QUESTION ABOUT DIFFERING KEYWORD TOOL RESULTS:

Our Keyword Research Steps:
- Found 'HOW BEGINNERS MAKE MONEY ONLINE' in LowHanging list (not exact wording!)
- 'Traffic' = 862
- 'Competing Pages' = 5

QUESTION:
When you look at the WA Keyword Tool + Jaaxy 'HOW BEGINNERS MAKE MONEY ONLINE' the results are:
- 'Traffic' = 11
- *'Competition' = 29
(*Listed as 'Competition', not 'Competing Pages' -- is this the same thing?)

We are wondering why the results shown in the keyword tools are different from the results shown in the Low Hanging list?

In other words...

Why does the Low Hanging list show this:
- 'Traffic' = 862
- 'Competing Pages' = 5
and the WA Keyword Tool + Jaaxy show this:
'Traffic' = 11
'Competition' = 29

Thank you to anyone who can help!

Hi - the best advice i can give you is :
At the start don't worry about the number of searches or the other numbers - look for keywords that have low competition (qsr) don't go for one which have 0 but target below 30.
Why is this - well you will not get much organic traffivc for about 6 months - if you do it will be due to the fact that your site is taking off. But don't rely on this, instead concentrate on having a plan on what your site will look like in 6 moths and aim for it, target people on forums and social media and get responses, show google that your site is worth ranking.
So go for the low qsr keywords, look at the traffic but don't rely on getting anywhere near thisat te start.
Goodl luck with your online journey

What period of time does the historical keyword search cover? Per day/ per month/ per year? What is the measurement of time?
Reply
jmartens777 Premium
I think if you're talking about the Keyword tool, the amount of searches has to deal with the amount searched in a month.
Reply

Thank you. I was indeed looking for the 'time unit' of measurement and so it would seem that the figures are 'per month'. Much appreciated!

The keyword is essential to use smart. Thanks for your detailed experience sharing. I want to ask a further question if the searches are very high to above 10,000 or even 20,000, but the QSR is very lower than 50, is it still good to us? I just meet some of these keywords, I am not sure about the higher searches number.

Thanks a lot.
Rebecca

Yes the lower the QSR (competition) the better traffic you get. i am not sure about the keywords hit being higher at that much of a hit, but QSR the lesser the better.
Hope that answers your question.

Hey Dom. ....can you explain what the "article power"and "ppc" power mean in a little more detail? ? Are we looking for a high number...or low one??

I am trying to get a handle on how exactly I want to structure my site. We have a BBQ page on Facebook with 800 followers...and 89 5star reviews. We use a BBQ SMOKER and all our food is our own recipes...so our site will be on BBQ...but there are alot of keywords that deal with BARBECUE as a keyword...QSR=400

I have an. Idea..... ...but when I look at a certain keyword I get a QSR=2...and traffic and searches <10...??? ...probably not a good keyword??
Reply
DomW Premium
I wouldn't pay too much attention to those metrics, but article power and ppc power basically refer to how easy it would be to rank an article for that (higher number is better) or how easy paid traffic is. However, this was back when article marketing directories were useful, so I don't pay attention to the scores now.

You should go for how to articles, "best" articles, and review articles, for example "best bbq under $200" or something like that.

DomW,
I am curious as to why you received 71,565 Searches for "making money" and when I tried the same "making money" keyword only received 3,794 Searches. It is hard to believe that since the time that you posted this tutorial the search for "making money" has dropped by 65,000K searches. How reliable is the WA keyword search tool compared to Google's KeywordPlanner?
Reply
feigner Premium
jairo - isn't this how times have changed?
people now search differently and it highlights the fact that what you targetted in 2012 is not as highly searched as now.
you will need to keep working on your site and updating your information.
check the keyword tool against others - it doesn't differ that much.
just remember that your keyword searches are just a guideline not absolute, the absolute numbers may be above or below this.
good luck with your searches

Hey Dom I have a question about ranking

Many of my posts are ranked #1 on google and yet, don't get the estimated traffic... far from it. Do you know why there is such a big difference between jaaxy/wa keyword research tool and my actual traffic for those particular keywords?

