NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any qustions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you wan to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

I am very new and I am just finishing lesson 2 and I greatly look forward to the success. My goals are to make $30,000 per month online and this is a great opportunity for me. How it is broken down. Is the $290 us it for a years worth of support? I want to build my website for a non-profit wanting and for Affiliate Marketing. That will be two separate websites, yet I will work on one at a time. The video content will be in the non-profit and I want to actually build now the Affiliate Marketing part first. Once I learn how to do one and fully understand a Niche. What I want to know is do you build many pages in the website or is the Affiliate Marketing website is one niche. So you are offering 2 websites meaning I only can do one niche? Thank you all in advance.

The general rule here is one website per niche so as not to confuse your customers. Yes, you will be building a site with many blogs as content is the way to traffic. Go premium and you will be able to own up to 25 sites. The black Friday offer of $299 is valid for one year premium membership.

You will want to have one web site per niche. To have multiple focuses within one website will confuse your followers and hinder your success with any niche. Going Premium is the best way to work with multiple directions as it gives you the tools to do so in the most economic manner.

I’m learning so much, and this has really been exciting! I’m curious for others who are beyond my training...how long did it honestly take for you to make any money. Also, how much money did you start making, and how long did it take for it to begin growing.
Thanks for all your help with these questions.

Hey guys.. this website building thing is frustrating when you're starting from scratch.. I want to add menu's on my website but they keep on getting onto the wrong place. Here's an example:
HOME I BEAUTY I FASHION I LIFESTYLE I NAILS
and so people can click on those menu's . Can anyone help?

Hi - this is covered in lesson 8. I notice you haven't chosen a narrow niche as recommended in the training, if you intend to have posts on all those different subjects. You are targeting a lot of different audiences, rather than being seen as an authority on a specific topic.

that maybe down to the theme that is on your site.
have a look in appearance customize at where you can place menus and whether it is what you want - if not you have a small selection to choose from.
don't forget to make each of these categories and add tose to create yur menu.
then each one will be clickable and show the articles relevant to the category.
have fun

You need 5 pages named for each of those things. Then, you go into menus and add each page to your main menu.

Or you can label existing pages by those names while inside of the menu, and that will allow you to move them into the order you want.

Hi - thank you so much for replying as I have no clue what I'm doing lol, just following the step-by-step training but obviously I'm ahead of what I'm supposed to be doing as I'm only at lesson 5...
When you mention "targeting a lot of different audiences", is this a bad thing?

Hi - as an example, say I found your site through searching on Google for an article on beauty, perhaps "lipstick for older women". Having read that post, I then discover all your other articles were on fashion, nails etc which I am not interested in, so I would leave your website and then you have lost a potential customer.

If however, all your posts were on beauty for older women, I would have much more to read, stay on your site much longer and see you as an authority on that subject, and then, having built up that level of trust, I would be more likely to buy something through your links.

That is why it is recommended to have a narrow niche, which has less competition and doesn't confuse your visitors.

Oh my god, wow, I haven't thought of it that way! Now I understand and here comes the million dollar question: Which niche should I pick? I have a huge interest in the beauty/luxury lifestyle world.
As in make-up and skincare from high end products.
Any thoughts on this or how I can figure it out?

Hi - which would you most enjoy writing about? Think about a target audience, such as skincare for sensitive skin, organic skin products, moisturisers for women in their 30s, waterproof cosmetics, makeup for evening looks etc.

Hang in there. You will get it!

Hi - In that case I can see it clearly: skincare for dry/atopic skin.
So I will write about that! Another thing tho, if I start writing about it, I will most likely want to refer to a certain product I'm using.
So I'm promoting that product I guess? If I promote it now, and I'm not an affiliate from that specific product, I'm basically promoting their product for free? (as for now). Or am I seeing it wrong?
What are your thoughts/advise. Thank you so much.

Hi - yes, that's a good niche. Your site should be a mix of purely informational articles with no selling intent, plus product reviews which are where you will add your affiliate links.

So, start with general articles on your niche, such as what can dry skin be a sign of, why is my skin so itchy, do vitamins help dry skin etc. Once you have built up some content, you can apply to the affiliate programs and do some product reviews.

Referring to your comment on starting with general articles on my niche, can these be articles I found on the internet? Bits and pieces of it? Is it okay to copy/paste etc.. Many thanks,

Hi - no, absolutely not. You can't copy and paste anything, not even a couple of sentences. Everything has to be original and in your own words.

Hey folks,
I've been working on and off on a blog that helps parents understand (and conquer) the ins and outs and "behind the curtain" stuff of preschool/daycare settings for a while now.

To niche something like that into tangible products for affiliate marketing, would it make sense to then focus on like...teacher-recommended childcare items? Say, a section on things your kid needs in preschool in the winter months, another for what they'd need in summer, another for what's best for holidays? Or would that still be too broad?

That’s a good idea. You can also take some time to browse online for relevant affiliated programs that may incorporate your niche. When I first started I was so overwhelmed thinking that there weren’t gonna be any affiliate program for my nice, and guess what? I found over 15!
