A subscriber in Wordpress.
One of the great assets of Wordpress is that you can allow visitors to subscibe to your site and / or you can add users and assign them a specific role (like author, editor, administrator)
To allow your audience to register on your website you must allow this in the settings of your Wordpress site. Just make sure to assign the lowest role (subscriber). You can always change roles later, if needed.
To do so go to your wordpress dashboard > settings

To do so go to your Wordpress dashboard > users and add New
It looks like this:
better place a link to your login page, to invite people to register

Does that plugin actually tell you to go to your settings allowing anyone to sign into your WordPress Dashboard as a subscriber?
It is my understanding that we should avoid using that option. See screen print below...
The plugin I use on one site (when not using an autoresponder) is Email Subscribers & Newsletters by icegram and that plugin is a stand alone in that they do NOT require a user to go to your WordPress Dashboard > Settings
