Several members have asked questions about their Google Sitemaps, how to find one, generate one and submit it to the Google Search console.

This video will explain how to create your sitemap.xml file using All-in-One's SEO tool. An automatic site generator is now included.Once you have this processed figured out, it only take about two minutes. You'll see what I man.

NOTE:

I reference All-In-One SEO's Sitemap.xml feature. Be sure to click the following link to initiate your first sitemap. After that, it will get updated automatically. I should have mentioned this in the video:

Give it a quick run through and I hope it helps.

Cheers,

pj

Thanks so much for sharing this, it's been really helpful! I'm just stuck in one place. When I test my sitemap it tells me that I have an Empty Sitemap, with this message "Your Sitemap does not contain any URLs. Please validate and resubmit your Sitemap". I have 26 posts on my blog at this point - what am I missing? How do I go about adding URLs to my sitemap and validating it?

Will I need to manually add each post in the future?

Thanks for your help.

How do we work through an error that has occur while trying to test this sitemap in the google console? I am getting an error that says "General HTTP error: 404 not found
HTTP Error: 404" .
Thanks for any help.

You have 7 sitemaps, which you can see at:
http://bestweightforyou.com/sitemap.xml

When testing, don't include the whole URL of your domain

Just add the end part, for example, type into the test field only the last part:

addl.xml.gz
post.xml.gz

Try that and let us know if it works. ~Jude

when I change my post or page, it is necessary to update the sitemap?

Or

Any recommendation to frequently update a sitemap?
Reply
Daymo Premium
If by changing a page you mean deleting a page and creating a completely new page that didnt exist in your previous sitemap it maybe a good idea to create a new sitemap so google can find your new page.

If you just changing content on a page I dont think it will be necessary.

Also if you switch from siterubix, to your own domain then Yes I would certainly create a new sitemap for that

according to what I have read the SEO tool automatically does this update.

How important is it to have a sitemap attached to ones site?
Reply
PjGermain Premium
Very! Like one of the most important things, because it's how Google knows how to create links for search results. It's like the directions to your house. the Map and directions for how to get there.

This is a helpful tutorial. I get through all the steps and hit update sitemap and then click on view sitemap I get the following error message. This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below. Can you think of what I'm doing wrong? I tried to submit to google and it said the sitemap was empty and had no url's in it?

Yes, that indicates that you have not yet clicked that link I mentioned to create your very first sitemap. Try that :-)

I've tried clicking that link a couple of times and still get the same error message. Not sure why I'm coming up empty. This seems pretty elementary. Might have to sleep on it and come back at it again tomorrow.

thx. i think it's working. I have another message but it may just be the browser ...."This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below." For now I'm not going to worry with it and will come back to it as I progress :)

Hey Pj ... I remember trying to submit a site map to Google way back and I got an error message which I interpreted as ... this is not going to work for me. I went on to other steps in the training and working on my site.

The automatic update feature really caught my attention, so I thought I'd try again. Well when I click View Your Sitemap I still get this error message:

XML Parsing Error: no element found
Location: http://fullswinggroove.com/sitemap.xml
Line Number 1, Column 1:

Any idea what I should do to correct this problem?

Hi Dennis,

In order to create a sitemap, you'll need to log into your webmaster tools which can be accessed here
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/
You have setup Webmaster Tools correct? If not here is some training on how to set this up Checkout the screenshot below to get to the page where you'll be setting up your sitemap below.

Once you're on the sitemaps page look to your top right and you'll see a red box that says add/test a new sitemap. Click on it and type this into the box that drops down, sitemap.xml and click on the submit button. That's it. Also, before you do this, make sure that you have either the Google XML sitemap plugin installed and activated on your site or see if your All In One SEO pack has a sitemap included in it.

If you still need help with this Dennis please let me know and I'll be glad to help you out further.

I hope you're enjoying your Memorial Day weekend and I'll chat with you soon.

Cheers
~Your Friend, Scott~

Thank you for the response Pj. Not sure what the "wee" link is, but I DID click Update Site Map before I clicked View Site Map. That's when I got the error message.

I'm going to try Scott's recommendation below. I don't think I have done this process over in Google.

Within All-in-One SEO, click the link I indicate within the attached photo. This error is normally because you haven't yet created your first sitemap.

Thanks Scott ... Google found a site error (404 not found). I know what the problem is ... thought I had avoided it. I think I can fix it. I'll PM you with more details and to say hello to my referring mentor.

You are most welcome Dennis!

