Now one might think that adding more words to an already lengthy long tail keyword doesn't make much sense but you have to remember this. A keyword is what people type into the search engines when looking for answers. What do the majority of people type into the search engines? They type in a question. This is why most long tail keywords are questions and why long tail keywords make up over 70% of all search queries and convert the most!

So as you can see in the image above, I added the words "what is" in front of the long tail keyword, "the best free keyword research tool" now making it a question. Again you can see that none of the numbers have changed, and I explain why near the end of this page.

Now when I go to check the Competition number of this long tail keyword question, I see in the image below that it has dropped from 78 to 14! So this is the keyword I am going to use! It has a FAR BETTER chance at getting me on to Google Page 1 than the keyword at the very beginning with the monthly Searches of 626.

Because I have been doing this for about 4 years, I would normally just research the long tail keyword question straight away. But for the sake of this tutorial I broke it down into steps so you could get a better understanding of how keyword research works and while using the WA Keyword Tool. First off "free keyword research tool" is somewhat too board a long tail keyword, if there is such a thing. I believe that there is because long tail keywords have been in demand for a couple of years now. Basically any keyword that is 3 or more words long is considered long tail. But as SEO has evolved within the past couple of years, the longer the keyword the better the results.

Now as for the three long tail keywords that did not have their monthly Searches, Traffic, Article Power, or PPC Power change, the reason is that they all stem from or are contained within the keyword "what is the best free keyword research tool." So if you were going to do a post on a free keyword research tool, which keyword above would you choose?

ARTICLE POWER = This is basically telling you how well your pages and posts will possibly rank. Though this is an estimated result with 10 being the best the Article Power can be, I only use it when I need to make a decision on a keyword I am not 100% sure on, which is about 25% of my keyword research.

PPC POWER = Basically the same as Article Power but used only for PPC and Paid Advertisements, which is something many of us don't do.

DIG = Let us say you found a keyword that looks like you may want to use it, you then click on the "Dig" link and another new search will begin based around that new keyword.
