Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Shawn's tutorials!

I hope the new year is finding you all well and healthy!

This tutorial is going to cover using the WPTouch mobile plug in to convert most non responsive themes into mobile friendly and tablet friendly displays.

Many themes brag they are responsive but after downloading and installing them you realize only the paid versions are actually responsive.

I learned of this with one of my sites, www.justbuilditnow.com yesterday thanks to a fellow WA member who is having the same issues with his site and having way too many custom settings on this theme already in place, it is the flexability 3 theme by the way, I had to figure out how to make this work.

Thus, here we go!

But first we must determine if your site is mobile friendly or not.

Go to Mobile-friendly test and find out how your site rates.

If you find your site is not mobile friendly continue with this tutorial :)

Hi Shawn thanks for this, very helpful. However the menu and search feature on my mobile site doesn't seem to work for me? Is that a pro feature? Thanks.

Thanks great post, I have tested and few of my sites found some are mobile friendly one is not
http://kiwicruiser.cruisesalefinder.co.nz/aboutus.html is mobile friendly but...
www.kiwicruiser.com is not - so what do I do now?

meanwhile www.tepukebackpackers.com is mobile friendly and now I am stuck trying to use site Comments... and working towards driving traffic and monetizing it... previous to this site I had another www.hairyberrynz.com via Joomla, (not mobile friendly) and because it has been around 10 years or so most people searching land on that site - is there anyway I can re-direct the trafic to the new site?

sorry probably too many questions for this post... cheers Tracey

Hi Tracey.. I tested your http://kiwicruiser.com site and it is in fact mobile friendly. It is a responsive site.

As far as the Joomla site, If you already have steady traffic to that site I would not really re-direct. You can simply change your joomla template or theme to a responsive one or possibly use this I found in search. http://extensions.joomla.org/extension/responsivizer

Thanks for that, Yes the Kiwicruiser site I am in the process of changing themes and hoping this resolves the responsiveness but not tested it so Thank you ...

As for the Joomla site - I've not been able to really get in and apply changes easily - I will take note of your link and appreciate the support and info... but have doubts that I can do it. eventually I was thinking of dropping that site - but just hoping to leverage the trafic - at lease for now. cheers Tracey

thankyou shawn,i actually had to change all the pictures today as i taken them from google images without filtering,it looked better this morning but got a little worried about copyright laws after learning the filter function.
Im glad you like my site and will keep the theme now you said that.
Will i need to remove these pictures from my media in wordpress too?
As they are showing up as mine in google search thru WA
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
Yes, you should probably remove them completely.

I so appreciate that you put this simple training up for all of us.

The last week or so, I started noticing people commenting on mobile friendly, etc. I never really thought about it because I "thought" that my site looked okay on my smartphone.

Read other posts about how Google can penalize sites for this, etc. Uggh.....what else is new.

Did the analyzer test and realized that it was not mobile friendly. I thought it was going to be a pain in the behind to fix it, until I found your training.

Wow! A simple plugin and 3 minutes later, my site is now mobile friendly and passed the test. Thanks for this training! :)

Defiantly, I know and see many local business wordpress sites that aren't responsive, this could be an easy, foot in the door type option.

Hm. Something about my experiences.
Maybe I don't understand the term mobile friendly very good but I have next experience with plugin "WPTouch mobile plugin" and "Mobile-friendly test":
1.) I did the test on http://dv-vinjivrh-belacerkev.com
2.) Result was negative
3.) Although visually it was O.K. for my taste. I did the test on my samsung.
4.) However I installed plugin
5.) 'Everything' was wrong after installation
6.) Of course I immediately deactivated plugin. Everything is O.K. again

Now I'm a little confused but I'll survive. End is good everything is good. :)

The plug in uses a completely different theme for the mobile version and maybe it will not work with your theme.
Glad all is well :)
