The WordPress Stage

  • Recheck your Title
  • Recheck your Permalink. Remove year from Permalink, though it may be in the title. Shorten Permalink, if it is too long (not more than 75 characters)
  • Check complete article with Grammarly (For some reason, it doesn't work in SiteContent) or any other grammar checker.
  • Check 'Status' (It should be Published)
  • Check 'Visibility' (It should be Public)
  • Add 'Categories'
  • Add 'Tags'
  • Add a 'Featured Image' with 'Alt text' and 'Title'
  • Check all images in the article for 'Alt text' and 'Title'. Enable'open in separate window' if it has an affiliate link.
  • Links
    • Link to some Authority site(s)
    • Recheck that you have some links to your 'Landing Page' or (WA) 'Sign-in page'
    • Ensure that you have some 'Backlinks' to your own website. It's called Internal Linking.
    • Ensure that prominent pics have links too.
    • Add incoming and outgoing backlinks, if possible
  • Write a short Meta Description
    • Include Focus keyword in meta-description.
    • Make the meta description interesting

What is to be done in the next stage?

Hi Aparna,

That's very helpful - it's so easy to forget all the steps, but with a checklist like this it makes it a lot easier.

There's just one thing I would add - view the article on your phone.
It's vital that it looks good on mobile devices.

Thank you, and enjoy your day!

Hi, Aparna

Great list!

I have a question about your referral to backlinks. Aren't links made by you to other posts or pages on your site called internal links? Backlinks are typically links from someone else's site back to you, not made by you. If you link a post from one of your websites to another post on a second website that you own, is that technically still an internal link, or is it a backlink? I think it still might be an internal link.

Thanks,
Frank

Hi Frank,
Great question.

What the hell are backlinks anyway?

Backlinks (also known as “inbound links”, “incoming links” or “one way links”) are links from one website to a page on another website. (Authority: Backlinko.com)

Backlinks are links from a page on one website to another. If someone links to your site, then you have a backlink from them. If you link to another website, then they have a backlink from you.

Google and other major search engines consider backlinks “votes” for a specific page. Pages with a high number of backlinks tend to have high organic search engine rankings.

Google has confirmed that backlinks remain one of their three most important search engine ranking factors:
https://searchengineland.com/now-know-googles-top-three-search-ranking-factors-245882

Internal Links are hyperlinks that point at (target) the same domain as the domain that the link exists on (source). In layman's terms, an internal link is one that points to another page on the same website.

So the answer to your question is:
1. We must have internal links to some other articles on our website.
2. We must provide backlinks to some Authority sites.
3. We must try and get someone to link their article to yours through a backlink to your website. The more authoritative that website, the better, obviously.

Boy, I sure can write :)

Would anyone like to pitch in too? Most welcome ...

Regards,
Aparna

Good stuff. The other thing I do automatically is go to Google Search Console and immediately get them looking for my post. My site is about 8 months old. I discovered about 2 months ago that roughly 40% of my published article had not been indexed by Google even though it had been several weeks. So as soon as I publish my latest post, I just copy and paste the link into Google Search Console so they can start looking for it right away. That seems to speed things up a bit. Great work!

Yes Karl, that's what I have suggested too. We must submit our article's URL for indexing by Google, soon after we finish writing and publishing it.

Aparna, first and most important, CONGRATULATIONS! for taking this big step!!
I am VERY proud of you. 🙂

As good as our training is at WA, the devil is in the details and this is an area that required some additional detail.

You have mentioned a few things that I take for granted, e.g. linking pictures.
I also appreciate that you have included a .ppt which I have saved and will print and place on my action board.

I look forward to following the series.
Well done!
