NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

==> Go here if that is you.

If you have any qustions about your "niche" or direction of your business and you wan to get feedback from the community, leave them below and we will be happy to help.

Onto the next lesson, building a website! Exciting stuff is ahead! :)

Yeah, that's what I though, that this price is really nothing to what you're asked to pay in other programs. Many of them get-rich-quick schemes. This one is serious but be ready for a long journey :)

I have just started today! Just built my first website. Are you currently making money online?

Yes, it is definitely possible to build an online income here. Just go through the training and take action on every step and ask whenever you have questions.

I shared a link with you to the training earlier and that really is the best place to start.

I too am new here and so far as I can see it's some of the best training you can get

I wonder if I might make a polite request... For those of you who have been working at this long enough to have created a website and began generating income, may I ask about how long it took before you were able to begin earning enough to cover the monthly cost of premium membership? Thank you kindly to anyone who'd like to answer! I am just getting started and am curious about an average time frame to help justify the initial cost to the hubby! ;)

Greetings!
I’m trying to really hone in on my target market, I want to be very clear about how to proceed and would love some advice.

My husband has a rare health condition that is becoming more common by the day. It is a very underserved market. Things like these are still available:

(The health condition)treatment.com
(The health condition)relief.com
(The health condition)solutions.com
(The health condition)care.com
...basically everything is available except for www.(The health condition).com

I can see the specific questions and concerns of these people in all the different Facebook Groups that I’m in, so I know what to write about and what products to advertise based on what they talk about.

I know the domain name isn’t a huge part of the overall marketing plan, but in this case I think it might be because the name of the rare health condition is hard to say, looks a little foreign and looks irrelevant to people unless they have it. (Maybe that’s why the domains are still available lol)

This health condition falls under the umbrella of a larger health condition, let’s just say that umbrella is chronic pain, for instance.

Should I get a domain like www.chronicpainproducts.com and use the rare health condition keywords within the articles I write so they’ll still get ranked, and as a bonus, chronic pain patients would know the site could also be relevant to them? If I use the rare condition in the domain name, I will likely eliminate chronic pain patients from stopping by.

Thoughts?

any health is going to be a great niche. As to your question as to go general or specific to the condition of your husband, I would get the general domain and write the articles using the keywords for your husband's condition.

Before you buy your domain, take a look at my article I wrote on purchasing domains. I mite save you some headache's in the future.

good luck!

Hi Cheri, If you had an address like www.chronicpain.com it would of course attract more than your target audience. However, you can drill down with your keywords in the posts you write. So, a keyword might be "Escape from MS" for example. It has a QSR of 73. The website address is important and great if you can get close to your target but keywords play a huge part. Often the keywords don't relate to my domain but I do get plenty of organic hits. Hope this helps, Steve C

I like your choice of domain name but to me that makes me think of products to relieve pain? Which I personally would go visit!! but if you are wanting to bring awareness to a specific ailment then is there not a shorter name of it? I have C.O.P.D. (you may know what that is) but obviously I would not use the full name in a domain x are you going to advertise products for his illness? or just general assistance to people who have it?

Hopefully, Im understanding your question correctly. It's all about whom you are trying to target specifically. Is the biggest part of your husbands condition chronic pain? If so you should address this. Having a super specific niche is good. If its not a condition that is talked about alot of people will be looking for info. IMHO, why not write about both? You can address chronic pain and the specific autoimmune diasese you speak of. Just make separate pages within the site and direct people to the specific pages through your links. Use The keywords to target your specific diasease people and broader keywords for the chronic pain people. Autoimmune disorders are like a rubix cube and very individualized, and pain is at the core of alot of the disease, so you can really supercharge your site if you do it right! Hope this helps, good luck!!

Be general but not too general. You want a website where you can speak about a lot of topics regarding your niche. If you only use one health condition as your niche then all your content should be targeted towards that condition.

@Jojoma14 Thank you for engaging! I’m not necessarily trying to bring awareness to the condition, I’m more targeting the people who have already been diagnosed. I’ll be writing about products that may help them with pain relief, and hopefully brilliant product ideas they’ve never thought of before! Unfortunately, there is no acronym or a shorter word for the condition. It’s just one long, weird looking word lol! Sounds like it would be best to keep the domain name more general and use all the low hanging keywords under the chronic pain umbrella.

Thank you for response! Yes, a major part of my husband’s condition is chronic pain. Chronic pain blogs, websites, product pages, etc are oversaturated. However, according to Jaaxy, there are 10,168 searches per month for the name of his condition (who knows what they’re looking for when they are searching that term though). The QSR’s for everything Jaaxy suggests for the condition is under 100, there are very few websites, blogs or products pages, etc for the condition.

It sounds like I might rank for his condition whether I use it in the domain name or not. The natural course of my writing will include both chronic pain and his condition just by the nature of them going hand-in-hand. It sounds like it would be best to keep the domain name more general.

Hi
Health is a good domain because health care is worldwide so if you n get good affiliate you will hit it hard there.

My advice would be to get the specific condition domain, since it has a specific name. People who have, or get that condition will be most familiar with the spelling and meaning of it, so your target audience is already focused and relative by the time they land on your site.

You can still branch out to broader topics related (like the chronic pain example), even if your domain is specific.

What if I bought the relevant domain names with his specific condition and created basic, but informative, landing pages that pointed to my broader topic site?

I have a question which is hopefully not a stupid one...
So how does my website get a better rank in google, respectively come to the first page of results as in our days hardly anyone goes to page two anymore^^

if that part comes later in the training I am sorry for the question.

Hi - that is precisely what this platform teaches you! Essentially, you will learn how to find the keywords which people are using when doing a Google search. You add the keywords to the content on your website, and Google recognises that you have valuable information and ranks you higher.

ok, then i probably am just not yet at the point of the training thank you!!

Since I am manually building my own site, I found an excellent online tool that lets you know if your home title (page title) and home description (meta description) will be fully displayed in Google search.

Apparently, if your home title and description are too long, Google will cut them short but adding "...".

https://totheweb.com/learning_center/tool-test-google-title-meta-description-lengths/

Here's the link. Just key in title and description.
