What do you think when you see the term KEYWORD?

Does it excite you or does it give you anxiety?

If it excites you, that is great...we are on the same page. If it gives you anxiety, I am going to spend some time with you here to help you get over your anxiety by SI-MP-LI-FY-ING the process of keyword research for you.

First things first though...

What is a KEYWORD?

A keyword is something that people search for. It doesn't matter what the medium is, whether it is within a Google or Bing search or within your favorite social network, people are using keywords to find stuff.

Your job as a marketer is to target these specific keywords with your targeted marketing offer. Your success as a marketer will depend on the relevance of keyword, your understanding of the audience, and the relevance of your offer.

The main issue I see is people looking at everything in terms of keywords. By this I mean, they lose sight of the fact that there is a REAL PERSON behind every keyword search. The first step is getting ranked or becoming visible within keyword searches, the second step is being able to connect with the "people" behind the search.

Within this training module I am going to walk you through the process of finding quality keywords that can get great rankings and help you understand the "logic" behind keyword selection. Really, a keyword is just a keyword unless you understand the process!

The thing is that Google Instant is not available any more. I will do so with the default Google Search platform which brings the next question : are the results as relevant as found in Google Instant?

Google Instant is still available to anyone who types a search in Google. All it is, is a feature that predicts what you're searching for and shows results as you type.

When you outline all your relevant keywords, do you go ahead writing article/post on all of them. As par taking them one after another to explain?
Reply

I believe you are building a list of keywords here that you can use to target in your posts. You don't have to use all of them. He is showing you how to find the keywords, though, that have good search volume and low competition (low hanging fruit) that you may be able to get ranked with.

Fantastic Information on Keyword Research, Kyle... I understood in detail...My doubt here is How many Keywords I'm permitted to include in an article or post? or Per Page? Is there any that kind of rules and regulations by Google? And What if I add more keywords in my article, Let's say 20-30 keywords in 1000 words article?
Reply
Paul1916 Premium
Don't do it like that!!!!
Do single posts for each and every keyword separately!!!
Reply

Oh... Sure, Sir... Thank you for your advice...
I'll follow your advice...
Reply
LindaKwas Premium
Yes, you target one key word per post, but sometimes you will get ranked for other keywords that just end up in your post naturally.
The keyword can be one word but it is usually more like a phrase. For exampe, instead of just women's shoes, the keyword might be women's pink athletic shoes or women's casual sandals.
Use the keyword in your post title, and then use it once in the first or second paragraph of your post, then you may end up including in again somewhere in your post, but do not "stuff it." Write naturally.

The website StreetArticles.com was mentioned a couple of times. I'm still a little fuzzy how it helps. Also, this article is about 5 years old. Are there other author websites that are better, e.g. ezine.com ?
Reply
BobBarr Premium
Street Articles is no longer recommended for posting content.

From Carson in 2014:
"Article Directories are not something that offer much benefit at all anymore, other than to help Google find your website when it's brand new. That said, the second you share your website at Wealthy Affiliate, Google knows about it within seconds.

Although we own StreetArticlces.com, it's of little value to people to post their content on. We suggest posting all content on your website, not on any directory."

It's so true that you can do all the keyword research and keyword targeting and still miss the "connection" step with your target reader. This step is critical. The more I educate myself on the process of content marketing and internet marketing in general, I'm learning that EVERY step along the way is critical. If you skip a step, any step along the way, you don't help people as much and thus won't earn as much money online. Thanks for this amazing tutorial!

The keyword tool is amazing!! Thanks for breaking it down. I was able to come up with a sub-niche of the topic I was interested in blogging about just by checking popularity against competing websites in google (QSR), and I'm sure it's going to be a hit. Let's see how it goes!

