This tutorial is showing you how to search and fix broken links on your website.

The first step, check your site on http://brokenlinkcheck.com/

and follow the instructions on the site.

N.b.WA automatically strip the www from your addres, so you fill it in without www!

This will take a while, you can make a cup of coffee now :)

Hi Loes

Thanks for the training.

Please can I ask what I should do about this broken link and where I would even find it?

http:// fonts.googleapis. com

I put the spaces in on purpose. It just goes to a 404.

Thanks so much

I searched the internet and found out that this is a common issue, many people are complaining about this.

They gave some solutions:
1. Do you use Mailchimp, it can be in their files

2. Second bug: It's displayed in CSS with double brackets ""http:// fonts.googleapis. com"", you need to delete one on both sides

3. It's caused by the old format of http, to prevent this, when you have located the link you can delete the http before the // like this
"// fonts.googleapis. com"

I would search in the theme’s functions.php or in the CSS stylesheet

Be sure you know what you are doing, entering the editor. If not, I suggest contacting site support first.

Oh thank you Loes,

I did install Mail Chimp at one point. But deleted the plugin. I will do as you say. Really appreciate the help.

Hi, Loes. I followed your instructions and have many 404 pages but I also have "bad host" they seem to be URL's that have nothing to do with my site. How do I get rid of these?
Reply
Loes Premium
404's and bad host are often abandoned sites in your comment area, or fake sites. You should go to comments first and check which websites people entered.

how do i remove links that are not from my website?
see a few from other sites, must be backlinks or something but they are not valid links any more.

still go through webmster tools and have them deleted?
Reply
Loes Premium
Are they perhaps added in your comment area?
Reply
Skydancer1 Premium
Looks like that is the case. Many are WA members who have updated or mistyped the weblink. Going to have to blow out some comments to fix it. Bummer :(
Reply
Loes Premium
You can just delete the websites, don't remove the comments!

A lot of websites claim to be mobile friendly, and in use, they are not, even when Google says they are.
I have 2 of those websites and added a plugin to make things work.
You can try that too

Thank you, I will check it out. I appreciate it.

Loes, it says it is mobile friendly but the drop-down tabs do not work They say what is supposed to be in there, but you cannot open them up.
Thank you so much for your help. I will keep searching for a remedy. :)

Sometimes it's the theme, sometimes it's your phone, try another phone of a friend and see if it works correct on that one
Reply

We did try it on several phones. I may change the theme and see what happens. We tried on iPhone and Android and it is the same on both kinds.
HMMMM my task for today. LOL

Good Explanation. Thanks a lot, I have found 15 broken links on my blog But I don't understand How to fix that.

I did not found X in any of the URL and about the 2nd pic I did not understand.

When I am clicking on SRC I got this error

Failed to open requested web page on your website

Please clarify.

Hi Loes,

You seem to be a real expert so I would appreciate if you could give me some help regarding the broken links. I have used the website that you mentioned above and it gave me 3 broken links, 2 of the sites name that are not mine. Do you know to fix this? I included the screen shot below: Thanks a lot for your help!

They are probably to find in your comment area. Go to your dashboard, comments, and look there for them, in the quick edit you can remove those

I came across this because I keep getting broken images (link) every other day. It makes me crazy and I dont want to delete the link and re-copy and re-paste. its a lot of work.. the question is why it keeps showing up with the broken link/image??
Reply
Loes Premium
I found out, that most links are in the comment area, websites which are added. but no longer in the air, and links added from external websites which are no longer in the process. Be sure, when you add a link, it will stay online
Reply
sunny66 Premium
I am not sure I understand. I am still getting a broken image of the links and I am getting really frustrated and got to the point of giving up. I really don't know what to do...I get the links from Amazon and I had to re-do the links over and over. All I did was copy and paste their links and put it on my website while being online. But always the next day, it gets broken.
Reply
Loes Premium
Hi Sunny, I don´t know anything about amazon affiliate links and why they are broken day after day, I don´t use amazon myself, can you ask this question to the community?
Reply

That's alright. I already asked the community and they said I need to fix the browsers so I fixed it and hopefully it works better in the next few days. However, thank you for your time.

