you continue your training. That is all covered in the training. Peace, Mark.

Hi Ramco! Thank you so much. This finally clicked for me. When you wrote, “ The content you write is about what you think will get your audience engaged,” that’s what really helped everything make sense. And yes, journals, books, and courses that I’ve used are what I plan to use to monetize.

But I have a much clearer understanding now. I should’ve posted my question sooner because I’ve been stuck in my head for a while. Thanks for the help!