It made me wonder, though, has anyone in the WA community ever done extensive keyword research BEFORE they had settled on a niche and built their website? Or are you supposed to build a website first as per Course 1, Lesson 4?
Reply
trevorfenner Premium
My opinion is that you should do research, but don't miss the practice step while doing research. If you research and practice, then repeat, you'll figure out a way. If you research and don't practice, you won't get anywhere. I started a personal blog so I could practice. The better I get at doing research and creating content, the more likely I'll be able to branch out by creating niche-specific sites in the future. I hope this answer is helpful and good luck!

I have a question. How does google look at keywords? Do they look at the individual words within a phrase as the keywords or does it look at the whole phrase as one keyword?
Reply
MHainsworth Premium
It depends it will look at both really, the main keywords but also the context. For example If a searcher is asking a question Google may look for keywords expected in the answer rather than the question asked. That's why modern keyword research focuses as much on answering genuine questions or supplying quality content rather than focusing on specific individual words or phrases only.

Great Training, and I feel comfortable with the methods. I have two questions unanswered; When I have made a blogpost, with some headlines and of course related content, 1. would it be a good or bad idea to make new blogposts with each the headlines as keyword? I notice they have a tendency of being very close to other keywords related to my niche. 2. What would be the effect of deliberately using keywords as headlines for the different paragraphs(of course very similar to the main keyword of the post) ? If there is a training coming later, please give me a hint what to search for, I haven't found any yet.. In advance, thank you.
Reply
Dan-L Premium
You should always use your keywords within the paragraphs of your post or page and you can also use them as titles and in subtitles if you can. The post will tend to rank better if keywords are in them because a keyword is generally what someone is searching for.

I am still confused about the use of keywords. Once we find the keyword or long tail keywords, what does the search engine look for to rank them? The key word in the box? You use keyword in:
title
meta title
meta description
url of the post
first paragraph
somewhere in conclusions
in image alt text or in image file name or in image caption.
That will be perfectly enough.

You use keywords when you write a page or a post.

Reply

Hello Phildarst :)

I'm not aware of this box where you have to put the keyword.

The training here in WA doesn't mention anything like that. You just have to include the keyword in the title of your post/page and then once again in your first couple of paragraphs.

Your keyword can be anything related to your niche. It will be different for every post you write. You need to research keywords that have high search volume and low competition.
Example a keyword might be treating depression with herbal remedies
Your keyword research will tell you if that's a good keyword Tom use and if you could rank well for it

Remember Traffic or monthly searches over50^ and competition from other keywords with that phrase under 300. I found if i write it down that it is easier to remember. Reply
Colestock198 Premium
QSR stands for quoted search results. It is the number of websites that have the exact keyword that you typed in. It's your competition for the keyword..

SEO stands for search engine optimization. In jaaxy, it is their rating of the chances of ranking on page one of google. 100 being good odds and 0 meaning you will not likely rank on page one.

KQI is another quality indicator for the keyword. Green means go, red means NO! oh and yellow means cross the intersection if you can't stop in time. or for your keyword.... so-so quality

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, the QSR is going to be the number of results that come up from searching keyword(s) within Google (or such), right? I just used the WA Keyword tool to test the keywords "christian homeschool" and the view result link under the competition tab showed that there were 341 results. That's the QSR, right?
Reply
Michelle04 Premium
Yes, that is right. Keep in mind you don't want your QSR to be over 300, it is too much competition. :)

Thanks for the Keyword training - This information is matter of fact and easy to follow... thank you.

But I do have a question...
I used the WA keyword tool and came across a term that was a common typo and had a really low competition value but when I searched in google without the quotation, google seemed to return results of the non typo. Is it worth trying to rank?

As an example: a common typo like "how to bake a an orange and poppy cake". Lets say it returned 8 sites as direct competition. However when I type the typo into google without the quote marks it returns over a million sites (higher number is to be expected because of no quotes). But the number one site is not the same as with quotations. Is it sill worth trying to rank a typo with a large search volume and low competition when google seems to return the non typo results?

The other confusing thing is when I use the WA Keyword tool and then type the same term into google with quotes the competition is sometimes significantly different. Is this normal? WA results still reliable?

