NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any qustions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you wan to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

You may be better starting with the online affiliate certification course first, at least the first few lessons to get your website up and running and with more understanding of affiliate marketing, then you could swap over to the bootcamp and continue on.

Will our training lessons still be available after we finished the 10 sessions once we move to Premium Membership? I just asked because I am seeing about Menus and Widgets which will be more applicable later. We can try them now but I am not sure if I can remember the procedure later when more needed?

Yes, from what I understand; they will still be available. All you have to do is go into training and sort of look at the lessons; and uncheck the ones you want and go over them again; and if you want to look again; leave them unchecked. If I am wrong; another Member please correct me?

That would be fine for now. Anyway, there is a huge community and the founders are always available if we have questions. Just like now, I have seen that I have loopholes viewing the website that I created. I can always go back and correct them.

Thanks Michael!

No Problem; I have not learned this yet myself; but if you are doing that? I suggest you learn to back up your website; and how to load the back up. Just in case? Otherwise; I suggest you mostly leave your site alone; unless you talk to Site Support, Kyle and Carson; hope this helps?

You are most welcome Rose and you will see how much more you will gain along the way when you decide to go premium.

If you do there is currently a special Black Friday offer till May 11 where you can pay only $299 for the year and that will be locked in forever while you remain as a yearly member just wanted to let you know.

That is your choice to make how you want to go as premium but thought you should know to give you the best opportunity available while it is still there

Here is Kyle's post on this to give you further information.

Ok, I will see budget allocation for that. I am just curious about what I've read from the community discussion last night, is it true that we will begin to get income from here in 6-12 months? Or are there ways to speed it up depending on the training that we are availing?

Normally that is around the time it may take to see some money coming through remember this is a training platform to show you how to build a website from scratch with the niche of your choice,

The training is built in a way and in a certain order to learn how to do this right and that is why it is important to follow each lesson in the order given and complete each task at the end of the lessons.

This is done for a good reason for your to get the best out of the training and Kyle and Carson have had WA going for 15 years and still are going strong because they know what is the right way and what not to do.

You then need to get your website indexed by Google and the other search engines along with creating posts about the niche you have chosen and keep creating content.

That in itself can take time as you need to build up your website to attract visitors.

That is why it can take some time it is also dependant on how much effort and work you put in as well

There are many other factors that are covered in the training to monetize your website but working and putting in the effort and creating content is a crucial step to success online.

Online or affiliate marketing is passive income meaning there are no quick ways to succeed and note that you are building your own brand and business online.

Just like any brick and mortar business, they don't become successful overnight even with all the overheads they need to stay afloat.

There are many scams online promising you the world and making thousands in a quick time but the only ones making money quickly are the scammers ripping you off in the process.

WA is not a quick rich scheme but a steady process to build a solid foundation to your website and as stated above this is dependant on your own effort and why you put into it.

That is why many fail and give up because they don't want to do the work and expect to push a button and make money overnight. It doesn't work that way

Hope that gives you more clarity with this.

As for your budget allocation the suggestion to go yearly is the cheapest way but that is only if you can afford it. Remember family and bills come first you can always upgrade to yearly later in need be its just that the $299 is and only will be available till May 11 but that is your choice to make

Ok, I am willing too. In fact , I am working my way towards traditional business and have the same mindset but my family only permits me to do online works due to my limited physical capacity. Still a bit limp in walking, though stable anyway.

Ok, hubby can answer that more depending on his priorities. I am still somewhat dependent on him

Log in to your site, click on settings on the left side of the menu at the bottom, and in general settings at the top is site title.

That's where you can delete and change the title.

Great lesson. Q: 1. If I change the email in Admin, who sends the the confirmation of the change - Word Press and/or Wealthy Affiliate? 2. Who can see my settings in my website? 3. Can a custom password be made to get into my website?
Sorry, really new to all of this! :-)

Hi everyone,

I just recently rejoined WA. Very glad to be back here. I just finished the video about niches, My question is, let's say I'm interested in the health niche. Would I create one complete website that promotes various products in sub categories of this niche? Or would I make multiple sites? For instance, could I do dieting products and exercise equipment under one site? Or would I stick to dieting products under one site and then exercise equipment on a separate site? Thank you in advance!

Hi Markeisha, Joe here. It is usually suggested to go with one site first, get it up and running and then start another. Health is a broad niche as I think you know. It can get complicated trying to do two sites at the same time. Get traffic built on one first.

Hi - the narrower the niche, the better. You need to be seen as an authority on your subject. So, even dieting products itself is too broad. You need to think of a target audience. So, dieting for seniors, dieting in pregnancy, dieting for diabetics, raw food diets, dieting for vegans etc.

I have a question regarding niches.

I love dad jokes, and I own the domain DadJokesAndMemes.com

For my 'niche', since my site is related to dad jokes, and memes (obviously) I did a search on Amazon and only found a few dad joke books that would be for sale.

How else could I find products to build a niche around?

I also have a Facebook Dad Joke page that has around 6,100 followers, so I think I can honestly turn this into something. I am just not sure about how granular I should be, since there don't seem to be a ton of products for 'dad jokes' specifically.

Why not create your own book? You get all the proceeds and you have 6000 people you can market it to immediately.

hmm....
to name but a few things that pop into mind:
T-shirts, coffee cups, etc (aka make yourself (your company) very brandable and develop swag)...
Prank gifts....
For the poetically inclined you could have a good roasting service...
But beyond that, it could be a real issue to monetize the dad joke site. Any idea what kind of numbers you get when you run a search thru a keyword tool?

Maybe Dad jokes could be a way into a parenting-related niche, or more specifically, a father or even father-son related niche. How dads and sons can hang out and do stuff together could lead into some more promising product offers... sports gear... games... Then there's also the merch angle. Dad jokes on coffee mugs - pairs of mugs with q on one and a on the other... etc...
