NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

I wanted to make a website about an specific franchise of relatively popular fictional novels and books, promoting them and sites where they can be purchased alongside a review of their individual contents is my idea. If I remain with an starter account instead of a premium one, how many of such sites could I create? I would be possible to create one, eliminate it and create another to replace it? The first question is really important while the second one is just in case that becomes necessary.

You are given one free Rubix website, therefore you can only create one site. However, you are able to categorise different ideas on that site. For example, you can (and should ) write as many blogs on different novels as possible. You can categorise them into different genres . The headings could be the particular type of fiction. Eg sci fi, romance etc., Each of your blogs can have links attached leading to the sites that are selling the books. All this is taught in your training. Jim

Yeah absolutely. But it's also very competitive though. So you need to niche down into a specific area

That's a great plan! You're right that the Health & Fitness Industry is one of the most lucrative and always there and I think will remain I guess forever.

One of the products I observed that I always see are health supplements.

Hope you all the success with your business!

Hello my friends, I have chosen a weight loss nice, to lose weight in a healthy way, my passion was always helping others finding the big 4, mindset, soul set, hearth set, health set.
I just saw the video and have some questions. I have given the keywords to Jaaxy, what I found was a bid shocking,

Avg; 3290. Traffic; 560. QSR; 0. KQI; great. SEO; 86
Those numbers are not bad, right?
Is this possible, or did I've got something wrong here? I am a bit confused.

Hi - did you actually click "get QSR" to see the full results? It would be unusual to see such high traffic with 0 QSR.
Reply

Yes Diane, that was the same I thought, but yes I clicked the get QSR. But now I am unsure, I will try it ones again.

Every once in a while you can get some results that are too skewed one way or the other, but even Jaaxy here is telling you with the grade of 86 that this particular keyword isn't as good as the numbers seem to suggest. What I do when I find results like that is change the keyword slightly to find a more "real world" return. Then I have a better idea of the keyword I'm actually working with. But don't worry, you can find almost limitless low hanging fruit keywords with data that makes sense. Watch Jay's "Using Jaaxy Like a Boss" webinar and you can see how he uses all of Jaaxy's bells and whistles to find the best keywords, going way past just the keyword search feature. It's eye opening! :)

Thank you, Eric I will remember this, unfortunately, I didn't know this before I have chosen my website name and domain, I thought it was a logical sentence, but I am from Holland so maybe I was wrong, now I have to live with it and hope for the best.

Hey guys,

Quick question regarding my niche... I'm thinking of ways to be most effective in driving my audience to my site. My initial thought was purchasing products within my niche myself to create videos/pictures/written word for review purposes for my audience. That seems like the best way to give authentic feedback on products. What are your thoughts on that and what other ways have you found effective? Thank you!

That is a great idea! Some people absolutely do that and buying the products is certainly is the best way to be well informed on them. Other people will research the product reviews and see what others who have purchased the products have said to inform themselves.

This thread has some great suggestions on how to research products you have not purchased: Good luck, Shannon

Our friend ARCCRI asked a question in French and it seems it needs to be resubmitted in English for the benefit of everyone.
The question is: If you upgrade to premium and after sometime you find yourself obliged to go back to free member is that possible or not ? I understood that for some reason a member finds it difficult to pay that month or for some months the monthly subscription so he needs to go back to the free membership. Is that possible>

Hi - no, it's not possible. Once you have been a premium member, you can't go back to being a free starter again. If a member cannot pay their premium subscription, then they would be locked out of the platform.
