How to Set Daily Goals

You want to get yourself organised. You don't seem to get anything done. You are all over the place and you are not achieving anything.

When you started your journey here at Wealthy Affiliate, you were asked to set some goals. Do you remember? I bet that it was big and ambitious goals. I am prepared to bet also that you didn't go through a process of thinking and molding them. Did you write it down? Have you formed a plan for your online business around your goals.?

In this training we will look at two aspects of goal settings:

  1. Part 1 - Writing Your Goals
    1. Make a list of all of your goals.
    2. Break your goals into daily steps.
    3. Set benchmarks and deadlines.
    4. Try the S.M.A.R.T. model for setting goals.
  2. Part 2 - Making Achievable Daily Goals
    1. Set a realistic time frame.
    2. Set a daily routine.
    3. Track your progress.
    4. Take it one step at a time.

We are going to look at writing down your goals, setting benchmarks to achieve and then we will break them down so that you can accomplish what you have set out to do.

Lets look at Part 1 - Writing your goals.

Simplicity. Is so important and key for me. Because my magic magnifying mind always complicates life. And the more complicated my mind makes it out to be then it is harder, more impossible, and I left with only my dreams. And I have come to realize that too have a dream it's only a dream, until I am ready to take action. And many times for me today it is to be reminded that is to put one step in front of the other and do the next right thing. Unfortunately life continues to happen and go on, even when I am working my daily goals and routine, life somehow continues to get in the way with its difficulties and challenges, and I have been tempted many times to just give up. That this whole situation of life that it is just too hard. But when I bring it back down to reality and keep it simple, then life does not overtake me.

Thank you again for the reminder! I can't ever have enough of these simple reminders of life!

You are welcome, Ramona. Thank you for your great and honest comment. Discernment is a gift that we all must pray for. We must be able to distinguish between our goals and the distractions that life throw at us. If we can master that, our daily life will be a lot easier and satisfied.
All the best to you

I think this is absolutely GREAT for new members. It's especially good for people (new or seasoned) who might get stressed thinking they have to accomplish everything all at once, the ones who get caught up in several projects at once, or even the ones who get a little lax in growing their business. Short and powerful...great lessons!!

Hi Hennie,

It's so easy to lose track of your goals unless you set and achieve smaller relevant daily goals that lead to your primary goal.

My favorite saying is:
"It's hard to remember that your main purpose was to drain the swamp when you are surrounded by alligators":)

Thanks for the great tips.

Thanks that is a great training in today's society it is very nosey and I found by setting goals you could remove some of that nose because you start to concentrate on the goals instead of the nose.

Would there be a book that you use or recommend to read if someone would want to learn more about setting up their goals?

Although the steps stated here have been introduced and mentioned by many sources, but it is still relevant and effective in reaching our goals. Thank you for reminding us to write down our goals.
Upon reading your article, I put my brief goals in 2018 on my iPhone Notes. I will refine it in the coming days. Since I use my iPhone most of the times, this method would remind me each and every moment. I also set reminder in my iPhone Calendar to check my goal at end of the day.
Once again, appreciate your advice and give us idea how to be effective in my own way. God bless.

Hi Hennie,

While I agree with everything you are teaching here, I have to say that this strategy is not for everyone, not for every project, and it's easier taught than learned. I applaud you, Hennie, if you are able to always use this approach in your work. If a project is well defined and structured - I could probably follow your technique.

However, to me, this current project (SWAG) is a continuous creativity. I couldn't envision the whole picture when I started, I still can't. Inspiration and Muse don't come by an appointment. I change my mind on project's direction quicker than I'd be able to write down a new plan.

My long-term goal is S.M.?.R.T. But, if I wanted to plan the whole project thoroughly upfront, I should spend several months to a year only on developing my ideas, creating the architecture of the website, defining its content structure and dependencies, settling on a design, and accepting my own vision with a high score. Then, I should be able to define short-term goals as SMART.

As I understand this project, it was meant to be more or less spontaneous and doesn't have to be fully defined upfront. For me, record keeping would only be an additional work and reason for stress. I have to find some other ways to move on at a good pace.

But thank you very much for sharing with us what works for you. I hope that many people will find this useful and will be able to adapt your strategy.

Hi, Julia. Thank you so much for reading and commenting.

I hear what you say. For me, goal setting is giving structure to my day.

The SWAG project is nothing else but a goal to reach every month. So I break that up into daily tasks to achieve the monthly goal. I incorporated SWAG into my yearly goal even though I don't know what is coming for the months ahead. I still make space for SWAG task to be accomplished day to day.

Structure is part of my personality. I like order and I like to plan ahead as much as humanly possible.

Thank you again for taking the time.

Hennie

I envy you (in a good way)! Like I said, this particular project does not want to behave. It drags me in different directions. I don't envision the whole picture - that's why I can't plan properly. :)

Hi Hennie, this is exactly what I need. I am so busy but I don't really accomplish that which I would like to and know that I can. I am far too scattered and need structure.

This has been bookmarked and the first thing on my to do list tomorrow is to actually go through with my microscope and do what you're advising us to do.

All the best,
