One of the things I love most about Yoast is the simplicity of the setup. In this first image, if you already have Yoast installed and activated, you will first click on XML Sitemaps under the Yoast SEO dashboard. Then, if not turned on by default, enable the XML sitemap functionality. Once you have enabled the functionality. Click Save.

On the next page we will generate a sitemap.

Are you getting a 404 error? What exactly does the external webpage say?

Try this:
To correct the issue...

1. Go to WordPress Dashboard >> SEO >> XML Sitemap

2. Uncheck the "Check this box to enable XML sitemap functionality" box

3. Click "Save Settings"

4. Check the "Check this box to enable XML sitemap functionality" box again

5. Click "Save Settings"

6. Click the "You can find your XML Sitemap here:" button.
Hopefully, your sitemap will appear in a new tab without the 404 page not found error

Seems like you have to reset the XML Sitemap. Hope this helps.
