Are you willing to add Google Analytics to your WordPress site even without installing a plugin at all? I’m pleased to inform you that you can accomplish that with ease so far you can follow this guide sheepishly.

When it comes to getting real-time stats, detailed insights regarding your visitors, Google Analytics is all you need to add. It also helps in tracking your website traffic every day.

Now, follow me for the simple guide on how you can add Google Analytics code to your WordPress site without installing a plugin.

This tutorial has been updated. You can check it out below:

How to Add Analytics to Your Site
Install the Analytics Tracking Code on Your Website

Does it affect Your Site Speed to Add Google Analytics with a Plugin?

Many people believe that the less plugins they installed on their sites, the better their site speed will be, whereas, this is usually far from the reality.

It’s real that the wrongly-coded plugins could bring about bloat to your site and, thus, impact your site speed adversely. The right step to take to ensure that you install plugins safely on your site is to leverage the Markup Validation Service.

Emphatically, the performance of your site speed has no correlation with the number of plugins installed except for the wrongly-coded plugins installed only. Of all the WordPress plugins that have well been evaluated and speed-optimized, MonsterInsights is the most leveraged ever. It doesn’t impact your site speed negatively.

Before I go into details, I would like to enumerate the reasons adding Google Analytics code to your WordPress website without installing a plugin may not be the right option for your website.

  • Possibility to lose your tracking code: Whenever you have a cause to change themes, you may possibly not remember to re-add your Google Analytics code to the newly chosen theme. For the time being when Google Analytics code has not yet been re-added, you won’t be able to track your visitors, whereas, if you had installed a plugin initially, you wouldn’t have missed out on any of such important data.
  • Lack of flexibility: Installing a plugin on your WordPress site is more flexible than adding Google Analytics code without a plugin. The best plugin for Google Analytics I ever knew and recommended is MonsterInsights which lets you set up Google Analytics in a few clicks.
  • Possibility to miss powerful Analytic features: Without installing a Google Analytics plugin on your WordPress site, it would be hard to set up Analytics features like file download tracking, custom dimensions, events tracking, and many more on your website.

the only downside of adding the code in the header.php is that it has to be re-added once there is a theme update.

You're very correct, Karax, that adding Analytics code to the header.php file would surely warrant redoing the same whenever there's a cause to switch between themes. And that was why I recommended in my training tutorial that you can simply add your Google Analytics tracking ID to your site without having to insert any HTML code at all. Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you for the insightful post! Is it worth installing the free version of MonsterInsights? I read in the plugin reviews that the free version is worthless. Is it the case or it works fine?

Thanks for asking, Karax! Not at all, you don't need to install the MonsterInsights plugin on your site. Just the adding of the Analytics tracking code will do a great job for you. Thanks for visiting!

Israel, your blog came at such a right time for me. I understand the importance of 'links' being a launching pad to external sites are looked down upon by Google. I knew what I needed to do, to make visitors 'roam' on my site, but this blog you create my brother is the details I need to know. Thank you!

As I have always said and believe, Israel, you are sooo welcomed in my journey to creating an awesome website. In fact you play a BIG PART to my success, my dear friend.

Thanks for your lovely comment, Terand! Kudos for the reading and for your passion! Without adding Google Analytics code to your website, you won't be able to track your visitors. However, you may decide not to add tracking code but the tracking ID to your WordPress site rather. Thanks for your lovely visit!
