Although I am not going to run through the entire process of “how SEO works”, I am going to explain how the local marketing aspect of SEO. I also want to explain how you can obtain high rankings within Google with relative ease.

Before I get started, I want to show you visually how Google represents“local” content within their first page results. Here is what it looks like when I type “vancouver veterinary clinic"

You can see in the YELLOW, the paid ads. Those are through Google Adwords. In the BLUE, we have the natural search rankings…the rankings in which we are going for. And below these, are the Google Places which are essentially Google’s internal business listings (as a business you can get listed in there with some work), and then in GREEN,

You cannot see them, but there are also more natural search rankings below the last Google Places listings (4 more on the first page). As a local SEO marketer, these are the rankings you are going for. Depending on the competition (the lower the better), you are going to be able to get your content ranked within the Local SEO Rankings without a ton of work.

Here are 5 different types of content that you can create to get ranked:

(1) Write an article and submit to an author site (like StreetArticles.com)
(2) Write content on your relevant website (that you own)
(3) Write content on a free website creator that gets rankings (tumblr.com, wordpress.org, blogger.com)
(4) Create a video and submit to YouTube
(5) Create social content withing Google +, Facebook Groups, etc.

If I were to write a blog post on my website (that was related to veterinary) or write an article and submit it to a site like Street Articles, I could attain 1st page rankings rather easily here for most of the keywords I found. I am competing with very few sites and a targeted content piece would likely float page one under any of these terms with relative ease.

Once you are ranked, you have power within the local market. Keywords are all at the core of the success.

Great tutorial Kyle! Really simplified the thought process here.

I am thinking of picking a vet in a city near me, submit a SA, get it ranked on page 1 referring their business as the go to business and then e mailing or writing them a letter letting them know I did this and that I could do more for them if they are interested. Writing the article is a small investment with big possibilities.

Yeah, this can definitely be done. Buy my links within the following article. I am only charging "$xx" per link per month...or you can buy the positioning outright for "$xx". This could definitely work if you can get in touch with the local companies and prove the rankings and the associate value (traffic and leads) to them.

Awesome Mike, let me know if you do have any questions. This technique works great if you have no local clients, you find the keywords first and then get the rankings...then seek out the local clients. That works well because at that point you have something to show them!
