So you want to make an ebook, do ya? That is great! Ebooks and pdf reports are great to give away to help build your email list or to sell for some online profits. Info products online are big business and learning how to make a document into a pdf report with clickable links is super important to the success of your online business. Let’s take a minute today to learn how to create a document and convert it into a pdf report – in simple PotPieGirl steps (yes, with pictures too...lol!)

I have tried quite a few pdf converts in my time, but I have finally settled in on a VERY easy (and free) way to make my pdf reports.

Ok - Let’s Make an eBook

Ok…. know how everyone says to start by creating your document in Word? Well don’t do that. Trust me on this. You’ll see why in a moment.

Go to OpenOffice.org and download Open Office for free. Open Office is kinda like Microsoft Office. It has a word processor like Word and it is very similar to use.

I know, I know… you are wondering why you have to download ANOTHER word processor when you already have one…. But trust me on this one, ok?

So, go to OpenOffice.org and click the “I want to download OpenOffice.org” button. That will open up a green box that says “Download Now” – so click that and start the download.

Go ahead and let it download and then install it. It’s all pretty straight-forward. If you have any issues, just check at their site.

Hi Jennifer;
I am just starting to make an eBook. How many pages should it be? Thank You for your blog. I already use OpenOffice. Thanks again for a great tutorial.

Hi, Jennifer! Another simple and easy-to-follow tutorial. As, You know, there are tons of tutorials how to create an e-book, but, still, it is very useful to deal with easy-to-follow tutorials, which can be used from anybody. The next issue is to promote, market and convert such e-books (if that is the purpose of it, of course) into buying prospects and making money...subject for more tutorials...Thanks for sharing!

Nice tutorial. Simple and to the point. Sometimes we forget the simple things or take things for granted, like everyone "has this or that" or knows how to "do this or that," which of course isn't the case. Thanks

I have an old 07 version of mac book and I was able to download the open office software. I use it on the go, and I have it in all my puters, however it in not available for the iPhone or iPad. Grrrrr.

Hi Jennifer! I have a question on why you prefer OpenOffice to Word for creating ebooks. You say it's because "all the links WILL work". I'm not really sure what you mean by that. When I save my text as a PDF in Word, the links I create are also clickable...?
Reply

what is your site? address. so I can see the link you are speaking of.

Hey just an FYI. Every time you click "yes" for asking a question it is showing up in main dashboard and everyone is coming here to answer your question and YOU are in need of help .

If you are helping someone, just hit reply then only that person sees the question. I just realized that myself the other day.

Hi , I just want to know how many words is an ebook?
Reply
Cali Premium
Hey, hello there. An e-book can be a book so the word count is not something important. There can be many chapters and each chapter can contain 5000, 10000 or 20000 words or more. I have e-books that I have downloaded that are 180 pages.

However when writing a free report in the form of an e-book those are usually around 12 to 30 pages.

And sense most writing done online is in this layout one can fill out many pages fast without cramming tons of words in there.

People are also keen to get those keywords in those free e-books.

Hope this helps you understand the information you seek.

I am just finishing up my first eBook. I started out with my outline and looked nice and concise. However, as I began compiling and oictures and more writing,.... it NOW has 6 chapters and I'm right at 100,000 words, so I'm figuring aroound 100 pages up or down some.

I actually probably had enough stuff for a couple of books, because I ended up "cutting out" some of the in-depth explanations and additional examples and citations to pare it down to this length, which works out well as I focused my attentions more heavily on the areas of greater importance for my topic, since it is written for the "newbies/beginners" to the world of affiliate marketing.

I didn't want to put the cart before the horse and overwhelm people just getting going, cuz I can remember what it was like for me when I started online marketing or online business "anything", which is the "basic" target demographic group with a few more twists iin focus to stand out and be unique within the "making money online" niche.

I hope that gives you a little more information that you were seeking.

Maybe this will help. There are other YouTube videos - you just have to go through them on various topics related to Open Office. Hard to find good ones though.

Great post and top class information here on your eBook.
I see you first made this post in 2010! Good work, I hope you made many sales since then?
You can now use MS office to convert your word document into pdf, from your "save as" drop down menu. I have not used it to save pictures or hyperlinks in my documents, this is my next item to check out for myself. Thanks for the post and how you linked in other website links in this post, just shows you have got some practice at this work, all very useful information to many here at WA. I have bookmarked this post for my future reference.

Ok... When you say with pictures you were talking about pictures in this training course. I was hoping it would show options for putting pictures in the PDF. I'm not familiar with the picture formats I can use with Open Office. I'll go tinker with it and try to figure it out.

Laughing Hard. I was attempting to do this on my own with the Open Office I already had, but after staring at the tools I thought maybe it was too basic of a program and went searching for free PDF creators and ultimately logged into WA to see what someone else suggests. The first page of PotPieGirl's training tells me to download Open Office. Ha! Ok, on to page 2.

Hi PotPieGirl,

Thank you soooooooooooo much for this! Oh man I am so grateful for you, and the work you put into this, and for sharing this. This is terrific stuff!

I was on my 2 mile walk this morning in the cold winter air brainstorming for ideas and came up with one for an ebook to sell on one of my mini-wordpress niche sites I have. Now thanks to you I know how to do it.

All that is left is to put some sweat behind the idea.

Here is another converter that I have been using for years and it has never failed me!

You use it as a printer, so instead of printing to your ordinary paper printer you choose this when the dialogue comes up. In other words you can print a PDF from any program with this one, I find it very usefull and it's free of charge if you don't upgrade that is.