I have verified my ranking with jaaxy site rank tool and in incognito mode as well

I'm just a bit confused as to why, being #1 for many keywords that have sometimes over 1000 of traffic a month, I only get 89 visitors or so

Thanks for the help! =)

Keyword volume is an average and it changes, it could be possible that this keyword isn't as popular as it was before. It could also be that your click-through rate is not very high.

Go into Google Webmaster Tools or Google Analytics and you should be able to see how many impressions you are getting for those keywords, and how many people from those are clicking through to your site.

hi JessieQu,

Reply
JessieQu Premium
Google translate has a horrible accuracy rate. I used to do professional translation. Amongst the top free translating sites, Bing probably has the best translation and that accuracy is probably around 60% for large text. I'm looking to see if I can find a way to get keywords for my niche in Chinese since I'm going to be writing my site in Chinese as well.
Reply
TonyMonzon Premium
hi JessieQu,
I didn't know about the accuracy rate. I guess I will be giving BING a try. Although Google translator has been working great for me.
Reply
JessieQu Premium
It depends on what you use it for and what accuracy rate you expect. For simple blogging that doesn't have too much extravagant terms or field specific terminologies, they work great. That being said, I used to translate legal documents, language textbooks, business contracts, and other very complicated things, so they were not up to the task. And since I do write in Chinese, there is no need to use a translator program. Just trying to figure out where to find keywords to make it populate on google, bing, and yahoo. :) thanks for the idea though

Say I just did this example search. The search number is only 435 but competition indicates 284 pages. Will this be a good enough niche for a beginner?

I have also tried one topic of great interest and both search and traffic showed "<10". If that's the case, should I completely forget about that keyword?

So you would like to know if because this key word shows on page 43 of this search is it a good key word to use. Or does that show it is a weak key word. I do not think that it matters. Only how often the key word is searched for and how many other pages you need to compete with for this key word. And then the Article power number and the PPC Power number indicated the strength of the websites that contain that key word. So what he is say in this article is that because of the training we are receiving here we have the ability to get the key word ranked at page 1. The number of searches tell us if there is interest in that key word. If there is a lot of interest in that key word and it will bring them to our site it will be our content that will keep them there. Does this help. You have actually helped me here because I had to really stop and think 1 about what you really wanted to know and 2 what this information was really telling me. So thank you for asking this question. Robin

Sorry I could not get back to you earlier than this. Today was a Birthday party at my house and I had family over. It was a really nice day.
In answer to your question if the key word meets the parameters mentioned in the article then it is a good key word to try. But that alone will not make your article rank. More is going to be taught to us about getting our article to rank. All of that in addition to the parameters mentioned help to rank our page. Good content, writing content on a regular basis, and content helpful to our user all play a part in getting a web page to rank. So I guess what I am trying to say is there is no way to know for sure how a key word is ranked. Part of it is seeing how many people are interested in that key word and your content. Another part is making sure that your article description that shows in the search results is attractive enough to make a visitor click on it and visit your page. That is part of the set up of our website and is going to be taught in a lesson. There are more articles in the classroom that talk about keywords and SEO that you can read.
Start at the main WA page by clicking on the "Activity Dashboard"
Then Click on class room. Then in the box at the top it says "need help ? Ask your question here" This will bring up a list of all the articles or blogs that contain the "keyword"
You can also post a question by scrolling down to the bottom of the page typing in your question and hitting the submit button. This will post the question to the community and someone will answer it.

I think for now that we should go on with the lessons and this is going to be clearer to us as we move along. There is a lot of information to absorb and it is going to click for us soon. There is also an article about "Low Hanging Fruit" that Kyle authored and I know that he has another training in addition to the training in the bootcamp where he talks more about key words.

Looking at the search results that come up around that key word could give you some insight also. Mostly by seeing what the sites are and if they appear to be quality sites. If the content is not good for those sights and you write better content then you will have a good chance of a good ranking. But you can over analyze and then move into a paralysis by over analyzing, and it is better to just do your best to follow the numbers in the article and just write. The more you write the better you will get at choosing keywords. Some of this is going to come with just the experience of doing it.

