NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

Hi fellow affiliates

I am thinking of entering into the baby niche, specifically baby room equipment. This is because I have three kids of my own and know the importance of providing the convenience to baby and mother bear.

Alternatively I would like to be in the fitness niche, focusing on gym accessories. Having first hand exercise experience, i could not stress the importance of convenience, ease and comfort while exercising.

What do you think fellow affiliates? I appreciate any helpful criticism.

Hi - nursery equipment is a great idea and your own experience will gain you trust with your readers. Fitness and health is one of the top three most competitive niches and therefore more difficult to be successful in.

I think the first one because you can show photographs of you using the equipmment yourself which immediately establishes trust

Hi, I would go with the one that you will enjoy the most. it should not feel like work. it should be fun and enjoyable to learn about it and write about it.

Hi Naeem

Great question. Definitely agree with the other response, go with the baby niche, the baby room equipment offers great opportunities with a range of products too.

Wishing you every success!

Blessings

So very true if there is passion in what you do then the rest will come naturally.

Hello,

I'm super confused. I selected a theme and really liked the picture it had, but when I looked at my website, the image was not there. It looks so different. My image was called edulab (attached) and was supposed to be with the bus in the middle and my title above it. What I have does not look at all like this! What happened?

My webpage is successfulworldteachresources.siterubix.com

The pictures on the templates are just to show what it can look like. When you upload the template all the pictures disappear. Then you can load your own pictures later.

Hi Andree,
Look in the WordPress dashboard under Appearance -> Customize and then find among the options "Header Image" or "Header Media". Your image might be there, but not set as a header image. I've created a detailed video on YouTube, which shows how to customize (and change) a theme. What might be helpful for you is almost at the end of this video - 36+ minutes in. Start watching from there: https://youtu.be/55tWKZ73MoQ.

Thank you very much Jewelia... but I do not see Appearance. Here is what I see:

Hi Andree,
I think that it is best to start with the following:
1) Check if the theme was installed successfully; then activate it.
2) You may need to resize the "edulab" picture with right pixel coordinates. Then upload that picture to your page or post.
3) Add and update contents afterward,

Hope this help to clear up your confusion.

Kindly,

Charles

Themes will not always look the same when you preview them (before you install them) versus when you actually start using them as there are features, images, etc. that can change the look of your website.

Not to worry at all here though, that is quite normal and as you build out your website, the design and look will evolve as you create content.

Thank you very much. I actually starting on lesson 6 and it looks as all of these are covered there. I feel good with building websites and blogs, because I did it before, but I am not used to now see the background image. I'm hoping to be able to see it. One problem I had was to not be able to move my text, so it would go along with the image.

Personally, I like having my website open on a separate page while I am watching the training videos within the WA page.

To do this - open a separate page on your browser(Chrome, Firefox, whatever).
-enter your website URL with /wp-admin at the end.
-example: www.awesomeketodiet.org/wp-admin

Then it will take you to the back office for your site on a separate page.

It's a much nicer way to work.

Hi.

I just published the About Me and Privacy Policy for my website and noticed when I go to those pages, the titles of the posts (i.e. "About Me" and "Privacy Policy") are not bolded. This looks weird since I have headings in the posts that are. Is there a way to bold the titles or is this just the way the Generatepress theme is? Or is this covered in a later lesson? Or... did I mess something up already?!

Thanks.

Toby

Have you tried viewing the page from a different computer, browser or phone?

That is based on the theme that you are using. It is the way Generate Press' default settings are, and that is completely fine. :)

You should be able to customize the typography for titles and what not by going to the Customize area of GeneratePress. You can also do it via CSS.

I just looked at it on my phone. It's the same. But I've noticed the title is actually a larger font than the headings in the post so I guess that is how the title is highlighted to stand out from the rest of the text. I guess if I don't like that, then I don't like the theme i.e. I think the titles should stand out the most on the post (more than the headings).

Thanks for the help.

Thanks, but it looks like that option is only available for the premium version of generatepress.

I may just have been (obsessing) staring at the posts for too long since they're my first two ever. It's starting to look okay now. Maybe they'll look fine once I step away from it for a bit.

Ahh, I didn't think of that. I do use the premium version.

Hello Top Helpers
I have what I think is an issue. Do you think I am missing something my website has a sample page with privacy policy [ add your website] I cannot add it . I have been asking questions on this issue for the last couple of days.
I am going to have to leave it but I know it is not right.
I have to move on if I am going to get my first website up and running.
Any ideas? Do the top helpers ever call on the phone?
Thank you

If I remember right, you can just edit it to have your website name and your email address. You can just use that as a template. :) Hope this helps.

Hey Ted - I have always deleted the Privacy Policy that came with the theme and then filled out and published the Privacy Policy that comes as a writing template in SiteContent.