I occasionally get 404 not found errors as well and this isn't really something you should be worried about. 404s don't hurt your rankings but if you know what generated this error then I would advise you to get it fixed.

I'll look forward to your PM Dennis and we shall discuss this in more detail once I receive your PM.

Hi Dennis, I have the exact same issue and nothing seems to work. Did you figure it out yet? thanks, Deb
Reply
NWTDennis Premium
Hi Debra ... although Scott says 404 errors don't hurt our SERPs, I'm assuming they do affect the XML site map process in Google WMTools. I did a broken link check using:

http://www.brokenlinkcheck.com/#

and discovered I had several. I'm using an image credit Footnote Table which is where I found the broken links. I may have to abandon this practice. Have spent hours fixing. I'm almost ready to try Google Tools again.

Have I figured out a straight forward process? No ... but I'm hoping my referring mentor (Scott) will get some time to answer the PM I sent him. He's a busy guy now that he's a Super Affiliate (went to LV this last January).

I'll keep you posted.

I will try the broken link check. Thank you so much Dennis, I appreciate it! Deb
Reply
NWTDennis Premium
Hi Debra ... I've fixed all broken links reported, and resubmitted the Google XML Site map file function. Google says the request is pending because of General HTTP error: 404 not found. So now I'm back to error I first reported to Pj above.

When I check my WP activated XML Site Map I get:
XML Parsing Error: no element found

So now I'm back to trying to figure out how to fix this. I think it's going to require using a FTP function which I've been reluctant to do because the FTP services I've checked are also malware mine fields. I've tried it a couple of times avoiding any suspicious offers, but each time my Avest Security software blocks the loading.

Hey, I just happened to be in my next training section and came across the instructions from Kyle for sitemaps, and it worked for my site. He recommends using a plugin instead of all in one SEO. You can find it under Course 4, Lesson 10. Here is the link, if I did it right
. Hope this helps!
Reply
NWTDennis Premium
Oops ... I'm exposed. I'll have to admit that I've been so anxious to get over to Bootcamp Training, and frankly a little worn out from all the SM tasks (not my thing) that I didn't complete Course 5 of the Cert Training.

This was not like me at all, but that is what I did. I've been cleaning up some tasks on my niche site and peeking into Bootcamp. This will be a real lesson learned if it solves my site mapping problems. Don't skip any thing. Do all the training, at least once.

Thank you for bringing me back to reality Debra. My offer on fixing broken links still applies ... if you need help. Sounds like you may not.

you are welcome, we helped each other which is what it's all about! If nothing else, we both can benefit from learning not to skip any training. :)

I can't find any mention of a recommended Site Map Plugin from Kyle that works better than the AIO SEO Plug in for site maps. I know many members use Yoast SEO and I'm considering that option.

What I think Kyle is talking about in Lesson 3 of Cert Course 5 has to do with using Google WMTools to submit your site map that you have created using AIO SEO or some other site map plugin. It's a 2 step process.

It's great that it worked for you ... congratulations. That means your AIO Plugin Site Map is working. As I mentioned above to Pj my AIO Site Map is not working. My options are use a FTP service to delete my AIO XML site files containing the XML Parsing Error: no element found or use a different XML Site Map generator like Yoast SEO.

Don't you just love the geeky computer language we get into?

What is the fold on a web page that google refers to?
Tim
Reply
PjGermain Premium
The "fold" is the bottom of the screen when you first go to a web page.

What I can see without scrolling down is "above the fold"......while, What I can see After scrolling down is "below the fold". Google likes to mainly content above the fold.

So if I delete a page, does it automatically update or do I have to resend my site map?
Reply
PjGermain Premium
No, page deletion is a wee different. It will yield a 404 - Not found warning, but that's okay. Google is used to it and it will not hurt your seo, unless you have 100s of them.

From Google:

When to return a 404 status code

When you remove a page from your site, think about whether that content is moving somewhere else, or whether you no longer plan to have that type of content on your site.

When moving content to a new URL, redirect the old URL to the new URL—that way when users come to the old URL looking for that content, they’ll be automatically redirected to something relevant to what they were looking for.

When you permanently remove content without intending to replace it with newer, related content, let the old URL return a 404 or 410.

Awesome training PJ. Thanks! Would you recommend All-In-One SEO over Yoast?
Reply
PjGermain Premium
They are both very good. Kyle recommends AIO over Yoast. I have both (separate websites). The great thing about AIO are the least of things it can to help remove the need for other plugins. But, the great thing about Yoast is the content checker to help ensure you have all the elements for on-page SEO. So, they both have things the other does not. It really depends on what you need it for.
