NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any qustions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you wan to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

Hi Kyle/All, I just completed Lesson 8 (Custom Menus & Navigation). I should have commented/posted questions earlier (adjacent to earlier lessons) but here we go. I'm having multiple issues so far with my site. I don't think any of them are critical, but things aren't working quite the way I expect. I created my About Me and Privacy Policy pages, and thought I had designated them as pages, but both are showing as posts. Also, the theme I chose does not seem to be working. It looks nothing like the default layout I see for this particular theme. The site creation and initial pages creation within it were completed from within the WA site wizard (Websites>Manage Websites, etc.). More recent lessons were completed within the WordPress admin, so I'm wondering if there is some issue on the WA side of this. I don't think I'm doing a very good job of describing my issues here.

1. Is there a way to convert posts to pages within the WordPress Admin?
2. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get the template I chose to actually display on the website? WP admin says it's active.
3. My posts are displaying on the home page in a list. This may be related to the theme issue. I wanted to put custom content on the home page and then have folks be able to navigate to other pages from site nav or a sidebar menu (widget).

Thanks for any advice/guidance.

Hi Dana,

1) Here is a good training for converting page to post and vice versa: 2) Are you talking about WP theme?

What theme did you choose when you built your website? Generate Press?

If you are looking for using another theme, on your WP back office, go to Appearance > Theme > Add New. As a Premium member, you have around 7K themes to choose from. Preview them first and read the description before you install and activate it.

3) If you don't want a blog roll on your home page and want a static page, on your WP back office, go to Setting > Reading > Choose Static.

Hope this helps,
Ferra

1) the best and quickest way is to simply copy and past your posts into a page and then delete the post that you don't want.

2) a link to your site will help us see if the template is load.

3) this is normal, this is a blogroll on your homepage that is populating with your latest posts. This is normal. You can switch to a static homepage if you want to. To do that go to your dashboard and under settings-->Reading you will see the option at the top in a radio button to select a static page (which you must have ready) or latest posts. See the attached image.

How do you make money, that’s the 64,000 dollar question for me? I heard on the first video you come up with something of interest to you? Like what? Something to sell? An instructional video of some sort? I just need to know before I pull the trigger to pay to learn something that might not be what I’m wanting, and is the information I’m seeking, is what I have to pay for? I just don’t want to get half way through this training to find out it’s something that’s going to cost me lots of money only to find out it’s been a mistake? I know this thing is about Traing to make money, but how? Do I have to pay to find out then it’s something that’s out of my capabilities? I originally found this site in the interest of the sale of impressions and now that I’m trying to find out through this site, it’s looking like it has nothing to do with impression sales but, only making a website of some kind? Like what on earth am I going to make a website of that’ll attract the numbers of ppl to make a decent amount of money?

Hey Wayne

First find a niche you're passionate about. To put it in perspective would you be writing about it in five years time.

You need to follow through the training step by step to learn how to set up properly. Here's a resource may be you'd like look at You can use Jaaxy to drill down keywords, you are allowed 30 searches. Look for searches (avg.) above 30 and competition (qsr. ) lower than 100, the lower the qsr the better.

This is a learning platform that teaches you to build a website for affiliate marketing. You can earn a commission by referring new members here or by promoting products from the likes of Amazon.

So, if your interest is dogs for example, you write lots of articles such as how to feed a puppy and then promote related items. There is a lot of writing involved and it takes months of consistent work.

Wayne, as affiliate marketers, we make money by promoting a company's goods or services. We are given unique links called affiliate links that enable us to do so. We typically use blogs (that get ranked in the search engines), various social media platforms, forums, and things of this nature as promotional tools.

Whenever someone comes across our content, clicks on our link, and purchases something, we earn a commission. It's a lot like a commission-based job in the real world (like a car salesman) -- but on the internet. Affiliate marketing works within any profitable industry -- sports, finance, fashion and beauty, technology, self-help, food and cooking, pet care and so on.

I know it sounds hopeless but I really don’t have any niche that I’m passionate abt? I’m a construction worker n sick of it n want to make money a different way bt to make a website, I have no idea, n it would have to be something someone else is interested in to make money rt? And the concept of a website isn’t something you create then let it set there forever rt? Won’t it take attention cuz the same thing for years would be worthless rt?