Thanks in advance.

when u use google search, if typo error n it will show correct word , therefore , the result will be based on correct wording.

However, it do show u to choose search result of the error typo search on the top of the screen, which is less sites shown.

ie. I search : make cake : 405.,000,000 result

if u search : make caake : 307,000

it show this:
About 415,000,000 results
Showing results for make cake
Search instead for make caake

I can assure u WA results r reliable.

what is the difference between article power and pcc in the WA keyword research tool and what does the number mean? Is it better the numbers be higher or lower for those two?
Reply
Jaweda2k Premium
The article power is along the lines of how good the phrase is as a title. For example:

"is competition good for kids" rates at a 10
"competitions kids" rates at a 7.6

The higher the number the better.

Reply
sasukhram Premium
Roimen, I'm not Kyle, but I am sure he will jump in here.

I don't think Kyle meant to ignore the traffic entirely. What he meant is that once there is traffic and the keyword is good in terms of less than 300 competing pages, then go ahead and look at using that keyword. Some keywords I have searched within my niche have less than 10 searches per month. I don't think those would be great keywords to try to rank for.
Reply
Kyle Premium
You want some traffic, but the focal point is getting ranked. Without rankings, traffic doesn't matter. Also, if you get ranked under 50 keywords, they can have lower to moderate traffic and it will really add up.

Hi Kyle, I wonder if I could please ask for clarification on something regarding keywords?

I'm wanting to know about using long tailed keyword phrases which include stopper words such as 'for'. I appreciate some search engines ignore them, but it's a fact that humans search using them, but are they okay in URL's?

An example might be 'black leather collars for greyhounds'.

I largely understand keywords and how to get the best out of them now (totally thanks to you), but can't find an obvious answer to this anywhere - can you clear this one up 'for' me?

I'll say now I'm inclined to think its fine because that is as people type the query...

Thanking you in advance

Meggy
Reply
Kyle Premium
Your content will always want to target the keyword that makes sense. You are also competing with the keyword that makes sense. In this example, you would want to get the traffic and competition data for:

black leather collars for greyhounds

However, people will use Google instant and type in:

black leather collars greyhounds

When you target the first term, you are naturally targeting the second term. The worst thing you can do is fall in the trap of targeting search terms that don't make sense (like the second one). You ALWAYS want to target the keyword that makes sense because you are going to be creating content and this needs to make sense to your audience.

If you rank for ONE, you will almost always rank for both.

Reply

Far too broad Robert. I would definitely dig down further and find a longer tailed keyword with affiliate marketing in it, but the broad keyword I wouldn't suggest targeting. If you target a longer tailed keyword with "affilaite marketing" in it, you will also naturally be targeting every keyword within the make up of it.

how to start an affiliate marketing business

Would also target:

Gee I hope that makes sense :-/
Reply
Kyle Premium
I tend to use one keyword per article/page as my main theme, but if I can naturally tie in very relevant headings (that separate the content in the given article), I will do that. The last thing you want to do is try to stuff a bunch of keywords into your content, it will be unnatural and ineffective.
Reply
Willow Tech Premium
Should that keyword be more than once? If so, how many times in a 500 word article?
Reply
Kyle Premium
It should be in the title of your article (somewhere) and maybe within the first paragraph. Then write naturally, if it takes place again that is fine, but the key is to write natural and with the purpose of your actual article.

The more you focus on keyword density, the mroe awkward the article becomes and the more Google is going to think you are keyword stuffing.

Street articles is another way to get your ideas on the web and for people to find your website by writing quality content that people want to read. Quality articles linked to your site and online profile are just another way to get found and boost your rankings in search engines. You may want to go through the training again as I had to do to grasp all of the concepts that are relayed in this site. Reply
Kyle Premium
Yes, QSR of 0 means that you have no competition. I usually double check any keyword with a QSR in Google by doing a manual quoted search just to make sure. :)
Reply
ramccracken Premium
the lowest qsr is one that you will target because the content is contained in a lot less pages and easier to get ranked high on the subject. you also want to pay attention to how many people are visiting the site

Monthly searches should not be low, but they can be. You want your QSR to be below 300, and your monthly searches to be above 50. More searches is better.

