I often see questions about how to make the home page of our websites show as a blog roll, and how to add the "Read More" button.

This is something which more experienced members take for granted, but for newer members, it is another obstacle to defeat when you are trying to get to grips with Wordpress.

So here goes.......

Next up: How to make your Home page into a blog roll

Thank you Chrissies! I was looking for this information, and even asked the question in live chat. This is great information if you happen to choose a template that has that continuously and awfull endless scroll.

Is it possible to have set a "read more"/"continue reading" option like described in the training, but instead of having them continue where they left off, simply go back to the top of the page? So i guess my question is, is it possible to use this read more option to shorten my blog roll, but when clicking the link, is brought to the top of my article/post?
Reply
Labman Premium
Yes, you can do that. I don't know why you would want to do this but it is possible.
I would offer them related content on another page.
To shorten your blog roll use an excerpt.

Hi Chrissie,

Thanks for the clear directions. It works on my site, except I can't figure out how to make it blue or some other color that stands out like yours does. It's black like the rest of the text and on the left, so it's easy to miss.

Any way to change that?

Thanks,
Sophia

I believe that would be in your link colors, and that should be set in your theme settings.

Are you talking about the read more text?
Reply

Hi Paul,

Yes, I've looked in my theme settings and there doesn't seem to be an option to change it.

I'm having a lot of trouble with this. I set up my website with categories for the blog posts to roll into. And another gal Maria told me to check out this lesson. So I checked and I followed your steps, including republishing the page and even refreshing, and it's saying that "Oops nothing available here" on my home page. I can only access the blog post through the actual blog post category. Is that the problem?

You need to go back to Settings > Reading and make sure your home page is set to Blog Roll.

Grace...

When I go back to Settings > Reading the item 'home' is not a option.

I found 'home' under Appearance > Menu structure (as a custom link)

So confused!! What do I do now? :(

Thank you for your patience Grace!

Not sure what you're trying to do.

It's okay...Grace. Feigner (Phil) helped me figure it out last night. I had to add a featured photo on my home page of my blog article. I think it is a theme thingy.

Thank you for your time and assistance to help me.

Have a great day!!

Chrissies...Does it matter where you put the read more link?

Thank you for this...

Usually you will have a snippet of text that makes the reader want to read more. That's where you want to place the link. Tease them a bit to get them to click through.

aha...thanks Craig..now if I can only get it to show up on my home page. GRRR :(

Hope you have managed to get it sorted now Evon :)

Phil (feigner) was my hero...I had to have a featured photo posted, then it worked. (theme thingy)

But now I got a comment from Kyle that he doesn't like categories cuz people have to 'hunt' for my posts. So I'm not sure what to do about that.

Any advice?

Thanks for getting back to me Chrissies,

~Evon

Are you using categories instead of menus? Personally, I prefer menus.
But if you are not really sure what Kyle means, then if I were you I would ask him directly, and ask for his advice as to what to do :)
Reply
LadybugLove Premium
Yeah...I did that...waiting on his reply. He originally had us create pages in the menu, but someone told me to see your training and I changed it. Apparently Kyle doesn't like the categories. He said that they make it difficult to find posts...you have to hunt, I guess.

I just want it to work smoothly for my audience to find things easily. Seems that wordpress is a bit of a maze. I never had trouble with these things on Weebly. Ugh!

How do you use menus Chrissies? Can I do that with a blog roll? Soooo confused!
Reply
Chrissies Premium
You can have a basic menu with all your posts across the top, it depends how many you have. If you have a number, you can put some posts into sub-menus.
There are so many ways, and lots of training to help you. Here is one: but if you type "menus"in the search bar, you will be able to see what is available and choose which one suits your needs.
I do hope this helps you :)

Hi,
I just tried to put in the "read more" thing and it shows up in the post in my dashboard but not on the post on the website. I did everything you said but still can't get it to work. What's up with that? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Scott

Hi Scott
The read more line will not show up when you go to the complete post, but it should show on your blog roll, is that not happening?

That is very odd!! It is probably worth trying again, because Wordpress does have a glitch sometimes!!
I have edited that part of the training to make sure that it is absolutely clear.
I must admit that it has worked every time for me.

I went back, checked to see that I did everything and realized i did not 'publish the changes, only put them in draft mode and then, of course, did not refresh the page either.

I really screwed up and I apologize greatly!
