The Google boys: Larry Page and Sergey Brin
We must go back again to Stanford University in California where two students developed a search algorithm that proved to deliver better results than those from Yahoo! and Excite. We’re talking of Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
Larry Page was born in March 2, 1973 in East Lansing, Michigan. Born to Carl Victor Page, Sr. and Gloria. His mom was Jewish and worked as an instructor in computer programing at Michigan State University were she meet Larry’s dad. He was a computer science professor at Michigan State University. He also earned a PhD in computer science from this same University. A BBC reporter once wrote of him as “pioneer in computer science and artificial intelligence.”
Little Larry was an avid reader. And growing up he immersed himself in this computer, science and technology environment that surrounded him at home. His parents were also very attentive and fostered creativity and invention.
As a kid, Larry also played saxophone and studied music composition. He has stated that his musical education stimulated his obsession with speed in computing.
On the other hand, Sergey Brin’s story is a bit different. Born in August 21, 1973 in Moscow to Russian Jewish parents, Yevgenia and Mikhail Brin. Both graduates of Moscow State University.
In 1977, the Brin family, due to anti-Semitism, made up their mind to leave the Soviet Union. And in September 1978 formerly applied for their exit visa. As a result, after this request, the father was fired, and the mother had to leave her job. While they waited during the next 8 months, not having any steady income, they took up temporally jobs. But their main fear was that their application would probably be denied, as it often occurred with soviet Jews. But in May 1979, they received their official exit visa and were permitted to leave the country.
In the United States, Sergey’s father worked as a mathematics professor at the University of Maryland and his mother as a researcher in NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
WOW - you always do the most interesting trainings! ;-)
Thank you for the history about Google. I remember those early years - I didn't like Google at all and never used them. I preferred http://www.Mamma.com or http://www.AllTheWeb.com. Mamma's slogan was "The Mother of all search engines", but today they are only about coupons, it looks like. It also looks like AllTheWeb has been taken over by Yahoo.
I remember that I got a free sewing pattern from http://TuCows.com, which was a winner. But today, TuCows is a very different website than what it used to be.
And I loved your comics too - you are very creative! Although I sincerely hope you are wrong with your prediction to which extent Google will invade our privacy!
Much enjoyed - thank you, Henry!