Thanks for reply Willow Tech & Kyle :-) So is the criteria for a website to rank first is with high keywords? and quality of content (incl. keywords)? or more other criteria?
Reply
Kyle Premium
Low competition keywords = easier to rank. I usually focus on these keywords and over time you will have a ton of traffic. Much better to work this way than to focus on high competition, high traffic keywords which are much more difficult to rank under.
Reply
michA3LMj Premium
If a keyword has QSR of 100, how does using the keyword in my website content make my website be in the first position of the 100 competing page?
Reply
Willow Tech Premium
QSR is a guide for choosing keywords. You will have add articles constantly with various keywords and keep your visitors engaged.
Reply
Kyle Premium
QSR = competing pages in Google. The lower this number, the better and the easier it will be to rank under these keywords. You can definitely make #1 position with keywords under 300, the closer to zero the easier. Remember though, not everything you create will rank awesome, so write in volume.

Don't live with a high QSR, it should be below 300 for your to consider the keyword. After you have a list of your keywords, you want to build out your content. One page or post per keyword with the focus being on the reader and writing an interesting and engaging article.

Yes, I know, I've searched for the close button in all areas of that window, but there isn't one. I also did sign up as a Premium member May 26. What's happening with the QSR button is that it will work on anything above that "Upgrade Now" window, but won't work on anything below it.

That is because as a free member of Jaaxy, you only have access to the first 10 results. If you click anything below that, it will pop up the upgrade button. If you want full results you have to upgrade to either a Pro membership or an Enterprise membership.

You also have access to the keyword tool here at WA within your premium membership.

Here is Kyle's reply to the same question. It was posted earlier. Hope it helps!

"The Competition (View Result...QSR within Jaaxy) should be below 400, the closer to 0, the better.

You want your keyword to make sense as you are going to be creating content targeting this keyword. It will be very awkward if you choose a keyword that doesn't make sense.

You want the keyword to get SOME traffic. Competition is the first thing I am concerned with, then I look at traffic. I am for keywords over 50 searches monthly, but on occasion I will choose keywords with a little less if they make sense to my campaign."
Reply
Willow Tech Premium
If you use Keyword tool at WA you can get QSR by clicking "View Result". That click will take you to Google Search Page and you will see the keyword in quote in the google search box. Look the result like " # of # ".at the start of the page at google.

you know how you created 25 keywords for the parrot niche. To work through them, do you have to create an individual page or article for each of these keywords, or I am understanding this wrong. Please explain?
Reply

If you are going to use Wordpress you need to have a clear conception about page and post. In wordpress a static page is created to put something that does not change much over time. For example Contact Us, About Us, FAQ page etc. A blog usually contains articles or posts and showed in a blog page. As you are updating or adding blogs the latest content comes first. You include the keywords in your blog according to the topic.
Reply
Hi, I used to be part of Suite101, writing about health, lifestyle and other stuff. It is actually there that I began using keywords and I realized how they worked. WA gave me much in-depth knowledge regarding the numbers, the competition etc. But with regards to your question, I would use a single keyword and a set of keyword phrases of the same root keyword in a single article, depending on the articles length, I've come across the phrase "keyword density" before, and I don't know much about it exactly only that we should not put too much keywords on a single article.
Reply
Willow Tech Premium
AnneYu, I would not go for article with keyword density now.

Density is measured by a percentage of the total words in an article. Like you need to stuff a keyword in a number of time like 20% of 500 words in an article. Google is now looking for quality articles. So I would avoid writing this way.

But many clients are still in the ancient age and asking for stuffed articles. Stuffed articles never go naturally.
Reply
You're definitely right Willow Tech and I quote myself : " I don't know much about it exactly (Keyword Density) only that we should NOT put too much keywords on a single article."

