That looks correct but make sure that you click on the top tab that says text then insert the code then click back on the view tab and the code should work properly
If you are inserting the code under the view tab then you will see the code that mean it wrong....you want always insert HTML code under TEXT

Ok I think I got it. So put it under the tab "text" and NOT "visual". Right now it is a blank white box for my theme so I'm guessing an ad will appear once google adsense approve me. Here is a pic of what it looks like now
