NOTE: SINCE THE PUBLISHING OF THIS TUTORIAL GOOGLE HAS CHANGED THE NAME OF GOOGLE WEBMASTER TOOLS TO "GOOGLE SEARCH CONSOLE" BUT THEIR WEB ADDRESS STILL SAYS WEBMASTER TOOLS.

In this 4th part of my training series, How to Improve Website Rankings, I will explain some of the benefits of Google Webmaster Tools that I use to help boost my SEO. If you do not have your website registered with Google Webmaster Tools (GWT), then I HIGHLY recommend that you do so!

If you want to get good rankings it is essential that you have your website registered with GWT. Kyle provides training that will get you set up very easily. If you haven’t reached that part of the training yet, you will eventually. If you do have GWT set up, I will share two features I always use that helps to get me better rankings quicker.

Why I love using Google Webmaster Tools

Google Webmaster Tools is a free Google service that can help a great deal with the building and operation of your website. It contains many features that will help to keep your online business and websites running smoothly. The more-smooth your website operates, the better your SEO.

Though I use GWT for many different things, the two areas I consistently use it for is to find current actionable keywords for my top rated posts and to get my content indexed into Google within hours of publishing it, thus bypassing the normal 3 to 4 day waiting period.

Great training, also learned today that content can only be 4 hours old when asking for it to be indexed by Google.

Reply
TanjaRita Premium
This is normal. Just wait an hour or so (sometimes less) and submit the link again!
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
This happens from time to time.

But on another note I noticed that your website has a www after the http://

As Kyle says in the training for setting up and registering your website with Google Search Console, you must NOT use www in your domain name because it will cause indexing problems with Google.
Reply
JacobMills Premium
Thanks I got it to work. I haven't even gotten to that point in the training but I guess it's too late since I've already submitted it?
Reply
ChrisGooden Premium
It's never too late. You can re-index at any time.

Once you have a solid site, that's been stable for a couple of years, then you won't want to mess up your ranking by re-indexing. But in your first few months you don't have anything to break. Take the time to get it right.
Reply

Just reindex your website without the www so you do not have any future problems

Reply
JeffKent Premium
I built the shell first week of March, and have been adding pages (and only a few posts) regularly ever since. Been trying to use low competition key words in the Title, first 140 characters...
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
It is going to take Google a couple of months before you even begin to see any action on your website and of course this is only if you have submitted a sitemap, otherwise it could take Google even longer.

Seeing how you said you just started in the first week of March, I would not start worrying until beginning of June. To expect a lot of activity in rankings and in clicks which comes from more exposure through rankings within about a months time is not going to happen.

If you want quicker exposure start sharing your site on Social Media. It is not a guarantee, especially if you don't have a lot of followers but it couldn't hurt if you do.

HillaryH Premium
ah, i see something. it's redirecting to http://ecofriendlygirl.com/ from http://www.ecofriendlygirl.com--how do i fix that, or do i need to? thank you.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Are you fetching with www? Never use www. And you should not be fetching your home page of ecofriendlygirl because Google already knows that. Only fetch the page or post names, such as

about-me
cleaning-supplies
personal-care
edibles
phthalates-harmful-effects

When doing a Fetch you only want to fetch the names, never the entire link and never use a www.
Reply
HillaryH Premium
okay so if the www is already there, how do i remove it? thanks.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
www should not be there to begin with. When setting up your website with GWT, you obviously typed in your domain in that way, instead of just ecofriendlygirl.com as Kyle instructs. You may need to reindex your domain name.

I am not quite sure how that may effect your rankings if at all. But before you do anything, ask Kyle if reindexing your domain with GWT is needed and if not how to fix the error.

Hello Robert! I am in the process of doing this now, but may I ask you a question? If non of the pages are indexed 10 days after verification with WMT and submission of the sitemap, how would you interpret that? Could this mean that something else is wrong? Of this is just normal?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
It could be. But how do you know they are not indexed? Did you do a site search in the Google search bar? This is the easiest way to see what is indexed.
Reply
Igor69 Premium
I do not know what kind of search do you mean, but I looked for certain pages and found nothing. It is all empty within GWT. It says 0 indexed, no clicks, no nothing, even though I fetched 10 pages two days ago, and made verification&submitted; site map 12 days ago.

