And here are a few keywords that meet my “competition” criteria by typing in vancouver vets.

Then I may want to target some of the different regions in the Greater Vancouver Area (you can do some research to uncover these or if you are from the location, it will be easy to come up with the regions in your area).

kitsilano veterinarians
surrey veterinarians
richmond veterinarians
maple ridge veterinarians
chilliwack veterinarians
east vancouver veterinarians
west vancouver veterinarians
white rock veterinarians

I have uncovered a large amount of potential local keywords within initial searches. The ultimate mix is high traffic, low competition. However, the very first metric I always look at is competition. Jaaxy is the only keyword tool that provides this data point with efficiency..the only other way to get at this piece of data is to do a keywords search in "quotes" and click through to the last page.

Again, I aim for less than 400 QSR, the closer the ZERO the better. Lot’s to choose from within my few initial searches.

I typically aim for keywords with some traffic. Note that Jaaxy provides much more realistic data than other keyword research tools and even Google’s keyword tool because it uses data from all search engines. It then processes this data through the “traffic accuracy algorithm” to give you more realistic data.

Anyways, I try to aim for more than 50 searches. My motto is that it is “better to be ranked first page under a keyword with very little traffic, than 2nd page under a keyword with lots of traffic”. Therefore, competition should be the first metric you look at when doing keyword research, then traffic. Not the other way around.

Don’t overlook keywords that get very little traffic though. For example, you will come across keywords that get very little searches per month. Let's take a keyword that gets only 32 clicks (like my "north vancouver veterinarians").

But say you get a #1 ranking in Google and your listing gets 50% of those searches (16 searches per month). This would also be valuable to a veterinarian as every client they get averages to THOUSDANDS of dollars. If this one keyword only gets them a couple leads per month, this keyword alone could equate to $50,000+ in business per year. HUGE value!

I am thinking of picking a vet in a city near me, submit a SA, get it ranked on page 1 referring their business as the go to business and then e mailing or writing them a letter letting them know I did this and that I could do more for them if they are interested. Writing the article is a small investment with big possibilities.

Yeah, this can definitely be done. Buy my links within the following article. I am only charging "$xx" per link per month...or you can buy the positioning outright for "$xx". This could definitely work if you can get in touch with the local companies and prove the rankings and the associate value (traffic and leads) to them.

Awesome Mike, let me know if you do have any questions. This technique works great if you have no local clients, you find the keywords first and then get the rankings...then seek out the local clients. That works well because at that point you have something to show them!
