You have now finally access your WordPress account. What you are seeing right now is the WordPress Dashboard where you will start working every time you create, modify and publish your contents. This is where you organize the structure and the contents of your website.

Let's explore it and get familiar with what it's all about. The WordPress Dashboard acts like our kitchen where we will cook all the dishes here that we are going to serve to our guests.

Here, you will find two panels, the left panel is called the Main Navigation Menu, wherein you will find useful menus for building your website, and the Top Panel is called the Toolbar.

The large white panel is called the Work Area where you do all the tasks you want on your website with the selected menu you choose on the main navigation menu.

The Main Navigation Menu consists of the following tools:

  • Dashboard
  • Post
  • Media
  • Pages
  • Comments
  • Appearance
  • Plugins
  • Users
  • Tools
  • Settings
  • Collapse menu

A new menu will be added onto this panel when you add and activate a new WordPress Plugin that you want to use on your website. We will talk more about Plugins on Lesson 12 on this training.

The Toolbar is also called Admin Bar, it consists of the following items below:

  • About WordPress
  • Home / Your Website Link
  • Comments
  • Shortcut link to Add Post, Media, Page and User
  • Plug-ins
  • Notification of updates
  • Howdy, [user]

The Work Area is the place where you will write your articles either by posts or pages, the place where you will arrange the content of your website, where you will modify and edit the construction of your website. This serves as your playground for your website.

Tasks 0/2 completed
1. Click each item on main navigation menu and get familiar with its content.
2. Edit your Profile by clicking the Edit My Profile on your name at the Admin bar.

I created a second page. When I went to the different pages, and used the parent button - the pages are switched around. Is it supposed to be like that?

No, I have not created a sub-page yet as I do not have enough details to do that. I need specifics and if it's too simple - it doesn't have enough information. I've read the directions a bunch of times and I still don't get it.

Thanks Carl for letting me know this, I stand corrected.

When importing the back-up files (.xml) start importing the "All Content" file. Tutorial updated now.

The "Media" file back-up is for emergency purposes only if in case the "All Media" file didn't show the media / pictures on your posts or pages. So, to make sure of that, you can import the "Media" file after importing the "All Content" file.

Thanks for having this tutorial, I'm glad it's becoming useful to my fellow members here.
