NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

So I finished up my website and I’m on lesson six. I just noticed on a Google search about two or three pages into the search results that there is a .com website with the same name as mine. Is there a way I can go about changing my name as I still have a good idea that’s close to the same?

Once we have registered a domain name, the URL can't be changed. However, we can still change our website title. We can change it in the General Setting of our WP Dashboard.

Hi Timothy! Usually you will be informed if there is already an owner of the domain name you have applied or tried to register.

However, using a domain name or website with the same name or very similar to existing one/s, this may result in legal issues such as trademark infringement.

When it is already registered you need to deal with the person who has the same domain name if he is the one who have registered first.- maybe you can buy the same from him or you can sell to him yours.

By all means avoid getting embroiled in legal violations.

Be careful,

Great advice and I agree. I think they have the .com domain and mine is through the siterubix but I still don't want the similarity. That's bad business to me.
Thanks for the help!

For the time being I had focused my direction on social gadgets that may include all cellphones, laptops, monitors, CPU`s,keyboards, head set, earphones and some minor items related to my niche. I want to see how it goes, and maybe later I may develop for another one as my second niche.

Here goes my first question!

I am trying to really narrow down my niche and I was wondering if anyone is able to help me out at all. When I think of what interests me these are the words I come up with.

Environmentally aware
Slow consumerism
beauty
ethical
healthy
natural
travel
women entrepreneurs
animals
babies
motherhood
alternative therapies

I'm not sure how to narrow these down effectively. Any help is appreciated!

Hello,

Choosing a niche is a big step. You've got broad ones on your list.

A Niche should be specific, evergreen, profitable, a solution to a problem, and most importantly a passion you can live for.

What is it you are so passionate about? Something that you can turn into a lot of content that will fill your website with and attract visitors to your site.

Specific: Who is your targeted segment? Who will benefit from your site? Gender, age, occupation, etc.

Evergreen: it has an everlasting appeal to your audience/target market.

Profitable: this one is pretty self-explanatory.

A solution to a problem: You'd like to make sure your site can help your audience to address their problems.

Lastly, yes passion. Why? Because we will write a lot of content. It should be much easier when it starts with passion.

Say you choose for example, you choose the beauty category. This is a very wide category.
A beauty salon can offer a wide variety of services, including tanning, waxing, facials, massage, etc.
If, for example, we take one of these subcategories - let's say facials - this could be our niche. However, we could narrow it down even further by focusing on facials for business women 30 years old and over. That is a tightly defined niche.

When we target a specific target audience/target market, that means we'll have less competitions and can focus more of our efforts in building our business better. We won't waste time and energy rambling about so many stuff that will confuse our readers that visit our site.

I would say, do your research on the target audience you would like to help to solve their problems. What kinds of products you would recommend or review on your website?

Also, check out the competitions. How do they serve their audiences?

Here is the link to Kyle’s post about Target audience where you can find ideas for great niches. All the best,

Ferra

What you can do is to give a score to how much you love the subject, and another score on how well you know the subject, also which one you can produce more content.
Pick the first 3 and go to Google Trends and see which subject is more popular, or you can just type in the keywords to see how many websites comes up.
After that, you need to narrow down your niche by using keyword tools.
You can start with one niche and do the other ones later when you have time.

Hi Apenner, that's a great thing to do. You say you want to narrow down your niche, you mean narrow down your type of product. I know the boys have said this in their training but it's not correct. Niche is a segment of the market or of all people who buy products 😊