Thank you for writing back to me and I hope that I have been some help to you. I will look for you in the bootcamp discussion forums. Best wisher. Robin.

Hi.just wanna ask.just focus on search results but page number never mind?in your above example shows page 43.what's the chance in this case to rank your keyword in page 1or2?confused .
Reply
Labman Premium
There are 10 results per page so page 43 should have 430 results for this key term (Actually 412). The number is somewhat high. Try to stay under 400 maximum and 200 is better. This is a measure of the number of sites that you will compete with for the term.

You only need to beat the ones on the first page not all of them. If you have authority for the site you are creating, and follow the techniques taught here, your site will pop to the top quite readily.

This was a most fascinating read, thanks DomW for writing it. :) To be honest, I found out I enjoy writing about content than focusing my attention on keywords. But, my question to you is: for each Post and Page we come up with on our website, is it best to place 3 keywords that are described in our content? For example, I used the following keywords within my Domain Supermarket Article Page about NameCheap.com namecheap, domain name, whois guard.

Thanking you,
~Angel
Reply
DomW Premium
Keywords are just words. Technically everything you put on the page is a keyword. If you are writing an article about namecheap, it's only natural that something like whoisguard and domain name would appear in the article. In fact, you SHOULD put them in, because it'd weird to talk about namecheap without mentioning the other stuff no?

The thing is though, in order to rank for a keyword, you'll want to have it as part of the title and URL, which isn't possible to do with multiple keywords (except in some instances).

Let's face it, you're never going to rank for 'Whois guard' unless the article is purely focusing on this keyword, and even then it would be tough.

Really helpful thanks Dom. When researching keywords are you looking for words for your site name to rank your site. Or do you get new keywords for each post or a page you make on your site. Or maybe both

What is the difference in between using the WA keyword tool or the ones from google or even jaaxy?
is there any advantage?
Reply
pribs Premium
The WA keyword tool will get the job done, but it's more basic and doesn't provide as much insight and data points concerning competition and search volume. Google's Keyword Planner is a tool that I use regardless of whether I'm using my Jaaxy Enterprise subscription or WA's basic keyword tool - it's just a good way to double-check and validate the data (no keyword tool is 100% accurate, so Google's Keyword Planner is used as my double-check on search volume). The main difference between a membership with Jaaxy and the basic keyword tool is that you'll get a lot more data and insight. It's not necessary to get started, but I'd recommend at least taking them up on their initial free searches (you get a limited amount) and using them wisely. I hope that helps!

One question I have that someone may have the answer for.
Taking the keyword "free running"
1. Typing this into the keyword tool and clicking on the competition tab takes you to google and shows less than 300 (dont have exact number but try it)
2. Opening google and typing Free Running in the search reveals "About 276,000,000 results (0.43 seconds"

Not really sure why this is the case. Would be really grateful if anyone could explain.

So you are using WA's keyword tool and when you click on the competition link, you should see the Google header, then the line of keywords, and under that the competition stats. For example, one of my keywords shows "Page 2 of 183 results (0.75 seconds)". That tells me that there are 183 sites using this keyword.

You aren't seeing a similar line?

Hi thanks for reply ..no I'm not getting this up on google it just shows the web pages to go into doesn't show any keyword information at the top.. Is there a way of changing this do you know? thank you

I've not seen that before - unless you aren't showing the "Web" results.

When you click on competition, there should be a set of links at the top that include "Web", "Shopping", etc. Check to see that the "Web" link is underlined. If not, click on it.

How important is it to have your key word in your domain or web title. will having key words in your landing page or article content work?
then using other key words for different articles??
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
Your keyword does not have to be in your domain name. The general consensus in other discussions is that you want your domain name to be related to your niche but also to be relatively short and something someone can remember.

Kyle teaching is that as you develop content for your website, you'll find an appropriate keyword for each post. The post's keyword will be included in the title and within the first paragraph (actually, it's best to get it in the first 140 characters of the post). That's all that is necessary.

