Perhaps you have an image that doesn't need to be hyperlinked in any way. You can do this from within WordPress during the process of uploading it.
Here's how it's done...
Down near the "Insert Image Into Post" button you will see these settings. It's the "Link To" section you want. Hit the drop down arrow on the right of the cursor shown here. In the dropdown menu, select "None."Here's the resulting code. Notice only the second part of the code is showing.

The image is not hyperlinked nor does it have its own page that it's linked to.
Now, what if you want the image to be linked to another page on your site or anywhere else? Well, you can do that also! Just have the URL of the page you want to link it to handy...

great and detailed, to the extent that the process is easily understood and we can focus on the "reasons why". Captions under pictures can also give the heads up as to what will happen when a reader clicks on a picture...some of think better pictorially after all- if that makes sense..