Bing, on the other hand, indexed all within few days even without the sitemap, so I have something to compare with. There is no doubt, something is wrong but I have no idea where to start troubleshooting.

Any suggestion on what to check?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
That is odd that Bing would have it and not Google. I just did a site search on Google by typing in site:independent-entrepreneur.com in the search bar and as you said, nothing came up.

Make sure you have GWT saved properly in your All-in-One SEO General Settings and make sure you uploaded your sitemap directly to GWT.
Reply
Igor69 Premium
Yes, I have rechecked that but it was all done correctly.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Did you manually upload your sitemap on the GWT main page?
Reply
Igor69 Premium
I followed the steps that Kyle showed in this video, I am sure you know the content of it. It is pretty simple process so I could not find any error there. This was done 20 april, and after a 10 days a did fetch on 10 pages. Still no change.

I am doing research to find the answer, some people claim that sometimes indexing takes time, but somehow, I can not buy it in this case. This is a tricky one.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
It can take time, I believe it took 3 weeks for my first website. But if it goes any longer, submit a support ticket to WA tech support and see if they can help.

Hello there! If I already submitted to index all my posts/pages, and then afterwards I updated them, would google detect the updated posts/pages?
Reply
edtay78 Premium
Hi Nina, using Google fetch is in a way asking Google to index your contents faster. If you update your posts/pages later, Google will eventually know because it sends a spider to crawl your website on a regular basis.

You only have 10 limited times per month to fetch and index a page and all links within it. Therefore, it is also beneficial to submit contents regularly so that Google know how often to crawl your website.
Reply
msnix Premium
Oh I see. Thanks edmund for making it clear :)

just go to google fetch and put in your URL BUT you have to remove the first part of the URL and also the backslash because that is already in the fetch bar - not it will understand

I've tried Fetching As Google for the first time, and the results are "Temporarily unreachable" (see screen pic). Any idea on why this is so, and should I just wait and try again later?
Reply
nathaniell Premium
If it was temporarily unreachable either you put in the wrong URL, or your site was down for a few seconds. I would try again in a bit.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
It could be you typed it in wrong or the server was down. It happens sometimes. Make sure when typing it in you do not use http://www.yourdomainname.
Reply
pamdemonium Premium
Thank you for your replies.

Any advice if I should "Submit to Index" after I Fetch as well as Fetch & Render? Or just once for each URL will do?

I only do a Fetch and then Submit to Index every time after I publish new content, which will get my content indexed into Google within a couple of hours.

I have one site using yoast as well, but implemented after All in One was in effect. I believe if you go into your dashboard and then down to SEO, then click on the "webmaster tools" tab, that is where your verification code goes. (3rd one down for Google)

There are only 10 results per page, so if you are truly ranked at 11 you are not on the first page. Besides, if your website content is new, Google will rarely rank you highly. If you did not search correctly Google will give you fasle data.

What is the keyword you searched for and where did you search for it?

Not sure why your results are different than mine, but here in the U.S. using Google Incognito Mode, you are on Page 1 Position 8.
Reply

Is this a good position?
What does it mean, in terms of potential traffic?
I was thinking of adding another Page or creating a blog post around some closely related keywords in order to lift my position on the page.
Would this work?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Adding more content to your website will always help but there is no guarantee of how quickly it will happen. Basically it will happen when Google determines you are ready.

The only thing to do is stop worrying about your rank and just keep creating good content. Make sure to get comments on your content by asking the community because comments are added content in the eyes of Google.

Eventually you will rise up but it will not happen unless your website has at least 20 good pages/posts of content. Google rewards sites with lots and lots of content.

Iosbourne Premium
Thanks you very much Robert.
This is my first site after 2 months of membership, so I am expecting to improve; specially so with the help you have given me!
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Just be patient in your rankings. Google may place you high up at first but will always lower your rank until you prove you deserve to be ranked highly and that only happens with time and a lot of content.

