NICHES. The scariest word for most people when starting out. However, the idea of a niche should not scare you. Instead it should be exciting.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a distinct segment of a market, in other words an "audience".

When choosing a niche that fits you, you should be choosing something that is ideally an interest, a passion, a hobby, but it could be something that you would like to learn about. You don't need to BE an expert, you BECOME an expert.

I personally enjoy many different things. I enjoy basketball, I used to collect baseball cards, I like to go skiing, I am really interested in men's fashion, exercise, internet marketing, and I love everything about the online business world.

There are also many niches over the years that I have been very successful within without knowing anything about them before getting into them. Dieting, voice over IP, hosting...are just a few.

Almost anything you can think of is a niche and that is why we are going to get you to choose YOUR niche based on things that you are interested in. You can earn money online from absolutely every single niche because there are billions of people out there searching for information, for solutions, and spending billions of dollars or products/services every day.

The idea of a niche can be a little confusing at first, so I have created a video walk-through for this lesson "Choosing Your Direction - It Starts With a Niche" that is going to walk you through what a niche is, how you earn money through a niche, and I will get you choosing your initial direction online.

Check out the video below.

Your online business should not feel like a day job. Earning money online should be fun, and it is fun. This all starts with choosing a niche that you are interested in and will enjoy working with.

The MORE you enjoy doing something the LESS it feels like a job and the more productive you are going to be. Carson and I are immensely passionate about online business and teaching people how to make money online, so that is the niche we have chosen with Wealthy Affiliate.

Your niche could be anything, but at the core of your niche selection it should be something that you "like". Something you enjoy. Something you can talk about. Something you want to learn about.

Task 1: Choose Your Direction

We want you to select the niche that interests you most and gets you the most excited.

A few things that you should understand about niches are:

(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won't be your last (so don't worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a "full time" income/business

There is NO SUCH THING as choosing the wrong niche.

Also, note that you can always change your niche down the road. Just because you are choosing a niche now does not mean you will be in this particular niche forever. Either way, please do not spend a week choosing your niche. Within the next 15-30 minutes (maximum) you should have your "starting point" niche chosen.

If you have any questions about your niche, feel free to leave a question below and we will help you out.

If you are REALLY STUCK at this point and you cannot decide on a niche, perhaps you may be interested in the make money/affiliate marketing niche. If you don't have a niche at this point, this will be your niche and we have an Affiliate Bootcamp dedicated to those that are interested in promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

Hi folks. In building a new website/ domain for a niche, it appears I might be foolish to not just buy in to the premium program for better everything right out of the gate. Thoughts? Can I make a decent money making online site with only the simplest free options? Or, do I really need to invest more?

Hi Jim. That's really up to you. Only you can decide if it is worth spending the extra money. But for me, when I saw what PREMIUM gave me, it was a no brainer and has been well worth the extra money. With that said, you do not need to upgrade to PREMIUM, the starter package is enough to "Get Started"... no pun intended.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Hi Jim, you can build your website on the free siterubix.com domain if you're testing things out. But if you are serious about your business and want to rank your website well on Google for driving traffic, you're recommended to get a private domain. It's more difficult to rank for the free siterubix domain and does not look professional to visitors. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I'm just going to suggest this; and I hope no one gets mad at me; I am just trying to help a Fellow Member. What I suggest you do; start with the $49.00 Plus Tax a Month Membership. Eventually a discount deal will come around. When that comes around; take it. And in the meantime; you can save up money for that discount deal. Hope this helps? No Offense to other Members; just trying to help a Member out.

Hello Team - I have a very sketchy idea for a niche that I think, given a lot of work, could be profitable. Which direction would benefit me the most: Online Entrepreneur Certification or the Affiliate Bootcamp? From what I understand, unless I have a well-defined niche, I should take the Affiliate Bootcamp?

Hi - Welcome to WA.

If you are following the Bootcamp Training (Make Money Online Niche), then realistically, it will take about 400 posts to really make a serious amount of income from it. If you are publishing 2-3 posts per week, then you can expect to start appearing on Page 1 of Google around months 3-6. This can vary of course based on your keyword research and your content quality etc.

The MMO niche is very competitive so you may want to choose the OEC training, your choice. It will generally take 3-6 months before you see any real ranking/income though. It takes a lot of continuous hard work to get there either way.

I would just quote Kyle's words, you can actually be successful in any niche. The niche you choose should be something you are most knowledgable about, something that you are most passionate to talk about and write.

It is not about which niche can get you the most traffic or benefit you the most. It is about how you build your website, produce quality content that will bring value to your readers, and how you can show Google and other search engines that you can be an authority (expert) in your niche.

So, what are the things you are most passionate about? Narrow down those interest into one thing that you sure you can write tons of articles with.

All the best,
Ferra

How do I know if I've picked a good niche or if I'm on the right track? I understand that can change at any given time, but I want to make sure I'm coming at it with all my best. It also seems it might be best to begin developing content (posts and articles) prior to even building a site. Thoughts?

Hello,

I think that is normal. Choosing a niche is a big step.

A Niche should be specific, evergreen, profitable, a solution to a problem, and most importantly a passion you can live for.

What is it you are so passionate about? Something that you can turn into a lot of content that will fill your website with and attract visitors to your site. Something that you can use to answer your readers questions or solve their problems with.

Specific: Who is your targeted segment? Who will benefit from your site? Gender, age, occupation, etc.

Evergreen: it has an everlasting appeal to your audience/target market.

Profitable: this one is pretty self-explanatory.

A solution to a problem: You'd like to make sure your site can help your audience to address their problems.

Lastly, yes passion. Why? Because we will write a lot of content. It should be much easier when it starts with passion.

I would say, do your research on the target audience you would like to help to solve their problems. What kinds of products you would recommend or review on your website?

Also, check out the competitions. How do they serve their audiences?

Try Kyle's trick in finding affiliate programs within the niche you choose by Googling: "your niche+affiliate programs."
For example: Weight loss + affiliate programs

Here is the link to Kyle’s post about Target audience where you can find ideas for great niches. All the best,

Ferra,

Thank you! I can definitely say 'Yes' to all of those items you described and even found a wealth of affiliate programs for said niche. I even jotted out 50 ideas within the niche for different posts/articles. Guess that means it's time to develop content before finding a home for it all.

Thanks,
Shannon

Here are some resources to help you narrow down your niche if you need some help in that area. These are big picture overview, not necessarily that you are picking one the niches listed I think it is important in the beginning to have an interest in your niche, for sure. But over time, I think earning money will drive the passion.

Hope this helps. If you are not in the MMO niche, you can also use Dylan's training A lot of the concepts in here can be used for different niches. Amazon is a great resource for finding products around a particular niche.

Hi Shannon! There are criterias.:
1. If you are creating relevant content about your niche regularly
2. It is your passion and interest
3. It is something you can really earn money - because some niches have no sizable monetary possibilities.
4. Your skills in writing product reviews matter.
5. You get audience and it is on the upward trajectory.
Note: Sometimes it takes time to get audience, traffic and monetization. The best part is your perseverance and continuous improvement. Success is the only option. Do not quit.
Best regards,
Florentino

Hey there, any niche you choose is good as long as you have a genuine passion for it and would like to help people out there with your knowledge and information. And when it comes to profits, there are tons of products and affiliate programs for every niche that you can join to montize you site.

If you're still in doubt, I would recommend reading this post. Can I ask, what it is that you would like you niche to be?

Hi - you will have started with a free SiteRubix site. Possibly this one - https://bestgadget.siterubix.com/ ?

As you have now bought your own .com domain, you can either delete your free site, or just use it for practice when you are trying something new.
