You now have to enter your phone number in order to get a verification code.

Enter your phone number and click the Send Code button.

ChatGPT will send a 6-digit code to your phone. Enter it and you will be verified. The next screen you see is some introductory information.

Read and click the Next button.

I've heard enough to know that I need/want ChatGPT. But when I attempted to sign up, this is the first item I came into contact with.

"Log in with your OpenAI account to continue"

Is OpenA1 an additional account that we must have before we can sign up with ChatGPT?

No, OpenAI is the owner of ChatGPT. You must have clicked on something that indicated that you already have an account. Please check the training again.