Don't expect good consistent results within 2 months, that is not logical. 6 months yes, but not 2 months, it's just too soon and Google is slow to rank.
Reply
Iosbourne Premium
When you have time, I'd be grateful if you could look at the site and let me know what you think.

Other than scrolling through the google search results pages based upon a keyword phrase I've been using in my website pages and posts, how can I find out what google search page my website is on?
Reply
Skighler Premium
The best way is to have Jaaxy but if you aren't able to afford the membership, SERPS.com is a tool I use when I can't afford jaaxy.

Raymond, I have just this very minute published new training on the very easy ways to accomplish this. Click this link for the WA Training.

Hi Robert!
Do you think that by adding the International Targeting, let's say USA, I will get more traffic from USA, or I will better indexed in USA? (because US is the main priority for me)
Or should I let the box empty?
Thanks!
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Which box are you referring to? Where are you seeing this box exactly?
Reply
doru Premium
In the webmaster, Search Traffic, International Targeting, Country
Reply
doru Premium
The question is: is good to target a specific country or not, thanks!
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Are you looking to target the U.S. or another specific country?
Reply
doru Premium
U.S mostly, but also U.K and Canada. This is my doubts, if I choose to target U.S, will I get ranked in other countries?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
If you target the U.S. you will only show in the U.S. and be ranked as well from there. But since you want to target the U.K. and Canada too, then do not target any specific country and leave that box un-checked.

Thank you Robert. I just used your GWT technique on my newest website page. How do you then followup with this task?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
You are welcome Raymond. Which task are you talking about? The Fetch as Google and Submit to Index?

If yes, once you submit your website page or post to the Google index you are done. That page or post will be indexed into Google within 24 hours.
Reply
EzekielBS Premium
Thank you Robert. Is there a way to verify that it has been indexed?

Robert I am so glad I followed you and found your training, I will definately be using GWT its a no brainer , I will start linking my posts and pages together and start a post cycle every few weeks do you suggest a new page on sites every few months or not? thanks john
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
The choice is up to you. Ideally you want to publish more posts than pages once you have your main pages published. I normally do a new page every couple of months and a new post once per week.
Reply
TanjaRita Premium
Is there anyway to undo a fetch? I just noticed that I copied and pasted the URL and forgot to take out my website name so it is in there twice and the status says redirected. Hopefully someone can help me out. Here is a screenshot. It looks like it must have been indexed (I published the post on Friday). Hopefully I didn't mess things up.
Reply
ChrisGooden Premium
Logically, fetch again?
Reply
TanjaRita Premium
I did do that as soon as I posted this question. However it is still showing the redirected link and when I click on it it goes to my site but with an error that the page cannot be found.
Reply
ChrisGooden Premium
There is a "Remove URL" so maybe remove the page and reindex it?
Reply
TanjaRita Premium
Where did you see "remove url". I have just made a GWT account so I don't know it very well. I did a Google search for my issue and all the answers I found said there is no way of removing a url. But if you know a way please let me know.

As you know that from your google images training, I was just cleaning up the mess with new free images and try to update my posts.
BAANG! Now I know how to get it indexed quicker.
Thanks man!
Hope that you can create another training about GWT errors such as structure data :)
Cheers,

Hi Robert,
Thanks for this excellent training post. I have been using Fetch as Google for quite awhile, and it really does make a huge difference in how fast your post are indexed. I've noticed my post show up in Google the moment I index them.
Thanks again for spreading the word about these great tools.
I also have a question? Is it ok to reindex a post in Fetch as Google after making an update to that particular post? Thank you.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
You are welcome Milton.

It is absolutely OK re-index a post after it has been updated. I do that all the time, especially if I get a lot of comments on it, because Google considers comment interaction as new fresh content. So yeah, re-indexing your content is not a problem.

You are so welcome Christa. There is much that needs to be said about GWT, but these two aspects are the ones I use the most and are the most helpful for SEO.

I will do another GWT training in the future to address some of the other aspects. There is just too much to cover in one training.
