In this training we are going to be looking at how you can create and optimize content on your website to give you the best results. Whilst it is very important for us to create content that appeals to our human readers, you also need to impress Google if you want to rank highly within the search results. For this reason its essential that you understand a little bit about how the search engines see your website and what they expect from it.

Lets get started...

Hello Andrew,

Where would you verify your website in WordPress?

I have a picture of adding text in the DNS configuration?

How do you do this if WA is our host?

Hi Andrew

great resource here- Many thanks. I haven't added any alt KW text to my images and have reviewed all my posts after reading this.

Would I need to fetch again with Google or would Google read it automatically?

Thanks
Teresa

Andrew-74 Premium
Hi there. Google will find your updated articles automatically. You see, every time you hit the publish button or update within WordPress, it sends out what is called a "ping". Google are notified that your content has been updated and will re-visit your site. How long this will take can vary from a few hours to a few days.

Yes you do!!

Going back over older posts might seem like a lot of work, but believe me, its worth it!

Google loves old content that is brought up to date. Take note of your traffic levels, update all of your content and then see where you are after a couple of weeks.

I bet your traffic levels will have increased if you follow the training here.

Take care,

Andrew

Great training Andrew!!
When revisiting and amending my old posts, is it enough to just publish them via the WP admin tool or will I need to Fetch them again via the Google console?

Also should I be changing the published date to be current? I have had problems before setting the published date for the future only to find that the posts are NOT re-published - I see a message along the lines of 'Missed the date'.

So what I do is make the changes, click update (as the published button is disabled) and the published date remains the same - which could be 3/4 months ago.

Any advise?

Thanks
Reply
moniquerene Premium
Jackie - your post dates will have much LESS TO DO with SEO than your post KEYWORDS will have with Google SEO and the SEO of other browsers like BING, YOAST, etc.

Just add INTERNAL LINKS on older posts that POINT TO newer posts, without changing dates . . you'll be all set.

Hi there! Sorry for the delay in replying. I see you already got some good advice here. And yes, quite right, no need for any fancy stuff. No need to let Google know and definitely no need to change any dates. When you make any changes to any of your posts, WordPress will automatically "ping" the search engines without you doing anything other than updating your content. Just add relevant links pointing to more of your pages and remove any content that might be old our outdated. Hit update and your done!

Is it wrong to use the same alternate tags for all the pictures in a single post?
Reply
Andrew-74 Premium
The Alt Tags are designed to help blind people to understand your blog. Therefore, you should use something that describes the image. SEO benefits of using alt tags are just a side-effect of what they are actually meant for. So although your alt tags should contain keywords, they shouldn't all be the same. The most important thing is that they describe the image that they are attached to.
Reply
MBond Premium
Thank you Andrew. That helps a great deal, now I have to go back and update my alt tags so they are more descriptive.
Reply
Andrew-74 Premium
Yeah, I know what you mean. I've been there!

Thanks for this training Andrew. I didn't know that the alt tags really made a difference for SEO. Here's my problem with it....when I do this I get a box around my photo. Consequently I stopped doing it as it looks bad. Is there a way that I can fix this?
Reply
Triblu Premium
Hey Donna,

If you can you provide a screen print of what you are referring to ... especially a before and after print ... then it would be much easier to help you with your issue.

Yes, ALT tags are VERY important for SEO.

Members here who are visually impaired have (Thankfully!) encourage my using these tags on my sites now too.

