OK, not going to get super nuts on this topic because I don't want to reiterate something that has already been explained here at WA in great detail.
Here is how it works though.
YOU, the article marketer, write articles...submit them to the directory of your choice (I give a list below)...and then link to your WordPress blog within them.
This is very powerful for two reasons.
(1) Article directories get ranked quick. You can get your article ranked very quickly with article directories as you assume their PageRank when you submit to them. People read your article and then come to your WordPress site through the links that you have within your article. This equates to some good traffic to your blog.
Here is a list of article directories that get rankings in Google very quick:
(2) Some article directories are "do follow". This means that you get a one way link each time you write an article and drop your website link. This will improve your PageRank and your overall rankings within the search engines. Here is a list of "do follow" sites.

*Note: If a site is "no follow" (like Squidoo.com), they are basically telling Google not to follow your link, thus not giving you credit. They have their reasons for doing this as it can negatively affect their PageRank. Borrow the one way links where you can.
The key to article marketing success with your blog comes down to the flow of relevance. It should look like this:
YOUR ARTICLE links to -> YOUR RELEVANT LANDING PAGE/POST ON YOUR SITE points to -> A RELEVANT PROMO/OFFER