Bare w/ me, my understanding is that: Quality content is key, but without traffic quality content is mute. Both need to be stressed in a balance that is different in different niches. Too much of one or the other throws your site off balance. Maybe it's better explained this way... some pages need to be bound to keywords than linked to pages with quality content. Kind of like fishing! Attract them with the shiny things than hook them with the pointy things...(substance). Please correct me if my understanding is flawed... I am a newbie at this.
Reply
DomW Premium
All your pages should be quality content or it's a waste of time. Not all need to target specific keywords though.

I dont understand the 'Competition; rank. For example, I choose a keyword, say ""iphone apps" Searches = 2402992 Traffic = 408509 ( Looks very popular )

But when I click on the Competition 'View Result' to see the number of competing results for this keyword. It's showing me 418.
In reality its 30 Million +

Same for other keywords - the View Result is inaccurate compared to a Google search for the same keyword in " " . Why? Is the View result just a guideline figure?
Reply
LCJohn Premium
Okay, you are misunderstanding what is happening here. Let's use your iPhone apps example.

Currently there are 2.4 million searches for iPhone apps.
There is also 408,509 traffic results from those searches.
But, there are only 418 websites that have "iPhone apps" as an actual key phrase within their site.
So, your competition is 418 sites that cater to iPhone apps vs. the 408,509 people who click on links that may or may not have anything to do with actual iPhone apps.

Hope that helps.

LCJohn is right.

And Google search number is just an estimate. That's why as you go to page 3 and beyond, results get less and less accurate.

If you could find the results accurately by just searching in Google, you wouldn't need a keyword tool to tell you the QSR :). Ignore the Google box result.

223 is a good QSR, but I imagine financial freedom online will be occupied by some very strong competition.
Reply
edtay78 Premium
Thanks for the reply DomW, I guess the confusion is that the "View Result" link will pop up a goggle box with the key words filled in too but with " " around the keywords. But I think I got the explanation from AllynBeekman, :)
Reply
edtay78 Premium
Thanks for sharing DomW! May I ask what is the difference between a QSR and a normal search result?

E.g. if I search for key word "Financial Freedom Online" using the keyword tool, the following appears: Page 3 of 223 results (0.26 seconds)

If I use the same keyword on a goggle search box, the following appears: About 41,600,000 results (0.30 seconds)

Is this Keyword useful?
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
If I understand it correctly, QSR represents the competition, or the number of websites that use that keyword. On the other hand, the google search box is showing you any site that might have those three words somewhere on their site or maybe only two of them.

Dom might be able to state this better.

No, you don't need to use quotes when your create your page, it just searches in quotes to get the exact match results. You don't see your page there, presumably becuase it takes a few days to get added to Google's index.

when you search Google you're not searching the web, you're searching everything Google has found.

This is a nice tutorial and I finally understand better on how to use WA keyword tool. I have several questions.

1. Why did you put quotation marks around phrases in the search field ("make money now online for free"). What is the purpose?
2. You suggest finding keyword with fewer than 400 competing pages. Does 400 means 400 "pages", or is it 400 "websites"?
3. I know you did tutorial several years ago, but when I typed "make money now online for free", Google shows 185,000 results, so that means it has OVER 400 competing pages. Is the same keyword phrase still good?
4. Do you still recommend fewer than 400 pages and over 100 searches? Or has your metrics changed?

Thanks so much. - Tina

This was great. Thanks Dom. I have one question. You mentioned article power being below 8 makes it tricky to rank. Can you elaborate on this for me. I do not understand. I found 3 great key words to use with less than 30 pages of competition, but all 3 of have an article rating between 5.8 and 6.7. I guess I do not really undrstand what that means. Thanks
Reply
DomW Premium
Well it's kind of an old metric but it means the strength of the other sites. It's great to only have 30 competition, but what if those 30 are the best websites on the internet? Google ranks based on quality of sit as well as how closely you match the keyword. 5.8 sounds like you've got some strong competition. If you want me to look into it more you can pm me your keywords and I'll see
Reply
darrin0629 Premium
of the 30 it seems only 5 of them are relevant to my idea. And each one of them are Wordpress sites with subdomains. None of them are .com. Also the others are not very well put together sites. Very sloppy and not very user friendly.