In years past, these tags were being abused, so many of us chose to ignore them. Not any more though, because now they are strictly used by the browsers for visually impaired.
Reply
dsrowe Premium
Triblu, actually I was wrong. I get a box around my photo when I enter a caption not an alt tag. I had the information in both the alt tag and the caption and just figured the box appeared for both of them. I hope this makes sense.
Reply
Triblu Premium
It sure does Donna,

You DO NOT need to use the caption but you SHOULD use the ALT tags. :-))

Thanks for this training.
Some SEO tools suggest to use all possible headings (H1-H6) in your articles for better Google rankings. I do not find this very helpful for readability.
What is your view on that?
Reply
TateHopesMom Premium
Frankly I think that anything over H-3 is entirely to big and would pull a readers attention away from the actual content. But that's just my opinion
Reply
juanesnaider Premium
Thanks! I totally agree that it doesn't help for readability.
I was just wondering if using all heading types (including H1-2) improves Google ranking.
Reply
Andrew-74 Premium
Personally, I have a H1 title at the top of every post and page. Then throughout the rest of the article I have H3 titles. Only on the odd occasion will I use an additional H2 title if I want something to really stand out. Most of my articles have just 1 X H1 title and the rest are H3's.

Hope that helps!
Reply
juanesnaider Premium
Great, thanks!!!
Makes total sense to me. The only thing is that my titles in the Wordpress template are obviously H2 per default. And then adding manually another H1 heading at the top of each post/page looks weird.
In general I would also go for the H1 and then H3 structure that you propose...
Reply
Andrew-74 Premium
Yeah, the theme that I use puts a default H1 title at the top. I leave that as it is and then use H3 for the rest.
Reply
juanesnaider Premium
Yeah, very good. Was considering to change my theme anyway. Thanks for your support!

Some people say to just publish articles and move onto the next one, personally I like the idea of revisiting so expand on them.
The ALT TAG you're referring to makes sense for a product. EG - XYZ 2017 , But what would you use when just an information article?
Reply
Andrew-74 Premium
Hi there! Revisiting articles is often a good idea after they have been published for a while. I went over my articles again after about 6 months. Google likes info to be kept updated, so I think this is why I have had good results wit this method.

As for the alt tag. You should actually always use alt tags on the images that you add to your posts and pages. They are designed to help blind people visualize what an image is showing. But alt tags also tell Google what the image is all about too. That's why it's good for SEO.

Even if you are just writing an info article you should still include a description of the image in an alt tag.

Hope that helps!

Really good content. Now i unsdertand how work a Search Engine. I still have one question, in the article i only saw the name of google as search engine. Should i asume that others works similiar?
Reply
Andrew-74 Premium
Hi there! Very good question. Yes, they all work in a similar way but Google is way ahead of the others in terms of technology. Bing is trying to catch up, but the two of them are the main ones to worry about. I tend to worry about Google since it gets the majority of users. The two search engines do look for different things when it comes to ranking your content. However, just concentrating on Google will generally get you ranked in most search engines.

Thanks for sharing this, Andrew. I have a question: when linking to a previous blog, is it necessary to link to an exact keyword? I link to relevant content, which doesn't necessarily contain a keyword.
Reply
Andrew-74 Premium
That's an excellent question! In order to let Google know what keyword phrase you would like to rank for its a good idea to at least get one or two exact keyword phrases in there. Although its also good to mix things up a bit too. Say if you were linking to a review of Wealthy Affiliate for example. You might link to that review with: "Wealthy Affiliate Review" "Review Of Wealthy Affiliate" "Click here for my Wealthy Affiliate Review". And maybe mix in a few generic links like "click here for my review" or "this is my no.1 recommendation".

I always try to have at least 1 link from another blog post that points to an older one with the exact keyword. Of course you can also use images to link to posts as well. The key is to keep it natural. Don't make it look like you are pushing too hard for a particular keyword phrase.

Hope that helps! Let me know if I can help you further.

Andrew

This is xclnt. I just have one question. If you go back and update or improve and older post should you then submit that post to the search engines again and maybe get some new comments at WA about it too?
Reply
Andrew-74 Premium
Hello! Thanks for the question. When you update a post within WordPress it does what is called a "ping" which automatically notifies Google that an update has been made. Google will sooner or later return to check what has been updated on that page to see where they should rank you. If improvements have been made, you should see a rise in rank over time.

Adding comments is always a good idea after doing an update too as it shows that your efforts are also getting people to interact. The only thing I would say to avoid would be adding too many comments at once. Everything drip fed in moderation, but on a regular basis is the best way.

Hope that helps!
