The first thing you should do before writing articles... is select a good keyword that:

  • Is relevant to your product
  • Have enough traffic
  • Low competitors in Google

You can easily evaluate if a keyword is relevant to your product, because most of the time it is obvious that if you sell nike blue shoes, you won't select the keyword "cell phones ringtones", so this step is easy. The second one is up to you, but we recommend a keyword with enough traffic, like 3000 searches per month. Now, how do you evaluate the competition in Google? lets go!

We will take a sample keyword... right? maintenance software equipment management.

You find there is not articles written at ezinearticles.com for this keyword, good... then you type it at Google with quotes around it, to investigate competitors. You need low competition, but how much is low? here at WA is recommended about 5,000 results in quotes, so take that number. Also evaluate that the average Page Rank for top 5 pages is below 3. The results are bellow 5,000 .. are we almost done? no... I don't think so.

Evaluating the hidden competitors for profit

Lets imagine that you write an article and publish it at some important directories, you wait and wait some weeks and nothing happens for you to see the article in the first page of Google. Do you want to know what might happen to you in this keyword research journey? Lets go.

When your potential customers type your lovely keyword at Google they types without quotes..right? they type:

maintenance software equipment management

What does Google do to show the results? Google shows results for any combination of those words!! and within those combination you might have very strong competitors that you did not notice before. E.G.

Google shows results for pages that are optimized for:

  • Maintenance software ( Average page rank 6)
  • Maintenance Software equipment (Average page rank 4)
  • Maintenance equipment (Average page rank 4)
  • Maintenance management (Average page rank 5)
  • Maintenance equipment management (Average page rank 3)
  • Maintenance software equipment management (Average page rank 1)

Do you see the page rank for some of those combination??? very strong!.. So ok... now what to do about it?

The step you won't forget since now

What should you do? besides typing the keyword in quotes to evaluate competitors at Google, also type the same keyword but without quotes and evaluate the results, this time you won't evaluate the number of results, because it will be very very high, what you need to evaluate is how strong are the top 5 pages, how?

  • See their page rank
  • See how many links they have

Try to fight competitors with page rank below 3.

When you do this additional step you will know the real competitors and will have a better change to get on page one of Google faster than ever.

In Brief

  • Select a relevant keyword to your product
  • Type the keyword in quotes in Google
  • Evaluate number of competitors and page rank average
  • Type the keyword without quotes in Google
  • Evaluate page rank average
  • If everything is ok... go and write articles around it.

I Hope it helps. See you all.

Good info about "hidden competitors." Question though: Why would a site with a page-rank of 3 rank higher than one with a rank of 6? In fact, why would several sites with a lower page-rank rank higher?