Interesting, it should be easy to rank then. In this case, ignore the low article power.

The view results link is telling you how many competing sites you have with that keyword. I believe you have to double click on it and then it almost looks like it is taking you to Google search. Really what it is showing you is how many ? out of ? results. The second number - the number of results is the number of competing websites with those exact keywords. Kyle says he likes this to be under 300. Hope this helps and good luck.

Reply
DomW Premium
to find the real competition you have to type the search word in quotations and go to the final page, don't look at the first page of Google. 200 results = 200 other sites with that keyword.
Reply
misterM Premium
The thing is im getting two completely different results. Just after clicking the view results link, the first set of results shows "Pg 3 of about 300 results" , which is the last page. I then clicked the search button again, with the same keywords and quotations in there and it would bring me to "Pg 1 of about 600000 results". Which one should i be looking at?
Reply
DomW Premium
the last page, that's why the "view results" takes you there. The first page is wrong. If there are 6,000,000 results, why does it only show you 300 if you keep clicking to the final page? Google is misleading on page1
Reply
misterM Premium
the "view results" took me to the last page of 300 searches (Pg 3). Without changing anything, I clicked the search button again (for fun) and the page reloads and shows Pg 1 of 600000 results. Which one should i believe? the first set of results (300) or the re-searched one(600000)? If i were to base it on the first set of results, then my competition is only 300 sites - which is pretty good i guess. If not, it would be 600000 - which isnt good. Pardon my persistence in this, its two extremely different results and im kinda confused. Thanks in advance
Reply
DNave Premium
You need to base it on your first set of results (the 300). Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the other set of results is how many websites have those words in their site somewhere. So it's not using the exact phrase or set of words. I believe Google expands it's search to anything and everything that might relate to those words. Don't ask me why. Believe the Keyword Tool here at WA or Jaaxy, if you use it. Kyle and Carson won't steer you wrong.

I noticed in my niche alot of my highly searched a trafficed keywords have around 300 comptition... should i go lower even if the searches are low?
Reply
MmmmBalf Premium
It depends on how highly searched - if the keyword has 1000's of searches per month then 300 is ok (upper limit), if it only had 500 searches then no 300 would be too high.

You should mix it up and have both highly searched keywords as well as low hanging fruit. Don't get too fixated on low QSR for every page. LHF keywords may have low QSR, but they also have low traffic. Once you have lots of content even your pages with higher QSR can rank well if you've done your job right. :)

Thank you, Dom, this was really detailed and helpful!

I have a question on my own search. My niche is a particular weight loss system called the HCG diet. Searching for "hcg diet recipes" shows 3039 searches (that seems pretty good), 517 for traffic, and just 176 competing pages (yay!). If I understand the numbers correctly, then "hcg diet recipes" is a decent keyword for me.

But can it really be that easy? It was the first thing that popped into my head, I didn't have to brainstorm or dig deeper, it's grammatically correct, I can use it on tons of different recipe posts... Is this really low-hanging fruit? I feel like I must be missing something!
Reply
Wayne Wallace Premium
Yes, that sounds pretty good but you have to think about who is typing and searching for that? Is that the person you want? Or are they searching for how to loose weight naturally or safely? or whatever makes sense for your diet product. If you think people will type HCG then maybe that's good. I would not type that so you would not get me.
Reply
jjlonsdale Premium
Thanks for your reply Wayne! Yeah, I know, I'm assuming people have already heard about the HCG diet. But that's the niche I'm targeting -- people who want information/resources/recipes/encouragement for that particular system. It's similar to targeting people searching "weight watchers diet recipes" or "atkins diet recipes." From what I've been learning on here so far (and it's only been a week!) it's better to target a smaller audience, where you have a chance to provide quality content and become one of the voices that's heard, rather than try to reach everyone in the world who's trying to decide on a diet plan!
