Wordpress makes it so easy to just throw up a website fast. If you have never dealt with websites before, there are going to be times when you will need to go into the code and be able to make some changes. You can adjust things on your Posts to look the way you want.
This lesson is all about HTML. HTML or Hyper Text Markup Language is the language that tells the browser how to render the pages. In the good ole' days, webpages had to be built from scratch. We didn't have Wordpress to build our sites with.
We are going to build a page from scratch using the same page for each lesson and just adding on to it. By the end of the lesson, you should know enough that if you do have to go into the code, you can make the adjustments you need.
There are places on the web that are very reliable sources for HTML. One of the best ones is w3schools. They have been around forever and offer a lot of examples of different code.
Building our First Page Structure
There is something that is common with every single webpage. They all contain a Basic Structure. Here is an example:
<HTML>
<Head>
</Head>
<Body>
</Body>
That's it! Are you surprised? The basic structure is very easy. Then you can start adding other elements or tags to it. Some tags will go in the <head> section and some will go in the <Body> section.
The <head> section is used mostly by the browser and crawlers to gain information about the page.
The <body> is what you see on the webpage when you open it in the browser.
To create your own basic webpage, you are going to use notepad. Open notepad and type in what is listed as the basic structure and then Click on Save As. In the File Name box type "MyPage.HTML" You have to make sure you include the quotes.
The quotes tell notepad to change the ending of the text file from .txt to .html.
Once you have it saved, you can double click it and it should open up as a blank page in your web browser. If you don't wan a blank screen, try typing in "This is a Test" just below the <body> section. It should look like this instead:
<HTML>
<Head>
</Head>
<Body>
This is a test
</Body>
In the next section we are going to look at the <head> area and the things we can add into it.