Hi Loes, I just ran the broken link checker and came across something I can't figure out how to fix. I have included an image. When I click on the last three's URL, it is taking me to my site map page. Can you or anyone else instruct me on how to fix this?
Reply
Loes Premium
did you install Yoast?
Reply
SuzetteH Premium
No I didn't Loes, Should I?
Reply
Loes Premium
No, but I have seen this problem in combination with Yoast before, I guess it has something to do with the SEO all in one.

At first:
Have you seen the training of PJ?
It's about how to fill in the SEO All in one. Perhaps wise to fill all data in a correct way.

Second: I will search WA and the internet if there is some answer for this to find

I am not totally sure about this, but question: Have you deleted some categories or tags by any chance, with these names?

I am wondering if this is from a photo gallery plug-in I used on my site but removed it from the site but didn't deactivate the plug-in itself??? I am going to deactivate the plug-in and run the checker again.

I agree, we need a video as I'm a visual person too. Using this online broken link checker, I found out that I have 60 broken links which all points to same page id. But the url and src says a different thing so I'm confused. And I don't know how to fix them. Btw, this is my website: www.souperdiaries.com

Hi Loes, thanks for posting this. I'm trying to fix errors in my webmaster tools because there are apparently 10 pages with broken links, and the links are with keywords I didn't even choose, so I'm pretty confused on how to fix this issue. I tried reading this but it's pretty foreign to me. Do you have a follow along video I can watch somewhere instead? I'm a very visual person.
Reply
Loes Premium
No I don't. you can at first check all the links provided in your comment area, there are often the most broken links
Reply
VonnieOh Premium
Hi Loes, when checking for broken links, do you choose
"Report distinct broken links only" or
"Report all occurrences of each dead link (may be slower)"?
Reply
Loes Premium
If you want a mention of all, you choose for report all, when you distinct some will not come out

Hi Loes, if I changed the URL and need to fix it, do I just revert the permalink back to the original title? What if I prefer the newer permalink? Is there a way to keep the new permalink?
Reply
Loes Premium
Oeh, that's a tough question, I would play on safe, revert it back, and fetch it again with Google fetch, and remove the wrong link also in Google webmaster tools
Reply
VonnieOh Premium
I would gladly copy, paste and re-create a new post with the correct permalink but I have comments on it.
Reply
Loes Premium
You don't have to recreate it, just change it, then fetch it, and remove the old permalink on google webmaster tools

starting out a few months ago I purchased my domain from godaddy and at the same got the SEO visability product. I used it for the first time and it was telling me I have 11 broken links,(I did not fix anything) then I found your advise here and I ran it through brokenlinkcheck and it said I had zero broken links. So my question is should I even be doing anything with the godaddy seo? Was it a newbie error in purchasing this product? Thanks for your help
Reply
Loes Premium
Most of the time the broken links are in your comment area, I should go through that, WA-ers who have commented, left their websites and now stopped. Then those are all 404's
Reply

Is there anything else I need to do with these. I have been having a ton of problems with facebook lately and I am about ready to give on that social media all together anyway.

On my Wordpress sites, I use the Broken Link Checker Plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/broken-link-checker/. Emails you if it finds a broken link.
I also combine this with the Redirect Plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/redirect/ to capture and redirect 404 pages. Sometimes needed if you change a page slug and the webcrawlers are still looking for the old one.

Reply
Loes Premium
Can you be more specific, I do not understand your question
Reply
PhyllisE1 Premium
On the page where they show you the list of your broken links, when I clicked on the URL (it's blue and underlined), it gives me a page of codes. Is that, or part of it, what I am supposed to copy and paste?
Reply
Loes Premium
No, you do not have to paste any code. The code tells you where the problem lies. The code on the course on page 2 tells me that the problem is the gravatar on a comment. So I removed the emailaddress from the comment and with that the gravatar.
You are clicking on SRC, that's not neccesairy, unles you can't find the problem, when you click on "url" the page sends you directly to the page on your website where the broken link is.

Hope you understand my reply, if not, please ask again:)