Because after the tutorial, I imagine a lot of us would probably get too excited about keywords and stuff too much on a single article.

With regards to content creation, it goes without saying that the top goal is to make quality content. Content is still King. :) Thanks Willow Tech!

Just wondering when you are going to have an affiliate program for jaaxy, seems like you may miss out on a boat load of more traffic from Wa members that might write something about the keyword tool. Just saying.

Kyle, you added something here in the keyword training, so I just want to clarify. Here is what you said...

Now that I have my list of keywords, I would start working my way through these by either creating a page on my "parrot" website or writing articles and submitting them to an authoring site like StreetArticles.com. These all fit the following criteria, which is optimal for obtaining SEO rankings:

(1) Under 400 QSR (competing pages in Google)
(2) At least 50 clicks per month traffic"

You mention picking keyword phrases that are under (1) 400 QSR and (2) that get at least 50 clicks per month traffic. Correct me if I am wrong but earlier you said that we should pick search terms that are under 400 QSR and that get at least 40 searches a month, not necessarily click throughs. So If I understand this right you added a new element here, but it is a bit confusing because it seems to contradict the earlier training.

Please help me understand the sudden shift in strategy. Thanks.

You don't no click-throughs until you get ranked. You are aiming for this amount of traffic, that is the ideal number. There is no such metric for click-throughs as there is only one way to determine this, getting ranked!

So which is more important? The traffic # or the QSR? Do you think it is worth using the keyword which has low traffic but high QSR?

Focusing on getting keywords with a QSR that is below 400 and with at least 40 searches or more will make it easier to get your web pages/articles to rank in the search engines.

I am a little confused. Once I find my keywords where to I place them?

If you are writing a blog you would place them in the title of your blog, in the body of the post. You would also want to use them in headings 1-6. You don't necessarily have to use all 6 headings but use a different keyword phrase or variation in each heading. You would also need to use the keywords in your META Tags. e.g., META Title, META Description and META Keywords. You can use them to name your images with and in the ALT tag as well. I know this is a bit complex, but you will get the hang of it!

I have a question about the WA keyword search tool. When I search my keyword and then click on View Results to see the Google results, it shows 414 results and the last page of the search results. It mentions on the bottom that they are omitting similar results and that they are giving me the most relevant results. Then when I click on any other search results page, the results number jumps to 96,300! I'm wondering why two different results numbers and which one I should believe? Thanks for the help.

Because you have to go to the last page to get the accurate result. Google no longer gives you the result if you just do a straight up "quoted" search (their numbers are based on broad) and the only way to capture this data is by going to the very last page of Google. Hope this clarifies.

I'm a little confused. I was using WA's keyword search and I'm not sure what numbers I should be paying attention to for each keyword. So do I want to go for the words that have the least or most amount of traffic? I didn't want to sign up for the free trial at Jaaxy yet and use all my searches trying to figure things out.

The Competition (View Result...QSR within Jaaxy) should be below 400, the closer to 0, the better.

You want your keyword to make sense as you are going to be creating content targeting this keyword. It will be very awkward if you choose a keyword that doesn't make sense.

You want the keyword to get SOME traffic. Competition is the first thing I am concerned with, then I look at traffic. I am for keywords over 50 searches monthly, but on occasion I will choose keywords with a little less if they make sense to my campaign.

ok I understand keywords but what if my domain has no words in it for people to know what i am promoting. Wondrouspower. another thing ... Say most of us are promoting affiliate marketing and we are all doing a keyword search aren't we all going to have the same keywords. Im a bit confused how I can be found through a search when so many are doing it

That is fine, your domain should be brandable and it does not need to contain keywords. I typically choose domains that are not keyword rich for my authority sites because I would rather have something that is memorable and interesting to my audience.

How the estimated traffic reflected from the data? What should we evaluate "Monthly Searches" VS "Estimated Traffic?
Reply

I look at monthly searches, Estimated traffic is based on if you make the top 3 rankings in the search engines, but monthly traffic should be your focus.