So is it like piggy backing? Meaning someone or company etc... has a website n then whatever it is, let’s say or give it the name zebra, now a company or individual has this site called zebra n they sell or offer whatever, they make money off their product n also when ppl actually click on their site? And by piggy backing, I’m curious if I were to use or copy all their stuff n just put it under another names site, can or do you make money that way? Or is that illegal cuz sounds if not illegal, not very respectful?

I’m so lost and have no idea how any of this works? To me when u say we’re an affiliate to others in different industries, it sounds to me like I must have an inventory of actual physical things to sell

Dude, it’s a type of online business. This is not get rich quick. If you happen to find one, let all of us know.

I can tell you that I haven’t written blog posts about my passions. People say that because it’s easy to start with. But personally I would be so sick of my passion if I was living and breathing it 24/7.

I have made 5 figures in an industry I had no f****** clue about. It didn’t even interest me but it has a lot of potential in things that people have money in and buy stuff. If you seriously want to do nothing at all then my recommendation is to write posts, put them up on your website and then turn on advertising. You know those annoying websites where there’s ads everywhere and you have no idea where the text is? Yeah do that.
You might make $50-$100/month. If that’s enough for you that’s great. 👍🏼

All the best bro.

Have you tried to log out ans sign in? Sometimes it's just a glitch. Otherwise you can try to create a new post from scratch, not from the template.

If it is published, you can edit any content directly within your website back office at any time.

To edit posts or pages on your website, you will need to log into the back office of your website. You can do this through the SiteManager (Websites => SiteManager).

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/websites

Within your back office, you will have a tab for both Posts and Pages within your main menu. (see attached). You will simply want to click on either one of those, to see a full list and to manage your respective Posts and Pages associated with your website.

Upon going into the Posts or Pages manager, you will see a list of all of them. You can edit them by "hovering" over top of the post, and then you will click on the "Edit" button. (see attached)

You can Quick Edit, Trash or View them from this hover menu. You can also click the main post or page title if you want to go into the editor.

I hope this helps you out here!

Hi. If I already have a domain name. Can I connect via this platform and create my webpage, get the plugins, optimize for google etc (if I have Premium) and run my site as normal?

Then further down the road if I need to move my site out of this platform for some reason, is this possible?
Thank you for your help!

JGatlin3 Premium
Yes you can. Just go to "websites", then select domains, go to your domain provider and add ns1.mywahosting.com and ns2.mywahosting.com to your DNS.
Personal I use Ecwid site builders as a plug in so I can place it wherever I want. Woocommerce is also a good choice

Thank you JGatlin3, seems easy enough.
But what happens if I sell my business in the future? Is it easy to "go back to" not being a part of WA?

Do I own my own domains in WA and have full access to them even if I am not part of WA in the future?

Kind regards!

Hi Susanna,

WA will only keep a backup of your website(s) for up to 60 days, so if you return within that time, they can be restored.

If you think you will be gone longer than 60 days, or if you want to keep your website online, you will want to take your own backup and maybe find another host for your website and move it before your Premium membership expired.

You can move your website to ANY host you want if you were to ever want to move or cancel here. If you don't pay for your domain on an annual basis (ie, let it lapse), it goes back into the domain pool with the rest of the available domains out there.

I'm wondering how I should move forward with my niche selection. I very much enjoy travel and wish to choose this niche but I think it may be extremely competitive for rankings/traffic. Is this a lot to tackle for a newbie?

Instead, would it be "easier" to go with something more simple such as a beauty niche like nails/hair/facials? I am not interested in this as much but it seems to be pinpointed somehow.

Thank you Kindly for any input anyone might have on this.
Reply
DianeScorpio Premium
Hi - whatever you decide upon should be something you are genuinely interested in, as you will have to write a lot of content about it.

Travel is competitive, so you would need to narrow it down to have less competition, such as choosing a specific region, or concentrating on a type of vacation, such as cruises for seniors, or city breaks for foodies etc.

If you are not really interested in the beauty niche, then you will probably get bored with researching and writing about it every week for the forseeable future.

Hi, Katherine, I believe it is better to go with a niche you're passionate about. You may want to break travel into a sub category niche.

To put it in perspective would you be writing about it in five years time.

Here's a resource may be you'd like look at You can use Jaaxy to drill down keywords. Look for searches (avg.) above 30 and competition (qsr. ) lower than 100, the lower the qsr the better.
