When building anything, the foundation is the platform upon which the remainder of the project rests. If the foundation is faulty, the remainder of the project is subject to be destabilized when "put to the test."

The irony of building a strong foundation is that most people rarely inspect the foundation of things. If you have ever tried to buy a home, and used a realtor to do it, I bet they never showed you the foundation of the house. You usually are shown the more visible rooms.

And yet, if the foundation of the house was insecure, the remainder of the home could be jeopardized when the rain. or wind, or a flood came. Often the "invisible" things in life are more important than the visible.

Identifying the proper niche for your online business is the foundation for your business. A niche can be defined as a “situation in which a business’s products or services can succeed by being sold to a particular kind or group of people.”

Probably most people start a business thinking what they would like to do as a first step in the process.. But, choosing a niche really involves selecting the group of people that your business will be serving as a first step. In the world of internet marketing, the desire of what a person wants to do is modified by the selection of the niche of people they will be serving.

In this tutorial we will be teaching you how to select the best niche for your business. We will "dig deep" into the details of the process for doing this. Although it may seem like I am unnecessarily complicating things at times, the proper selection of your niche will set the foundation for your business's success in the weeks to come.

Ok, thankyou. This is helpful to allow me to get clearer on my gifts. I know that I am a talented artist, and also a natural counselor so listening is my strong point, and I also have a gift for helping others gain clarity in their own life directions. I also enjoy making incenses and perfumes from essential oils, and have training as a massage therapist. If I can somehow find a way to combine a couple of these things, then I think I'm on my way.

Thanks so very much Videre for your comments. I am 70 years old and my life was involved 20 years in the Air Force (accounting career) and 20 years with Internal Revenue Service (taxes) but within the last 6 years I have develped a strong interest in security. So you have helped me lean toward Personal self-Defense and also Home Defense. These are both are greatly needed in this day and time. Thanks again so much for your guidence.

Hi, your article was very well done. After much consideration, I think my strongest niche is, I like to try to help people with their investing needs and allow more people a choice and the freedom of financial independence.

Do you think that this is a saturated market?

Hi my name is Abdul,

Like your article on what you had to say about building a niche. My on problem is I have not found one yet! However, I think I am get close. I like to ask, do have to sell any products from Amazon , or do you just promote there products on you website to make money? I am new to this. I just joined Wealthy Affiliates today.

I need to do something I can monetize right away to get at least a little cash flow. Then, I can start thinking more long term and concentrate on a niche with better long term growth potential. Some of my strengths and "passions" are: I have good taste in art and design, I'm good at analyzing things, and I'm a talented artist. I might also be interested in selling survival goods, bird houses, or something having to do with helping the autism community. I'm currently also trying to promote a gold buying opportunity to help people affordably acquire large amounts of gold. I'm also passionate about education. I made a perfect score in Calculus 1 in college, and completed a16 week C++ computer programming class in only 1 week. I'm building a 3D printer and learning computer animation, so maybe I can do something with this, also.

Hi Videre, thanks for this article. I am new and having a hard time deciding which direction to go with my niche. I am not sure my passion or interest will actually help people or make money. So I am still working on it. I would love my niche to incorporate horses, saving money with horses or choosing the right horse. I have lots to share..

for example a niche could be rock music? i love pearljam and i love chess
Reply

Yes...but they may be a little too broad. To narrow down the niche you might try pearljam concerts or pearljam lyrics etc. As far as chess goes you might try introductory chess moves or classic chess moves or history of chess etc. Have fun...those are great niches.

Jeff

Yes Kat...I am only good at a few things so my decision was easy. For those that are multi-gifted choosing a niche can be more difficult. Your area of greatest interest is usually where you have a natural attraction. Choose what you will enjoy most and seem to have a natural interest in.

I am glad it helped syb936. On my website beakingofcontent.com what I have published there is really an anthology of posts that follow or track my progress in WA. Every time I had a challenge in my site build out I wrote a post about it. So if you refer to it you will see many topics that may be relevant to you as you build your business.

This was a breath of fresh air and made a whole lot of sense! Wish I had been able to read this when I started with WA!

Breaking it down into the 7 questions you ask, helps one to focus on what is really going to work and what isn't!

Thank you for taking the time to post this tutorial. I really appreciate your quality input!

Well done!

Still struggling a bit with choosing a niche. Sounds sad, but I don't have any hobbies as such, maybe I'm a workaholic. Great tutorial though, at least I now have some food for thought and am sure I will find something, even if it's just to get me started.

Did you make a list? What are you passionate about?
Reply

Thanks for the reply. I did make a list, a short one, but couldn't see anything that would fit a niche. I like walking, reading, watching soccer. I like the occasional bet on soccer as well. I was thinking of trying to develop the computer software angle (which is my trade). I then realised there was something I had a great interest in, but hadn't been involved in it for some months, genealogy. I have spent years on and off researching my family tree, so I think that's where I will head. It's something I could at least write about with confidence. Thanks again for the help and I'll keep you informed.

Great direction on building your business Jeff. Thanks. Question 7 is key, which I think a lot of people fail to grasp. A lot of us is blogging but are not asking for the sale.

I see a lot of blog just asking for opinion and some just giving pure strong advice. Monetizing your niche is key to having success online. Thanks for that tip Jeff. Just my two cents on this.
